This limping around for the first hour I wake up and anytime i get out of my office chair after sitting for an hour is getting old fast.

sounds like you're getting old fast too
9/22/2010 10:58:07 AM
yeah, this shit started a few days after i turned 32.incidentally i also found my first grey hair around this time.

I had a spell of this earlier this year after trying out a new park of sandals (Chacos). It went away by resting my feets, taking naprosen (Aleve) twice a day, and icing after working out. I tried the boot for a while too, but that failed because I sleep on my stomach.

Get a lacrosse ballstand on lacrosse ball with one foot at a time, putting weight into the ball through your heel
9/22/2010 11:29:29 AM
I froze ice in my nalgene bottle and did the same thing

take your shoes off and make fists with your toes on the carpet.

My dad has it pretty bad (he has really really flat feet). He wears orthotics in his shoes and is perfectly fine. And he's a very competitive triathlete, so he puts a lot of pressure on them.In relation to the OP, but not the thread topic...I just recently found my first gray hair...at 27.

barefoot running (or Five Fingers clad running) seems to be sort of fad-ish at the moment, but some of it seems to make biomechanical sense.couldn't hurt to try i guess.i dont have any of the PF problems yet, but my dad does, so im trying to be as preventative as possible.PARALLEL THREAD TOPICfirst grays at like 26. i get them on the sides of my head in clusters[Edited on September 22, 2010 at 12:39 PM. I, too, had this earlier this year. Stretching is crucial and will make it go away. Google the stretches. I really liked the stair stretches for convenience. Just make sure you actually relax your feet during the lowest part of the stretch rather than just doing a calf raise.
9/22/2010 4:24:24 PM
^get new shoes too, made mine go away
9/22/2010 6:13:09 PM
^ Agreed...I'm rolling on New Balance 993's now and they are like butta.

Bobby, I am the resident TWW podiatrist at your service !
9/23/2010 7:25:20 PM
Nuoq, what do you recommend for extensor tendinitis? Or is that outside your area of specialty?
9/24/2010 12:40:21 PM
WhaaaaaaaatI've had this shit for like two months. Never knew what the problem was, haven't been to the doctor yet. I always forget about it because it's only bad when I wake up in the morning or when I've been driving for like 3+ hours. Thanks Dr. TWW. This thread has blown my mind. God I've gotta lose some weight. I need to go to the Woodfoot clinic.]

stretch a lot, especially calves and hamstrings. yoga helps.
9/24/2010 2:34:38 PM
late 20's? Pffft. I got my first gray hair at perhaps 19. It's pretty bad at 30, by 35 I'll probably be more than half gray.[/thread hijack, no foot problems -yet- though I probably ought to lose some weight to make their job easier]

I had Achilles Tendinitis earlier this year and it was a bitch. I had to sleep with a boot on. I got new running shoes too. It sucks getting new shoes when the old ones are spotless.

Barefeet
9/26/2010 8:13:00 PM
I don't know if I have this or not? I get INTENSE pain in the bottom of my heels if I've been on my feet for consecutive hours. I don't have any discomfort in the morning and it only gets worse and worse until I can sit down. I can't pin it down to any particular shoe that I wear, activity, or how long I've been on my feet either. Is there anything else it could be?

I started getting this about a month ago.I kinda like the way it feels. Mild pain/discomfort is distracting in a good way.
10/2/2010 11:24:28 AM
I have this now. It is horrible. Bobby, did yours go away?
12/3/2010 5:19:43 PM
nope. I mainly use the frozen water bottle treatment when it flares up, and if it gets really bad, ibuprofen.but I haven't found anything other than short term remedies.

I used to work in a running store and we always heard great things about the Strassburg Sock.http://www.runningwarehouse.com/descpage-STRASOC.html

oddly enough i had this issue when i was younger (elementary school) much more often than i get it now....
12/31/2010 10:06:49 PM
i've had this shit for about 3 years now. it's caused bone spurs in both heels from the constant stretching, tearing and tightening of the tendon... i really haven't been able to do anything for it but stretch very well before running or playing basketball, and i've cut down to really only playing basketball one day a week most months, and 2 a week during Jan/February and in the summer.after a while, i've just sort of dealt with it. hurts like hell sometimes, though.[Edited on January 5, 2011 at 7:41 AM. my wife bought me tempurpedic slippers to wear around the house, and the pain has gotten much better from not walking around on hard floors all the time as Nuoq suggested. I did a 3 mile run last night, but i'm paying for it today.
1/5/2011 10:51:39 AM
I think I am starting to get it. It hurts like hell to walk when I first get out of bed. The pain usually last for 3-5 minutes depending on how much walking I do in that time period.

BobbyDigital,You need to go to a podiatrist and get some orthotics. You shouldn't "avoid running" as treatment for a permanent problem. I said it earlier, my dad had a severe case of plantar fasciitis. He finally saw a podiatrist after trying almost every single thing listed in this thread. He got some orthotics made and now he has no pain whatsoever. He's been a competitive triathlete for the past 30 years (before and after the problem).[Edited on January 5, 2011 at 12:38 PM. You don't have to be old to be afflicted with this. I got it bad when I was 25 and running 30 miles a week or so and living in NYC.I did therapy till it was gone and the more or less stopped running on a regular basis. I don't run anymore b/c I hate running and don't want to spend $texas on orthodics and good running shoes
1/5/2011 1:41:48 PM
^You should have good running shoes regardless of whether or not you have plantar fasciitis. My dad can only wear Brooks...and the ones he gets are usually around $70 or $80.And while orthodics might be a little expensive to begin with, it's pretty much a one time cost (my dad has had the same orthodics for years). He transfers his orthodics from shoe to shoe.I would say that being able to run and not alter your life because of foot pain is well worth the one time cost.

I completely tore mine two years ago in a basketball game. The ligament snapped and popped the inside of my heel. I thought someone kicked my shoe and turned around after I hit a shot... there wasn't anyone there.I ran down the court fine and then when I went to get set into defensive position... I couldn't put ANY weight on that foot. I limped off the court and had two blueish black spots where it snapped and hit the opposite side. The doctor said that I performed a surgery myself and that it would heal up fine (I forget what he said they do that for). I had to stretch and freeze water bottles and roll those around a lot. After a couple of months on crutches and some rehab with shoe orthotics... I've been fine.I play basketball several times a week with no issues now.
1/7/2011 4:29:38 PM
I got dress orthotics (for my work shoes) and some sneaker orthotics (for my running shoes). Helps a lot. Hardly notice the pain even when I'm walking around at home/waking up. Also had a night splint (stopped wearing it). Definitely got all the way up on that deductible.[Edited on January 7, 2011 at 5:49 PM. Reason : .]

came across the following, and got the feeling that strength AND flexibility in the calf (and leg muscles in general) would help:http://ajs.sagepub.com/content/26/3/360.abstractalso fyi:http://scholar.google.com/scholar?hl=en&q=plantar+fasciitis&btnG=Search&as_sdt=1%2C34&as_ylo=&as_vis=0

^my physical therapist said to stretch the hell out of your calves before running (or any activity involving running) and it would help a lot with plantar fasciitis.
2/7/2011 4:20:15 PM
one thing that helped mine was rolling my foot on a frozen water bottle for hours on endthat and rest ... havent had it since
2/8/2011 12:38:55 PM
What I've found to work better than a frozen bottle of water is a fith of liquor kept in the freezer. The bottle's diameter is bigger so easier to roll on the arch of your foot. After I got planar fasciitis to go away the first time, when I was running a lot I used the preventative measure of soaking my feet in ice water (in a large cooler) for about 20 minutes, continuously shortly after finishing my run. After a few minutes your feet go numb so you don't really notice the cold, but its not really comfortable. It works though.

you have a funny way of wording an injury that at the time you didn't know would help you. Either way glad it improved you.

^ My bad.
2/9/2011 11:39:21 AM
so I'm on week 2 of P90x. I've noticed a marked improvement in the pain. I think strengthening my calf muscle has probably helped. Or it could be coincidence. we'll see.
