hunting or fishing or just out enjoying nature hav you ever noticed someone taking out of season, or otherwise taking something that is clearly mandated not to be harvesteddo you approach them? what is the procedure for reporting. what i mean is at somepoint it is useless and most likely the offender wont be caught but do you do it anyway just to raise awareness that someone is illegally harvesting in a given public land?i ask because i see things. a guy with two buckets full of bream is most likely over the 20 bream creel limit

You can report violations at 1-800-662-7137 or 919-707-0040 in Raleigh.I don't have any experience with poaching, but I have lots of experience with trespassers hunting on private land without permission. We've handled them both ways: approaching them and warning them off or calling the authorities (especially when they're repeat offenders).

where are you seeing that the limit is only 20. This says there is no limit unless you are on specified waters...http://www.ncwildlife.org/Regs/2010_11/2010-11_Inland_Fishing.pdf

I hunt, kill, cook, feed and compost poachers to nourish my animals and gardens. Then I grind the bones into flour to make bread, which I feed to wild birds and squirrels.[/said too much]

This year I've definitely seen a lot of spanish folk fish from the bank from Lake Johnson...It really bugs me cause you are supposed to fish from the peer and not the bank at lake Johnson...and the spanish folk i've seen fish from the peer at Lake Johnson certainly catch over the limit then. I hate how they let it go, cause I feel it encourages other spanish folks to just go to the bank and overfish the area...

One morning when I was bowhunting I had gotten to my blind around 4am and was waiting for the sun to come up when I saw a spotlight sweep over the field. Sure enough, they saw a buck and shot it. Then they went down to it, cut off its antlers and left. I had seen several other deer left like this in the area so I went to the WRC on Centennial Campus and talked to the people there. They ended up setting up a decoy out in the field and eventually caught the assholes.

Way back in the days when I was hunting in a club up in Roanoke Rapids/Weldon area, there were some guys that would hunt from a boat in the river. They'd run upstream, drift down, and spotlight the banks. You'd hear shots way after dark and pre-dawn and whatnot. We called the wildlife officers and reported it.They came and set up a robotic decoy buck and caught em. Dudes were on the river and spotlighted it and shot it like six times before they figured it out and tried to run. They took their guns, boats, trucks, trailers and all that shit.To hear the wildlife officers retell the story was lollers, just from their decoy getting shot so many times, and they'd keep twitching the tail and turning the head, and "blam!" over and over.
10/21/2010 9:39:53 AM
^^ That's fucked up
10/21/2010 9:49:10 AM
How's that fucked up?BTW, I have a friend who once came up on one of those decoys. He likes to spotlight (not poaching) for fun and came up on a pretty nice buck. The buck didnt run. He thought it was odd so he got out of his truck and started walking towards it.He heard a handheld radio key up then realized it was a setup. He turned around and an officer was standing at his truck. The had a few laughs and he went on his way.
10/21/2010 10:21:41 AM
It's fucked up that people would shoot the deer and leave it to rot rather than using its meat.
10/21/2010 10:32:12 AM
^ that and the fact that there is such a large number of "hunters" that are such pussies that they can't hunt in a sporting way in the first placei realize not ALL hunters are like that, and there are different ways to hunt, but it never ceases to amaze me how many people consider themselves "hunters" when it's obvious that their skills are limited to shining a light and pulling a trigger
10/21/2010 10:53:38 AM

I hear shots all the time after dusk walking out of the woods hunting. People hunting over fields with the high powered scopes that pick up a lot of light on a full moon night will drop bucks in a heart beat.[Edited on October 21, 2010 at 12:43 PM. Reason : s]

^^ Those laws are particularly shitty for people who own livestock. The lights are still illegal, even if you are checking on a cow that is very near to birthing, etc.
10/21/2010 1:26:12 PM
There are nuisance permits that allow you to take game if they are disturbing your livestock/crops/etc
10/21/2010 1:32:38 PM
arent those for your own private land not public lands or other's private property
10/21/2010 1:35:55 PM
That is on any land regardless of ownership.http://www.ncwildlife.org/regs/2010_11/2010-11_Hunting.pdf
10/21/2010 1:38:50 PM
well yea that makes sense given deer populations when they allow to take out of season or destroying beaveri wasnt thinking on that vein
10/21/2010 1:40:23 PM
you don't need a permit to take most animals for depredation

man of the probably 300 times I have sat on a deerstand:I have seen a deer maybe 30 timessaw a deer worth size of shooting maybe 10 timesand took shots probably 9 timesand have harvested maybe 3the whole point of deer hunting is to freeze your ass off early in the morning/ late in the afternoon.Once at my hunt club growing up in Enfield NC we were out as usual, and heard a shot after I got off my stand and walking back to the fields ( I was wwwwwaaaay in the woods) I met up with my dad and continued on. We were approached by a wildlife officer, who thought we were shooting after dark. Well as it turns out we hear ANOHTER shot now, and without a flashlight there is no way you can see more than 6 feet infront of you.Well needless to say the game warden was all 'take care guys thanks and be safe' and scooted on out of there. Now if we had heard the shooting w/o the officer my dad would have called and told them approx time and location relative to ours. This was more than say 14 years ago, so cell phones were not as available as they are now. Now if I were to hear it, I actually do have an 800 number on speed dial (also in case I get in a sticky situation)But would I approach such people? Heeeeeeeeeelll no. Why? They have guns, are breaking the law,and would probably shoot me. Idiots will eventually get caught. I mean I don't even like to set out any kind of food for deer, just let them come to the fields where they already are........[Edited on October 24, 2010 at 12:12 PM. Reason : approaching? shit no]
10/24/2010 12:07:07 PM
No shining laws in Craven or Carteret County To answer the OP, my dad has reported a couple poachers. Most of the time he just calls the sheriff's office and gets a deputy to come down. The deputy takes his statement and may go talk to the suspect. [Edited on October 24, 2010 at 12:19 PM. Reason : -]

^ nice. I'lll go ahead and say to people who don't like deer hunters (responsible ones at least)the deer will either starve b/c of overpopulation and their areas being developedorfor the same reason they will get hit by a carSo more importantly, if hunted legally and properly, they are harvested and eaten. If you like meat, try venison, its better than any other lean meat out there[Edited on October 24, 2010 at 12:47 PM. Reason : nice]

I know a few years back one of my neighbors who was a decent hunter, called in a poacher on the property behind us.Sheriff shows up, ends up getting shot... that was the start of a fun night. We had more cops that night than Ive ever seen looking for this guy. They found the dudes truck, towed it. Camped his house. They got the guy about 3 days later trying to get on a plane to get the hell out of dodge.
