I got a vasectomy in july. It was a piece of cake-- took like 15 minutes in the doctor's office. My insurance wouldn't cover it, but it was only $500. I was sore for about a week, but nothing terrible. At first, sex was a little odd because I knew shit was different "down there". But after that adjustment, it was all good. I was afraid that cumming would be different, but it's the same as before (just no live swimmers). I went back to the doc a month ago and I'm totally sterile. No kids for me!

I'd be glad to answer any questions about it based on my experience. But, I'd say GO FOR IT.

shmorri2, a vasectomy is a great idea if you know for a fact you don't wanna have kids. There is another option though. Has your wife looked into getting herself "fixed"? There is a procedure called Essure that is supposedly less invasive, more effective, and easier than a vasectomy or getting her tubes tied. She would be the one in the doctor's office but it should be covered under a normal co-pay doctor's visit. It may be something to look into. I believe it's http://www.essure.com. Good luck with whatever you both choose.

My GF had her tubes tied several years ago because her ex-husband didn't want kids. Now that she is with me, she regrets it and we have been considering reversal. The reversal procedure is WAY more expensive and is only like 75% effective.

I tell you this, because you should make sure you are making the decision for YOU, and are willing to live with it. Condoms and BC work just fine if you are on the fence.

^question...did you have any trouble having the procedure done with you being young? I know some doctors are hesitant to do anything because of a younger age whether or not your in a steady marriage.

^ nope. i was worried about that too, but the doctor pretty much asked if i had thought about it and reminded me that i should view it as a permanent procedure even though it can usually be reversed.

the only age-related variable is perhaps the fact that my student insurance plan wouldn't cover it. but, again, the cost ($500 for everything-- consult, procedure, tests, etc.) is very reasonable for a procedure that will save you the tens of thousands of dollars that kids cost.

That totally makes sense. If money ($500) is an issue, I don't think you should be considering having the procedure in the first place. It's good to know that age wasn't a variable. I guess it's all about finding the right doctor. Did you have it done here in town? If so, do you mind sharing which office preformed the procedure?

I live in Columbia, South Carolina, so I had it done here. If anything, I think you'd have less to worry about in terms of doctors not wanting to do it in Raleigh (since it's a more progressive city than Columbia). However, I could see it being slightly more expensive in Raleigh but probably not much more. And, you probably have more options to shop around in Raleigh

I got a vasectomy back in May. As someone mentioned earlier it was pretty quick. If you ever have it done, I would reccommend getting some compression shorts to hold your guys up for about a week. Someone told me to get a jockstrap so thats what I used, but the edges/seems of the jockstrap rested right on top of the stitches. So I had to choose between the pain of something pressing up against the incesions or the dull/vomit feeling of having my boys hang and get bruised up.

And I have 3 kids so I wasn't on the fence or anything about making up my mind

^ hahaha... totally forgot to mention the need to get good shorts. my balls were swollen and hanging down a good 4 inches more than usual for two weeks after the procedure and jogging was nearly impossible. it kinda made me feel like the man having huge hanging nuts though

Kinda. They like to tell you that you should consider it a permanent procedure since the procedure to reverse it is much more complex, more $, and is not guaranteed to work

Considering the female procedure is much more invasive and can have some pretty brutal side effects, if it's the guy pushing for sterilization it should be the guy who gets the procedure.

^^ it's really not very painful at all. it's more an "odd sensation" while they're doing it than anything. And, yes, I would do it all over again. I would do it once a year if I had to. And, it was never an option in my mind to have my (common-law) wife have the procedure done instead of me, knowing what I know about how much harder the procedure is for women.

I would definitely do it again. The procedure is only uncomfortable for a couple of mins until your numb. I just laid on the couch for the next 3 days to help the boys heal. I've heard of guys going back to work the next day, and while it's possible if you have an office job where you don't move a lot, I wouldn't reccomend it.
A few days of a little uncomfort is far greater than having to wear condoms or worry about your wife taking a pill every day (not to mention my wife got pregnant twice while on BC).

From the public health standpoint...I worry about long term sterilization solutions because it might prevent a baby, but it doesn't protect a person from STDs. There are a lot of foolish people out there who only care about knocking someone up in the heat of the moment and they don't worry so much about catching yuckies from their partner.

Now for folks in monogamous relationships who don't want kids, go for it. If you're young and worry that things might change, put some boys on ice.

I totally agree with what bottombaby said about catching something. I think if you are married then you should go for it. I think if you have an "open relationship" you should still use protection when with others...that's just common sense though.

I still think a woman should look into the Essure procedure. From what it says on there site, it sounds a lot more reliable and less painful than a vasectomy. It's something I've thought about doing personally (with me being a girl and all, a vasectomy is not an option) but I don't know anyone who has. It still seems like it might be a much better option for a couple. Who knows though...

As a woman, I like the idea of an IUD. They're good for 5-10 years. I think it's a better option and a doctor is going to be more willing to do it for a younger person. Then when your IUD runs out and you still haven't changed your mind, you can choose a more permanent solution. Doctors can be pretty funny sometimes about sterilizing younger people.

aside from the fact that doctors in the US can't use the smaller-sized IUD like doctors can in Europe, so if you have a small uterus you're fucked anyway

Some doctors won't sterilize someone under 30, others realize it's better for them to do it than force you to go to Mexico and catch some antibiotic resistant superbug all because you don't want kids.

The head of gynecological surgery at UNC is an idiot so don't bother there. He told me I'd change my mind and I told him I'd change my surgeon. I still consider getting sterilized while I was open anyway one of the best decisions of my life.

I said it was fucked up that it's not covered because birth control is the one elective procedure that should be fully covered by our government, IMO. It's fucked up that you can't just go to a clinic and have this done for free.

That being said, I'm definitely getting it done after 2 kids, covered by insurance or not.
