Call this the offseason of Gus Malzahn
11/29/2010 3:42:05 PM
http://www.miamiherald.com/2010/11/30/1949312/other-coaching-options-emerging.htmlNames being thrown around in Miami: Jon Gruden, Dan Mullen (Mississippi State), Jim Leavitt, Gary Patterson (TCU), Mark Richt (UGA), Chris Petersen (Boise State), Brent Venables (Oklahoma def coordinator), Randy Edsall (UConn)chris petersen may be ready to move on. he gets $1.6 mil/yr now
11/30/2010 1:08:52 PM
You have to think Patterson stays, with his team moving to the Big East.Peterson, however, got fucked. He joins the MWC, and the best three teams (Utah, BYU and TCU) all leave. He may decide enough is enough and make the jump.
11/30/2010 2:08:27 PM
is miami a big enough program for him though? this guy's going to have his pick of any vacant position for the next three years, maybe he's waiting on a michigan or a notre dame.[Edited on November 30, 2010 at 2:27 PM. Reason : miami has been very good historically, but their following is mediocre at best.]
11/30/2010 2:27:12 PM
Notre Dame isn't coming open anytime soon IMO and Michigan is Harbaugh's if he wants it
11/30/2010 2:35:40 PM
i was very clearly using those two schools as examples of the types of positions he may be pining for.i cannot emphasize enough how clear i feel that i made this.
11/30/2010 2:39:56 PM
lol at Butch not even being in the top 3 in ACC COY
11/30/2010 2:40:16 PM
He can always move from Miami to whoever else if he wants. There is no loyalty in college football.Remember a few years ago when Greg Shciano was practically being handed the Miami job, but decided to stick with Rutgers. Now he's 4-7 and his star has faded. Always make the move to a better program when it comes along, because that opportunity may not be there next year.
11/30/2010 2:41:54 PM
that's true, although greg schiano had one good year. peterson has five.
11/30/2010 2:52:42 PM
you can go ahead and put michigan's position open regardless of how richrod does in the bowl game
11/30/2010 3:32:51 PM
for real? people i've met from UM say that the general feeling is that as disappointed as they are w/ rich rod, they're even less excited about having a new staff again.that's a small sample though, and probably people not even insightful enough as whatever free UM forum is popular.
11/30/2010 4:42:29 PM
Miami fans are confident that they have snatched up Gruden. AD is in Tampa negotiating contract with him right now. Not sure if this is Calapari to NCSU type stuff, or credible, but the folks on the canes message boards are calling it a done deal.
11/30/2010 10:41:19 PM
Why wouldn't Gruden just hold out for whatever NFL team gives him an offer this offseason?
11/30/2010 10:46:44 PM
^Cowboys?

I've got to say it would be pretty funny seeing Michigan go through 3 years of the pains of getting spread offense talent in place to spend another 3 or 4 going back to a pro-style system. The real problem is obviously defense at this point, even if Harbaugh is a very good coach.
12/1/2010 7:02:19 AM
wonder how much of a raise butch davis is going to milk. he's got the whole institution coddling his phallus.

Awesome if true regarding Meyer. I've hate that son of a bitch and UF too. If he flees while things are down at UF, it further shows his true character.

well last year it was health problems with Meyer. who knows how his health is right now. yeah, it's easy to look at their struggles this year and make the association, but who the hell know

^that is hilarious, especially the look on meyer's facemaybe it's just me, but does anyone else get the feeling that we're going to get an update from espn sometime in the near future that meyer is suffering from some sort of disease or something.. and then like 5-7 days get another update that he's dead? i hope not, but there has to be something more to this other than wanting to watch his kids play sports.
12/9/2010 4:07:44 AM
What was it that caused him to almost-quit last year? I thought he had some kind of heart condition...EDIT: Ah, he had chest pains during the SEC Championship but denied reports of heart issues.http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/12/26/urban-meyer-resigns-healt_n_404067.html[Edited on December 9, 2010 at 5:25 AM. He is gonna chill for 5 years or so and watch his kids play sports so he doesn't miss out. Maybe do a little commentary here and there. Right around the time they finish college, the Notre Dame job he publicly lusted over will be vacant again.
12/9/2010 1:18:01 PM
I, too, have considered quoting my job to watch his daughter play sports. She's a hottie

Question: which college football head coaching job(s), if any, would you put above Florida?Potentially Texas, but that might be it. USC might have arguably been better before NCAA probation.Other schools I'd say are close but just behind Florida would be Alabama, Miami, LSU, Oklahoma, Michigan, Ohio State, Notre Dame, maybe FSU.Next level is probably the Georgia, Auburn, Oregon, Nebraska, Clemson, VA Tech level of schools.Supposedly Miami is going after Pelini.[Edited on December 10, 2010 at 3:35 PM. Reason : .]
12/10/2010 3:34:42 PM
There's at least a dozen schools I'd put above Florida. Its a great job and one where you're put in a position to succeed, but its still a relative neophyte compared to some of the more storied programs in the country. You win two titles at Florida, and you're considered one of the best coaches in the game. You win two titles at Michigan, Ohio State, Notre Dame, or Alabama, and people are naming their kids after you. I still contend that Notre Dame Football Coach is the most prestigious job in all of American sports, right ahead of the Yankees and Cowboys.
12/10/2010 3:45:34 PM
^ exactlyFlorida has only been good for about 20 years... and REALLY good for about 15, people forget that.In college, I would have Bama, Notre Dame, and USC above a large group that includes Florida, Oklahoma, Texas, Georgia, Tennessee, Penn State, Michigan, Ohio State etc.
12/10/2010 3:49:55 PM
Miami is not a good jobAt least not good enough to be listed with the rest of those schoolsAnd the history of VT football begins and ends with Beamer. Who knows if it's the kind of program that can survive without him.[Edited on December 10, 2010 at 3:56 PM. Reason : ]
12/10/2010 3:54:39 PM
As clarification, I'm referring to best job TODAY. Clearly it is not as storied as a number of other programs, but I'm referring more to the best chance to walk in and be successful. That really has more to do with TV/media exposure, resources, natural recruiting advantages, and alumni/fan base than what has been the best program over time. I'd add Penn State to my third list. The recruiting advantages and cache of Miami make up for some deficiencies in other areas. The SEC is at a big advantage in national exposure right now, and of all the factors the ability to recruit talent is arguably the most important.
12/10/2010 4:17:34 PM
Notre Dame isn't as plum a job as it once was due to their high academic standards. If their BOD ever loosens that up a bit, ND will be back to a perennial top 5 team again. Until that happens, I would put Alabama, Ohio State, Michigan, Texas and Oklahoma as the top 5 programs out there right now due to their stability, tradition, and facilities. Miami, USC, and VT have shit for facilities like weight rooms, training facilities etc. Also, Miami's stadium and fanbase is also pretty shitty. A couple of fast rising programs out there are Oklahoma State and Oregon. Oregon, especially, could become the next dominant national power to to their uber close ties to Nike and the coach they currently have paired with USC's recent troubles.[Edited on December 10, 2010 at 4:22 PM. Reason : ]
12/10/2010 4:19:35 PM
Oregon is clearly on the rise and prime example of how big an impact huge levels of resources can have (Phil Knight). Oklahoma State is the same way (T Boone Pickens), although they have yet to win at the next level.
