Cool, a movie set near Moab, UT. I'd see it just for the scenery.

Quote :
"The "amputation scene" was the handiwork of makeup effects artist Tony Gardner and his team at Alterian, Inc. They strove to be medically accurate in every minute detail, as Danny Boyle shot the entire scene in one take and every aspect of the scene needed to be functional as well as realistic.

.....

During the screenings at Telluride Film Festival, two people required medical attention. At the first screening, an audience member suffered from lightheadedness and was taken out of the screening on a gurney. During a subsequent screening, another viewer suffered a panic attack. It is unknown as to whether or not the "amputation scene" was the cause of the incidents. Similar reactions were reported at the Toronto International Film Festival."

Looks like this will be great

If my arm was "dead" and rotting, I would have no problem cutting it off - its already no use to you, its just getting in the way between you and survival

^^^My problem wouldn't be deciding whether or not it's a worthy sacrifice, it's being man enough to cut my own damn arm off and somehow still get to safety.

"SNEAK PREVIEW: 127 HOURS - FREE

127 HOURS is the true story of mountain climber Aron Ralston's (James Franco) remarkable adventure to save himself after a fallen boulder crashes on his arm and traps him in an isolated canyon in Utah. Over the next five days Ralston examines his life and survives the elements to finally discover he has the courage and the wherewithal to extricate himself by any means necessary, scale a 65 foot wall and hike over eight miles before he is finally rescued. Throughout his journey, Ralston recalls friends, lovers (Clemence Poesy), family, and the two hikers (Amber Tamblyn and Kate Mara) he met before his accident. Will they be the last two people he ever had the chance to meet? A visceral thrilling story that will take an audience on a never before experienced journey and prove what we can do when we choose life. -Written by Fox Searchlight

Saw this tonight at Witherspoon. Thought it was pretty good and very intense. Franco was great.

Saw it last night. Very good. Not quite as "epic" as I thought it was going to be coming in (read a little too much into the hype), but everything was done well IMO. Franco was great. The "arm" was extremely intense. Shuddering still thinking about it.

I still can't decide if I'm up for seeing this. People seem to love it, though.

^You've kind of got to be in the mood. It was a tad bit slower than I expected (I wasn't expecting a ton of action, but it still dragged in some points...but didn't mess up the flow of the movie if that makes any sense).

It also wasn't as "moving" as I expected it to be either. I guess I was expecting something more "moving" along the lines of "Precious"...but instead just got an amazing story about a very incredible human being.

That being said...I would definitely recommend it.

The movie, as a whole, wasn't nearly as intense as I thought it would be. Of course, that one scene is incredibly intense, but the way Danny Boyle made the movie, it's more hallucinatory than anything else. If that makes sense. It tries to make you feel what Franco's character felt, and does a tremendous job of it (right down to the claustrophobic camera angles). Highly recommended.

Like others, though, it wasn't quite how I thought it would be. I thought it would be humorless, a lot of dead silence, a lot of stuff that makes you squirm and grimace, but it wasn't (again, except for that one scene). It's more of a drama than one might think, albeit one that unfolds in an untraditional way.

I really enjoyed it. The film brings you through a wide range of emotions. Drinking his piss and cutting his arm off was gross but I was almost in tears when the helicopter took him away at the end.

Kinda squemish about "realistic" gore.

Compare this to a typical scene in Saw or Hostel.

gore never really bothers me but i couldn't help but squirm in my seat for this one.

i'm glad they lightened it up in some parts instead of making the whole movie grim. i was stressed out enough watching it the first 15 mins. gotta love the sound effect they used when he was hitting the nerve.

def worth it

I met Ralston in New Mexico five or so years ago (post-amputation). Climbed (or at one time did) with some people I climbed with. One of the few cases where the real life person is probably better looking than the actor that plays them.
