UAFA is legislation that would extend immigration equality to married gay bi-national couples. Various versions of this bill have been tried every couple years for the last decade and its support seems to be getting a little stronger each time. It has 124 cosponsors in the house and 23 cosponsors in the senate (according to wiki). Its best shot of passing is as a part of comprehensive immigration reform.I love how they do the balanced reporting by having someone who opposes it speak, who says laws shouldn't be changed b/c that isn't the way the law is currently written. The particular law that prevents spouses of gay citizens in the US from immigrating is DOMA. DOMA prevents states that have marriage equality from getting federal recognition, and additionally since the federal immigration law is based off the terms like "married" DOMA excludes gays. (*except maybe in MA where DOMA no longer applies b/c of a court ruling, but its a very recent thing so I doubt anyone has tried anything yet, but it may well be that gay spouses aren't allowed to immigrate into the US anywhere except for MA)

Simple solution, dissolve the concept of government endorsed marriage.

^While that might not be a terrible idea, there are way too many social conservatives in office for that to happen in our life times, whereas comprehensive immigration reform will be taken up in the next few years. A few pics from DC, NY, & LA:

a bigger deal to me is solving our illegal immigration problem. i could not care less if two gay people want to marry regardless of their nationality. its just silly to worry about the second thing without solving the first one.

Yeah, that is why they're pushing for it as a part of comprehensive immigration reform, and showing up at the immigration reform rallies to build alliances.

They've just increased their sponsor/co-sponsorship on UAFA. Here is where it stands now:

agree with it in theory, but seriously, this is like getting worked up over a door ding when you have three flat tires.[Edited on September 23, 2010 at 4:55 PM. Reason : .]

I think the people's reactions in the back ground of this picture sum it up...no one cares - nextfix the immigration issue, fix the gay marriage issue - don't create some bastard combo of them both.
9/23/2010 5:10:50 PM
DOMA & our current immigration laws combine to create the bastard combo, not the group trying to fix it. And comprehensive immigration reform is all the more comprehensive if it fixes such problems. And DOMA wont come up for a repeal vote for at least 5 to 10 years, immigration reform will come up for a vote in the next couple of years (more likely it'll be struck down by the court as the lower court unconstitutional rulings work there way up). No reason to let a problem persist when there's a chance to fix it.

They've been laying the groundwork for this for over 10 years, and introduced it many times, building a little more support/education/advocacy on it each time.http://www.washingtonblade.com/2011/02/09/immigration-talks-intrigue-uafa-supporters/

They're doing a whole valentines day theme push today. Here is a story that is being shared on many blogs:http://www.dailykos.com/story/2011/02/14/944185/-%E2%99%A5-Today,-Love-Doesn%E2%80%99t-Matter-%E2%99%A5

if you stop letting the gays in, you wouldn't have to worry about breaking up families

I get where you're coming from, but I think a better plan is to just lobby for an immigration policy that lets decent people into the country and avoid drawing additional opposition by adding a GLBT component to it.

Just open up the borders and eliminate all entitlement programs, problem solved.

^^Are your only posts on TWW going to be hating in Supplanter SB threads from now on?

No, he's right. A well-financed corporation bussed me in to TWW, and paid me to post this, not because I believe in this particular cause, but because it secretly makes the organization that orchestrated this post wealthier.Unfortunately they did it in a stealthy way, such that I came across the article myself rather than it being mailed or e-mailed to me, and it was so stealthy they didn't even pay me

With the ruling against DOMA this issue is largely solved. I don't have much to add to this thread, other than it's nice to have a thread come resolution and conclusion.Likewise, the ruling against the DOMA marriage ban also cleans up some stuff from the repeal of the DADT military ban. There were some rights and responsibilities related to military couples that couldn't be extended with DOMA in place. It does make me wonder what organizations like OutServe, the Service Legal Defense Fund, AFER, and Immigration Equality will do now that their main issues are gone. It seems like a lot of the LGBT activism will now shift from a broad variety of diverse issues, into a greater focus on the state level marriage battles.http://immigrationequality.org/2013/06/the-end-of-doma-what-your-family-needs-to-know/

Not necessarily on topic, but didn't see another thread one on point. Figured this would be a good place since Supplanter started the thread and last posted here. Question for Supplanter, since you work at Democracy NC and frequently use TWW as a place to further your organization's agenda, any thoughts/comments on the ongoing Civitas Institute's investigation into Democracy NC's exec. director, Bob Hall?http://www.nccivitas.org/2012/sbe-whosincharge/http://www.nccivitas.org/2013/guiding-ncsbe-left/http://www.nccivitas.org/2012/lobbyist-bob-hall-and-gary-bartlett-planned-attack-on-republican-legislature/
