windows 7 ultimate 64-bit, offending drive is a 1.5tb samsung HD154UInever had this happen before...is this triggered by S.M.A.R.T.? the drive is less than 6 months old and, as far as i can recall, i haven't had any power issues or unexpected crashes...the message doesn't come up every time windows boots up, but maybe every 2nd or 3rd timeshould i just back it up, do a full format, and put my stuff back on? or send it in for warranty replacement? is it possible this is a fluke and the drive is fine?

Things that I'm reading about the error online include the usual sort of make a backup, and run Scandisk to check for actual errors.

i'm not sure that samsung has a worse track record than any of the other big names...i, for one, like for my drives to be fast and quiet, so samsung was an obvious choice

i too, like hard drives that are quiet and fast.

i've gotten this error daily on my work desktop for over a year now. "SMART error. A hard drive reports that it may fail". None of the work I do is actually stored on my machine, i use remote desktop for everything work related so i've never really bothered with it.

That's probably a good thing. SMART errors are usually fairly reliable, so I'd avoid putting anything of value on that drive.

well, i've got acronis backing it up right now, which i should have been doing all along, since this is my "everything" drive...all of my pictures, documents (papers and tests dating back to high school), etci'll then reformat and have it checked

it lies about my external every now and then

probably simple, but have you tried running chkdsk? use the /f/v/r options for /fix errors, /verbose output, and /restore data from bad sectors. Sometimes if it's just a small error such as bad clusters/sectors, a chkdsk will make it happy again.

i haven't yet...before messing with it i wanted to back up everything, in case it's about to die
