you talkin about intro? it's a sampler class- probably throw in citizen kane, something film noir, easy rider, jaws, american beauty, random foreign films, etc (it varies). you won't like every film but if you pay attention and participate in the post-viewing discussions, it can be pretty fun.[Edited on December 6, 2010 at 8:35 AM. intro to film is a lot of fun and you watch a lot of good movies from a wide variety of genres and time periods. One of my favorite classes I took in college.
12/6/2010 10:26:07 AM
yeah eng 282- intro to film w/ mench. not taking it as a blow off course but its better than taking any religion course for my gen ed requirement.now what i want to know are the papers hard to write?
12/6/2010 10:57:03 AM
the papers aren't any harder to write than any normal English paper. If you don't have a problem identifying and analyzing themes, motifs, cultural references etc. when reading a book and writing a paper for it you won't have a problem here. Same idea except now you have to consider framing of the shots, colors, etc. on film. Basically you just add another layer to dissecting a story, the way it is told, and what it is telling you beyond the obvious surface plot/storyline.[Edited on December 6, 2010 at 11:08 AM. I took ENG 282 with Wallis. Such an awesome class. We watched a lot of westerns, some short films, a couple newer films, a buster keaton film. The great thing is that you'll really expand your horizons. Are the papers hard to write? I enjoyed them. I watched Near Dark like 5 times for the final paper. BEST FEMINIST COWBOY VAMPIRE FILM EVER.

well thanks for the comnments but how time consuming is the class? i mean i'm not a film major or anything, i rather not watch a movie a bunch of times to write a paper
12/6/2010 6:19:35 PM
I watched a movie 5 times because I really wanted to "get" it. I'm certainly no film major. And this was only for the final project, which you needed to analyze in depth and on your own. Everything else was viewed in class. Also, I think the class was 4 hours once a week. Seems hard, but when you're watching movies [Edited on December 6, 2010 at 6:38 PM. Reason : d]

i wasn't saying its hard, i already saw the grade distribution but there is a difference between time consuming or not, i'd rather not spend that much time to get an A even if its easy b/c there are harder classes i need to spend more time on, sorry but I can't afford to spend that much time on the class, and i didn't know you have to read?

^^ Basically. I attempted to be helpful in this thread, but just like the other threads he posts in Study Hall it quickly turned into "I don't want to do any work, I just want an easy A." At that point people tell him he is either lazy, stupid, or a troll. Then gz390 gets offended, starts underlining every other word in his posts, and the thread is permanently derailed [Edited on December 7, 2010 at 12:25 PM. Reason : .]

i like how he eased into it this time...what movies? are they good? papers?!?! how long? watch a movie in my free time?!?! and read?!?!
12/7/2010 12:51:33 PM
hahaha yea
12/7/2010 12:53:33 PM
sorry but when i see the words intro and film i do no expect much time investment, etc. nor reading because its supposed to be about films not books
12/7/2010 4:17:29 PM
Then don't take the fucking class and move on.

i managed to get into Sci-Fi Film (English 492) so i'm taking it with D Orgeron, anyone had him before, and know how his class compares to the Intro to Film classes. the grade distribution looks good though. also i know intro to film is not a prerequisite but since i hadn't taken it would it make the class harder?[Edited on January 10, 2011 at 10:32 PM. Orgeron is the shit. I had him for intro to film. He's a genius, pretty funny, and very lenient.
1/11/2011 7:02:25 PM
yea i had the class today and the class is defintely worth keeping on my schedule, good thing i dropped out of that intro to film, also requirements look easier than intro to film
1/11/2011 7:13:42 PM
It's not going to be "easier." Your subject matter is now just more focused.
1/11/2011 8:26:44 PM
well to me focused in this situation is what makes it better , now i can write on movies i actually enjoy b/c sci-fi to me is more entertaining than drama, adventure, etc. and most of it has action. on the other hand intro to film just shows a bunch of random films, which i heard there are a quite a few boring ones, and too many varieties will just make things more difficult and i will probably not enjoy most of the movies so ultimately it will make it harder to write the papers[Edited on January 11, 2011 at 9:05 PM. "boring" in film is relativeand usually is also influenced by experience, subject matter knowledge, or preconceived notions of what film is supposed to beit comes as no surprise to me that students in an intro-level class wouldn't understand what they were being showni am bad at mathbut there's no need for me to bad mouth the math

I'm in it right now. We're watching La Jette, The Searchers, Modern Times, Citizen Kane, Pleasantville, Don't Look Now, Singing in the Rain, The Hunger, Bladerunner, Do the Right Thing and the Piano. Doesn't seem too time consuming. We have a few online quizzes with no limit on submissions, one paper, a midterm, final, and sequence analysis.
1/14/2011 9:30:54 PM
I took it with Orgeron 7 years ago. It wasn't that bad. We watched Citizen Kane, On the Waterfront, Rebel without a Cause, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, something about trains, and a few other movies I can't remember..The tests were kinda tricky at times because you really had to pay attention to the details and things he gave in class. Other than that, a relaxing course that didn't involve too much thought.[Edited on January 15, 2011 at 12:49 PM. Reason : ya]

the class is cool and the movies are interesting, also it is very easy to identify themes in science fiction movies. however there is someone in the back every time there is a showing sleeping and snoring loudly. the teacher does not even care. why do people come to class if they are just going to sleep?also what are D Orgeron's quizzes are like?
1/26/2011 6:35:24 PM
the quizzes really depend on your skill set. would you say your skill set is strong to quite strong?]
