I mention Falcons fans because we're pretty much natural rivals (they entered the league in '66, Saints in '67) and the Rams & 49ers got moved to the new NFC West. Atlanta's our only long-term rival that still holds that status. So of Atlanta (~45 years), Carolina (~15 years), and Tampa Bay (< 10 years) - I can only see one of them having built up enough history to say they hate the Saints. I don't dislike the Panthers/Bucs combined as much as I hate the Falcons.

But hey, that's just me.

Yeah, I'm Falcons fan, so I fucking know that.

What I'm talking about is the naivete to think that you can still play the "we're the underdogs, everyone should love us" card after having won the Super Bowl. The average NFL fan gets tired of the champs pretty quickly. The Saints are no different. There's rarely any legit reason to hate a team that wins, but people do, unfailingly. Just ask how many people hate the Patriots, or the Steelers, or the Cowboys, whether they have a natural rivalry or not. The Saints' shit stinks as much as any other team.

We're not playing the underdog card. Is it the team's fault that no one in sports media feels like the Saints won't succeed again this year? What are they supposed to do, mope, or use that as motivation? The Vikings, Packers, Eagles, Cowboys, Falcons (LOL), and even Panthers have all been picked to represent the NFC in the Super Bowl this year. I've got no problem with that on its own, but nobody even mentions the defending Super Bowl champions.

We've been called the worst team to ever win a Super Bowl, we've had people say all 13 wins in a row last year were luck, we had people saying we'd blow homefield advantage last year, there's crying-ass Viking fans who can't deal with the fact that they didn't take care of business down the stretch last season OR in this season's opener, John Clayton ranked us fucking seventh in his 2010 season-opening power rankings. Everyone says the Vikings lost the NFC CG more than the Saints won it. Same about the Colts in the Super Bowl.

I guess it's a good thing that the '07 Giants are a recent example of such flagrant disrespect in sports media, because prior to that I can't remember a team having its title season trashed so badly.

Oh yeah, it's not like nobody in the media talks about the saints constantly. It's not like they have had approximately 50,000 sports center specials over the past 8 months. It's not like they are in pretty much every NFL commercial this offseason.

Show me a credible source picking the Panthers to represent the NFC.

Steelers in 05-06. That's the worst superbowl team I've ever seen, and I know a lot of people who acknowledge it.

The Vikings did lose the game, AP fumbled it away. It doesn't mean the saints didn't win it, every team has to get a little lucky on the way to the superbowl, the Saints just had a bit more luck than most teams (except the pats, although that probably wasn't luck).

exciting second half last night - any word on bush's injury yet? and damn the secondary looked pretty awful on that last 49ers drive.

also, thank God hartley hit those two field goals - not just for the win last night, but for security in the kicking game the rest of the season. i have feeling that guy's confidence is fragile and the team doesn't need him bricking gimmes early in the season.

yeah, 29 yards is about as close to a gimme as you're going to get. He needs to kick in the Superdome all week long, because if we blow a game to the fucking cellar-dweller Panthers because he can't make a simple kick, I'm going to lead the charges to have him walked the fuck out of town then jumped for his Super Bowl ring until the real Garrett Hartley shows up.

NFL in 2105: The New Orleans Saints. This is the 100 year anniversary of when the Saints single handedly saved the entire eastern seaboard, turning back a category 70 hurricane by linking arms and pushing the storm back out to sea.

The kicker choked...but I wouldn't say the Saints choked the win away. The Falcons just punched them in the mouth. The Saints run D is abysmal. They better fix that shit if they want to make a run in the playoffs this year. And while he's playing well, Drew Brees isn't exactly lighting the world on fire like he has the past few years. He can't carry the team if the offense can't get on the field while the defense is being ran all over the field.

We all know the numbers, 50 rushes (WHEN DOES THIS HAPPEN???), 202 yards, 4.0 yards a pop

Out of the 50 attempts, 32 of them went for 3 yards or less (nearly 2/3 of their attempts). In the NFL, the defense is winning the battle when a team is being stopped at 3 yards or less.

No gain or negative yardage
9 times

One yard gain
7 times

Two yard gain
5 times

Three yard gain
11 times

On 3 runs the Falcons gained 66 yards on their biggest run plays of the game. The remaining 47 carries yielded 136 yards (a 2.9 yard average). I'll take that any day, because it usually means a team is forcing itself to run. You don't expect another 32 pass plays to go along with that. A team typically runs about 67 plays per game. Atlanta ran 82.

The bigger problem was not being able to guard Tony Gonzalez on third-and-whatever, then completely ignoring him on the second fourth-and-something. For the life of me, I don't understand the concept of single-covering him with the following people:

- a 5'10", 205lb strong safety (trust me, Roman Harper is NOT 6'0") who suffers with pass coverage
- a 6'2", 245lb slow linebacker who just switched to strong-side this season
- a 5'10" special teams ace/cornerback
- a 5'10" rookie cornerback
- Tracy Porter

with no help over the top. On basically every catch he made, he was either single-guarded or not-at-all-guarded. That was a poor gameplan.

^When you run the ball that many times, you're going to break big runs...that's par for the course. Bottom line is that their run defense is weak (only 3 games...but at the bottom of the league...and only in the middle of pass defense).

If teams can prevent NO from jumping ahead early and they can run the ball and keep Brees off the field...then they've got a really good chance. NO's offense seems to be lacking that spark they've had for the past few years. Which means the D needs to step it up...and they haven't really done it so far. Enough to barely win the first two games...but not this past one, and probably not a good number for the rest of the year.

Yeah. Teams have been playing a base package cover-4 (or cover-4 look in short passing situations) against us - just dropping the safeties AND cornerbacks deep, and making us take underneath stuff. We got some shots downfield against Atlanta but that was in extended coverage packages. Our running game is woefully amiss, we really need to get back on track there. Our guards were regularly tossing soft negroes to the ground last season, this year they're struggling to get a push (though their pass blocking has been pretty good for the most part).

Defensively, my biggest worry is that Dante Rosario will be a household name by October 4th. We've struggled to cover tight ends, though we've faced a good trio in Shiancoe, Vernon Davis, and especially Gonzalez. He converted way too many third-and-passing situation plays. Atlanta usually failed when we blanketed him. Of course, we went ahead and left him all alone on a fourth down play Somehow I don't see any other team this season running the ball 50 times on us, unless they finish with less than 20 pass attempts. Holding Atlanta to 4.0 yards per carry is worth a feather in their cap, to be sure - they could have completely wilted down the stretch but didn't. That was just a case of too many opportunities.

I really think that game will serve as a wakeup call to the team. We could just as easily have any record other than the one we have. It's good to still have a winning record but now we have to outpace Atlanta (I'm not worried about Tampa Bay long-term).
