Anybody happen to have a Clear Home or Mobile (3G & 4G) modem available for sale?

Make sure you get the MAC Address and check with me before you buy it. If it is attached to an account with a past due balance, or is reported as stolen, you won't be able to activate it.

Also, a lot of the people selling them on eBay expect you to take over their existing account. So make sure you ask about that too.

Really, the only scenario where you would be able to activate a used piece of equipment would be the following:

1. Customer was on a No Contract account and purchased the equipment up front. (i.e. wasn't leasing it)
2. Customer canceled the CLEAR account, and has no past due balance tied to it.
3. You are taking over an active account from an existing Clear customer.

I would be willing to guess that 90% of the modems for sale on eBay do not fit that criteria. So be careful.

We have one we had a temporary during a move. Bought new in late May (less than 3 months old) paid 79.99, no contract did a prepaid month to month, paid up front. Clear Series G model WIXB-175. Was just gonna closet it, but willing to take $65 for it. We still have receipt and all paperwork.

^ as long as that was canceled properly and there is nothing past due, then it should be good. Although quite frankly, you can get the same unit brand new or $15 more and know it is good to go. Doesn't seem worth it to save just $15. If you are trying to go the used route, I wouldn't pay more than $30. Or you could lease a new one for $4.99/mo, and know that it is covered for the life that you are a customer.

leasing a modem is the biggest racket ever, imo.

I can see it from both sides. As a consumer, I would probably buy my modem, especially if you are planning to be a customer for over 18 months. (roughly the time it takes to pay for itself).

However, leasing has it's advantages. Aside from saving the upfront cost, it is like insurance. If you buy your modem it is only covered for a year, but if you lease then it is covered for the life you are a customer.

I get paid the same either way, so I am totally unbiased on this one. I guess my advice would be that if you have the money to spend up front, then buy your equipment. That is, if you plan to be a long term (over 18 months) customer. If you are planning to quit in a few months like the dude above, then lease it. It only costs $40 to cancel a Clear contract now, which I don't think was the case when the guy above decided to do the No Contract route.

That being said, if your credit sucks then you don't really have a choice. You have to buy it and pay the $35 activation fee.
