I have a 2003 Acura RSX that has 80k miles on it and last week it would not go into reverse or the stick would go to the reverse position and the car would not go anywhere and stall out.So I take it to a transmission guy here in New Bern and he says the transmission needs replacing ($1000 or so for parts+$500 labor) and the clutch and flywheel(small cracks in the flywheel) needs to be repaired/replaced($400 or more for parts+$100labor). So all in all I expect at least $2000+ for everything. And yes I did drive the hell out of the car and also I learned to drive stick on the car so even though these repairs seem a little premature they are not THAT surprising at least from what I know and what the guy said. I accept the transmission is bad because it wouldn't go into reverse but I am not sure on the clutch.. The clutch seemed fine. I plan on just driving this car till it dies in a few years so should I just replace the transmission so it is drivable and let the clutch go till it dies or replace both and hopefully make it 5-6 years? Is there anything else really expensive that generally dies at 100k+ or so miles? And of course I will try to quit driving it like a race car.

IMO if you are dropping the tranny and putting a new flywheel on it would be dumb to not do the clutch
10/5/2010 8:30:13 PM
yea you are probably right on that one... after typing all out and thinking a bit I would have to agree.. I just hope this gets it to 150-200k miles before I need another car. but i guess you never know.

^NyM410 had a similar problem with his RSX. Putting it in reverse was very difficult sometimes, and even when the stick was in reverse it wouldn't actually back up. You should shoot him a PM; I can't recall his exact problem but I think he was just low on fluid. That was all it took to fix.

how much do you want for the old tranny? I'd love it for my civic.
10/6/2010 12:13:29 AM
^^to clarify, it was the clutch fluid.

Talks of clutch fluid itt

yeah yeah yeah, it's brake fluid.[Edited on October 6, 2010 at 4:57 PM. Reason : l]

I'm just giving you a hard time

so decided to go with replacing the transmission, clutch and flywheel. $2400 for parts and labor. I guess that is what it costs for driving like a crazy teenager for 6 years
10/6/2010 6:27:35 PM
give me the old one
10/6/2010 6:49:54 PM
so what was the cost of rebuildin the old one?
10/6/2010 6:51:10 PM
I'll let you know when this , non double clutchin like he should be, rookie responds to my posts.

Something's up if the tranny is shot at 80k miles. Or maybe Acura's durability standards aren't as high as they used to be?

early model rsx's have/had some shifting problemsi was looking to buy one in 02 when they came out, but opted for a used integra and school insteadnot really sure if it's owner induced or what
10/7/2010 4:39:13 PM
I was wondering b/c I've beaten the crap out of the tranny (YS1) in my Integra. I've abused it in just about every way short of slamming it into reverse at 60 mph and it's still going strong at 280k miles
10/7/2010 4:41:23 PM
read that a missed shift intended for 4th but going into 2nd was pretty commonseems driver induced, but could be a poorly designed shift gatehaven't really followed up on it
10/7/2010 5:11:49 PM
every honda six speed short of the s2000 has had problems IIRC
10/7/2010 6:09:19 PM
Isn't the transmission in question a 5 speed?
10/8/2010 8:35:42 AM
if it's not a type S, it's a 5 speed in the RSX, iirc
10/8/2010 9:15:57 AM
Is this due to ricer shift paterns.
10/8/2010 11:23:50 AM
oh god 5 speed, i still want it. whats the hold up here. you said yourself its broken.
10/8/2010 2:46:47 PM
I have a b18 tranny with a LSD just sitting. Trying to make u feel jealous Quinn. I'm letting it rust in my yard. My dog pees on it
10/8/2010 3:43:08 PM
B18 is garbage
10/8/2010 5:10:44 PM
So from what failed in the transmission and the timing of when it failed I think the stress of driving through a foot and a half of water caused a roller bearing in the transmission to fail. So it was driver error
