He was drafted by a team full of talented 2 guards/wing players and then got shot. I'm not convinced he would have stuck in the NBA as a star, or even get consistent playing time but circumstances do matter. He probably would have had to become a game manager/defensive stopper guard, maybe in a team running a triangle or princeton-style offense but unfortunately that didn't happen. Also I feel like his development may have actually been hurt by playing on D-league and Australian teams that needed him to be a star scorer, which wouldn't have been his role in the NBA.I'll settle for having him as one of the better college players and shameless promoters of NC State we have ever had. Few players have been so beloved by Wolfpack Nation and fully reciprocated it as Julius.
12/15/2010 8:38:34 AM
^ exactly.Hodge could've gone anywhere else and made an impact from the bench. Instead he went to a team & coach that collected guards like kid collect baseball cards, so he got stuck playing behind a number of players and was never even going to get a look.As hard as he worked here, you don't think he was going to work that hard in the NBA? We're not talking about TA McClendon, here.

You have to be 7 feet tall, or be able to dunk from the FT line, or be able to hit a consistent jumper. The jumper really kills him because it's something he theoretically can fix. By not fixing it, he cost himself an NBA career. That's unfortunate.
12/15/2010 9:29:07 AM
Point is his question was stupid, unless he is counting Lane Kiffin as still being at Tennessee...
12/15/2010 9:42:19 AM
sure it had nothing to do with Pearl having to get suspended for the first half of the conference games

If Steve Blake could make a career in the NBA I have every reason to believe that Julius could have done the same under different circumstances.
12/15/2010 9:56:57 AM
^ I guess you didn't like Jules fucking your girl did you?
12/15/2010 9:57:15 AM
I don't even understand why people care what he did, didn't do, or might have done in the NBA. He was the fucking man at NCSU, and that's all that matters to me. Fuck the NBA.
12/15/2010 10:01:39 AM
uh oh, i think you just sent up the TreeTwista10symbolsilhouette of rasheed wallace on the clouds
12/15/2010 10:04:55 AM
Don't worry, Bobby will change his tone when these cats start to dominate the league in a few years
12/15/2010 10:07:42 AM
you know the economy is in the shitter when the NBA starts outsourcing.
12/15/2010 10:08:58 AM
12/15/2010 10:12:11 AM
Actually I agree with you 100% I never saw him doing much but being a reserve in the NBA and when he was drafted by the nuggets (who really needed someone capable of hitting an outside shot at that point) the writing was on the wall. Nice to see I riled you up so much though
12/15/2010 10:24:16 AM
Its tough to go from being a star in college to a role player in the league. Some can handle it (Battier, Redick, Big Baby Davis) and some can't (Hodge, McCants, Morrison). Just because Player A is better than Player B in college doesn't mean he's going to be a better pro.
12/15/2010 10:29:46 AM
apparently he's improved his shot in recent years, maybe ill check out some Aussie youtube vids lol

I don't understand why Blake's numbers at Maryland convinced you that he would succeed at the next level. Hodge had similar (probably better) numbers, the positions they played accounting for the differences. Hodge was a better shooter in college, too and obviously received more individual awards than Blake.

^and Hodge may have done the same had he gotten a similar circumstance, ie drafted to a more appropriate team for him.But let's be real here, STEVE BLAKE.
12/15/2010 11:28:20 AM
is someone defending steve blake?
12/15/2010 11:29:26 AM
I'm defending NBA Steve Blake. Fuck college Steve Blake...I hated that guy. But I'm mature enough to respect a player once he's left a college rival. You guys know that Hodge could have been traded or picked up by another team that could have used his "skills"??Blake has played for 6 different teams. Somebody thought they could use his skill set.
12/15/2010 11:36:02 AM
Interesting that no one's mentioned that Hodge and Blake were traded for one another.
12/15/2010 11:39:23 AM
Blake has carved out a nice career for himself. He was a douche in college, but to everyone but us, so was Hodge. Blake always had good size for his position, shot well from the outside and knew how to distribute. He is remarkably efficient on a per minute basis, which is why he got his deal. Situation or luck has very little to do with it..
12/15/2010 12:48:59 PM
I agree with jbrick83. I never saw Hodge doing much in the NBA either. Hodge was good at a lot of things, but not great at anything. Blake was a great passer and had good size which got him in the league and he was able to stick. I wish Hodge would have had more of a chance, but oh well. I still love the guy.
