Someone approached my dad today saying he could manage his business's facebook/twitter/other social media sites for $500 dollars a month. I quickly told him, no, thats ridiculous and dont do that, I could do it for free. My question is has anyone else heard of this "scam" for older business owners who want to compete in the social media market. I actually thought this was a pretty good idea, i mean after everything is set up its maybe what, 30 min of work a month? thats getting paid $1000 dollars an hour. Maybe i should check this out.

why would it be a scam. everyone uses facebook, so you know people will be exposed to it. lots of people used myspace as a pseudo website for advertising.

you might be surprised at how retarded some people are at social networking. i feel like some places that have FB actually HURT themselves because of poor social networking skills. i know...i didn't think it was possible for people to utilize FB and stuff in such a way that had a negative impact on their business, but i have seen some really awful stuff and then people can't figure out why facebook (and other social networking tools) aren't boosting their business.*shrug*there are a lot of places now that have social media managers..i've seen several job listings for them!

It depends on what he means by "manage." If he's actually developing a strategy to leverage social media to enhance the business's brand and other buzzwordy strategems, then it could take substantial time to manage. But if he means he would create profiles and click Accept on friend requests every few weeks, yeah... worthless. I guess it depends on how big your dad's business is and whether it would actually be beneficial to have a presence in social media.

well he is a veterinarian, so its not like he will be offering too many "discounts" and he kinda doesn't want it to be an advertisement, he doesn't believe in doctors advertising, but he realizes that people moving to the area might look at his business through these sites but i doubt we will be going after an "aggressive marketing strategy"

I've got a friend down here in Charleston who has his own "Marketing" Group. Basically he "manages" the facebook pages for about 20 or 30 restaurants. He makes well over 6 figures. As much as I talk shit to him about it, he actually does a really great job with their pages.

^4x & ^6x; If its done as a real business enterprise it would be difficult to do on the side imho (growth plans, action plans, reporting, budgeting, skill set development & improvement, etc.)

it would also involve html coding to make the pages look better than just a plain old facebook page....
