Spiderman 4 cancelled: message_topic.aspx?topic=585864

"26 year old Andrew Garfield was today cast as Spiderman

This morning it was announced that 26 year old British actor Andrew Garfield has been cast in the coveted role of Spiderman.

The casting comes after the powers that be in Hollywood decided that, rather than going ahead and making Spiderman 4 with Tobey Maguire, (Who would be reprising the role he played in the previous three movies). They would rather re-boot the series and send the character of Peter Parker back to high school. (Apparently this will help tap into the Twilight and High School Musical audience)

From wiki

Quote :
"In 2007, Spider-Man 4 entered development, with Raimi attached to direct and Maguire, Dunst and other cast members set to reprise their roles. Both a fourth and a fifth movie were planned, and at one time the idea of shooting the two sequels concurrently was under consideration. However, Raimi stated in March 2009 that only the fourth film was currently in development and that if there were fifth and sixth films, the two films would actually be a continuation of each other.[31][32][33][34] James Vanderbilt was hired in October 2007 to pen the screenplay, after initial reports in early 2007 that Sony Pictures was in contact with David Koepp, who wrote the first Spider-Man film.[35][36] The script was subsequently rewritten by Pulitzer-winning playwright David Lindsay-Abaire, and rewritten again by Gary Ross in October 2009.[37] Sony also engaged Vanderbilt to write scripts for Spider-Man 5 and Spider-Man 6.[36]

In 2007, Raimi expressed interest in portraying the transformation of Dr. Curt Connors into his villainous alter-ego, the Lizard; the character's actor Dylan Baker and producer Grant Curtis have also been enthusiastic about the idea.[38][39][40] It was reported in December 2009 that John Malkovich was in negotiations to play Vulture, and that Anne Hathaway would play Felicia Hardy, though she would not have transformed into the Black Cat, as in the comics. Instead, Raimi's Felicia was expected to become a brand-new superpowered figure called the Vulturess.[41]

Sony Pictures announced in January 2010 that plans for Spider-Man 4 had been cancelled due to Raimi's withdrawal from the project. Raimi reportedly ended his participation due to doubt that he could meet the planned May 6, 2011 release date while upholding the film creatively.[42]

Simultaneous with the cancellation of Spider-Man 4, Sony announced that the franchise would be rebooted with a new director and new cast. The reboot film is scheduled to be released on July 3, 2012 in 3-D and will focus on Peter Parker developing his abilities in high school.[42][43] Sony also confirmed that James Vanderbilt will write the script for the new film and Marc Webb will direct the next Spider-Man film.[44] Entertainment Weekly called Vanderbilt's script "gritty, contemporary" and referenced Batman Begins, Christopher Nolan's reboot of the Batman film series, which also reinvented the tone of the series.[45] There is speculation that the reboot will be based on the Ultimate Spider-Man comics. Evidence of this includes Brian Michael Bendis, creator of the Ultimate Spider-Man series, meeting with the movie crew. Bendis tweeted, "Just spent a very interesting morning at Sony with the entire spidey movie team!! Very very cool stuff!!"[46] Alvin Sargent has been hired to re-write the script.[47] On June 9, 2010 rumours surfaced that the villain for the new reboot could be the Lizard.[48] The film will begin shooting in December 2010.[1]

In May 2010, the list of actors to play Spider-Man included Jamie Bell, Josh Hutcherson, Frank Dillane, Alden Ehrenreich and Andrew Garfield.[49] However, in June 2010 the Los Angeles Times reported that the shortlist expanded to include Aaron Johnson and Anton Yelchin.[50] The final shortlist was reported to also include Logan Lerman and Michael Angarano.[51] On June 27, 2010, the final and confirmed short list was announced. Jamie Bell (Flags of Our Fathers), Anton Yelchin (Star Trek), Aaron Johnson (Kick-Ass), Andrew Garfield (The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus), Logan Lerman (Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief), and Alden Ehrenreich (Tetro) were all on it.[52] On July 1, 2010, it was officially confirmed that the role will go to Andrew Garfield.[1] Garfield is almost 27, raising concerns about his ability to play a high school student. The website HitFix has reported that Sony has realized this and instead the new movie will have Parker starting the series as a college student.[2]"

Why won't someone just shoot these people.

On another note, someone should make this thread:

Quote :
"Venom

In July 2007, Avi Arad revealed a Venom spin-off was in the works.[53] The studio commissioned Jacob Aaron Estes to write a script, but rejected it the following year. In September 2008, Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese signed on to write.[54] Stan Lee has been signed on to make a cameo in the film.[55] Rhett Reese later revealed that they had written two drafts for the film and that the studio is pushing the film forward.[56] Gary Ross has been called to do a rewrite, and may also direct the film.[57] Variety has stated that Venom will become an anti-hero instead of a villain. This suggests that it will be an adaption of Venom: Lethal Protector, the comic book spin-off that portrays Venom as an anti-hero, with Spider-Man as a guest star.[58]"

I have no real issue with a reboot, since it gets Raimi off the movie.

Spider-man totally should've been Donald Glover though.

This seems way too soon.

Reboots should happen 15-20 years after the last film in the original series, where its basically a different generation of kids who are going to be watching and identifying with that series. Here, everyone knows Tobey as Spiderman, and this English fag isn't going to change that.

can we just redo spiderman 3? is there a rule against just kind of redoing a movie and a story? it had so much potential and they just fucked everything up, people may still be willing to see a new version

yeah, but the first two spider-man movies were fine, especially the 2nd one. spider-man 3 was just a horrible abortion of a movie

i'm still shaking my head at whomever thought it was a good idea to cast topher fucking grace as venom, and then the horrible usage of the character in general

I'm kind of sick of the way Hollywood seems to run these superhero franchises. We now have a new Spiderman after the first one of the last series came out in 2002 and there may be a new Hulk for the 3rd time in as many movies since 2003. They pump out shit over and over again and instead of trying to keep the quality up the first time they just reboot it a few years later.

^^I just assumed that Spiderman 3 was horrible on purpose, as in Raimi came to the conclusion that he'd be stuck doing Spiderman movies forever so he purposely sabotaged part 3 to forever disassociate himself with the series.

And yeah, the last thing I want to see is another Spiderman movie where 60 minutes is dedicated to obtaining and acclimating to the powers and the other 60 minutes is dedicated to teenage relationship drama.

It was just Raimi making a Raimi movie, instead of a Spider-man movie like he had with the previous two.

I actually heard rumors (on the internets, so who knows how much truth there is to them) that Sony kept interfering and making Raimi put in tons of shit that he didn't want to. I think he didn't even want to put Venom in it but Sony made him to please the fans or some shit. He got pissed so he deliberately put stupid stuff in it to make it worse.

^I could definitely see that, the whole movie just had a huge sell out to get the most viewers quality, especially it seemed to get a younger and younger audience, the thing that really hurts the movie is that the dark knight came along the year after I think, where nolan clearly didn't compromise at all in the dark and serious stuff and it still outsold spiderman 3 plus the critics actually liked it

and the other issue was that they just crammed too much stuff in to one movie, three supervillains is just too much, the most clear logical thing to do was to split the story in to two final movies, I remember I was big on getting venom in the movie and didn't give a shit about the sandman but I actually think now he can be a really cool character so they should have just focused on him and then just have built up to venom for the final movie

he got his powers at a science exhibit, then took the opportunity to design and build his own web shooters

you think a kid like that works out?

If they split part 3 into two movies my feeling would be that you'd end up with two unbearable bad movies instead of one. Seriously, I couldn't imagine suffering another 120 minutes with those characters.
