So I know there was a ban on these in Raleigh, but I am trying to find out if they are still allowed in Cary? My house seems to be wired one for (I'm sure it used to have one) but currently there is nothing functioning in that capacity.

There was a ban on them? Holy shit, that blows. However, I will say that I haven't had one for nearly 2 years and I haven't missed it. We just put everything that we would have put down the disposal in a grocery bag and put it in the freezer. Then when we take the trash, we just take it along. Keeps it from stinking up the garbage. There's a little free country livin' tip for ya![Edited on July 19, 2010 at 10:58 AM. Reason : a]

when I first moved out here I was totally freaked out that there wasn't a garbage disposal. but we have a septic tank, so disposals are a bad idea. but the adjustment was way easier than I thought it would be.i used to put all my table scraps in the disposal, but I would clog that shit up at least once a month. freezing them and carrying them to the dump with the trash is way better in the long run, and just as convenient imo.

I would be grossed out with a leftover bag in my freezer

^ With all the gardening you do I'm surprised you don't compost or at least toss the non-meat scraps into the garden.

the dogs get the meat scraps, and we compost the veggie scrapspretty much the only stuff we freeze and toss is when we do seafood or when we do chicken (shrimp shells, chicken bones, etc etc)[Edited on July 19, 2010 at 11:09 AM. Reason : a]

What was the thinking behind the ban?
7/19/2010 12:41:09 PM
it was more a lack of thinking that led to the ban.
7/19/2010 12:43:21 PM
aha fair enough.
7/19/2010 12:44:24 PM
but apparently they decided that people pour grease down garbage disposals, which clogs the sewer pipes, and if garbage disposals were banned, then that would stop people from doing that.yes, that is really what they thought.[Edited on July 19, 2010 at 12:46 PM. Reason : stupid autocorrect.]

Well shit, good to know. Thank you all for the quick and informative responses.

I thought the ban was only on new construction.

^^^ Wow yeah, that's pretty damn dumb.

And there was something laughable like a $25,000 daily fine if you got caught breaking the ban.ETA: Aside form that, grinding food scraps up into bits is still less than ideal for the sewer system/your pipes. It's better to throw them into the trash if you're not maintaining a frozen shrimp shell and chicken bone collection.[Edited on July 19, 2010 at 3:10 PM. Reason : []

I remember having to meet shady dealers in dark alleyways to buy disposals back during prohibition.
7/19/2010 3:12:16 PM
I used to run trunk fulls of disposals from Greensboro into Wake County in my Charger.
