There was an older thread, but it was 2 years old. I figured I would start a new one.Is the Planet Fitness on Western still a good place to go? Also, does anyone know if they still do the $10/mo. with no contract? I don't mind a start up fee, but the rest of it sounds great. If you know, PM me. I did not see that deal on their website.Aside from that, any recommendations for gyms near campus?

They sent me a letter in the mail on Monday saying friends & family could join for just $5.It went out with today's trash.Sorry.It has been sorta crowded for the last year, but still manageable. I'd still recommend it.[Edited on May 13, 2010 at 7:47 PM. Reason : l]

I go to that planet fitness. It isnt too crowded when i go but that is usually before 5am or around 2 pm. other times i have been though it still isnt completely packed. even at the busiest times i have been i rarely have to wait for a bench or machine and if i do most people are willing to let you work in I have found even offering before i ask. and yes, right now there is some sort of special running. i would go and say your friend sent you but lost the sheet of paper or something. I would give you my coupon thingy but have promised it to another friend. PM if you want my name or something to use there as said "friend"speaking of...time to go to they gym!

What are you looking for in a gym?If you want a gay ass gym, go to pf.

cheap, close to my house, no contract and cardio equipment.

I love all the advertisements for the gyms that say "NO COMMITMENT!"

lacking free weights. the new rapid fitness gyms are nice, and have a lot equipment.

I still haven't figured out why people hate PF so much. It's not like they want you to be as quiet as you would in the library...They just don't want you going "UNGGGGGHGHHHHHHH" every time you move a piece of weight. Lets face it, most of the guys that do that are clowns anyway. And with the rubber coated plates you really have to try to make a bunch of noise with them. It's really not a big deal at all.I really wish they would get rid of some of the weight machines that don't see much use and extend the free weight area all the way to the wall. Another pair of squat racks, more room for non-rack free barbell work, and another pair of bench press stations would be nice, but it is what it is and it's not bad IMO.For $10 a month and a mile from the house I don't see myself canceling anytime soon.[Edited on May 14, 2010 at 10:32 AM. I pay $28 a month for the Y in Hillsborough Street. I like it. Plenty of space, free weights, machines, two squat racks and basketball courts.

+1 for the Y on Hillsborough.

its come back to bite me convenience wise but i paid upfront (250+tax) for 3 years at peak fitness back in the day, those closed so now its o2 fitness and i had to pay an extra $60 to all of them including the closest one to me plus its a buddy package so i can always bring in someone with me (dont usually)so thats 8/month or half that if i were taking advantage of the buddy system, unfortunately its about twice as far as PF

^You didn't like Lifestyle Family Fitness? (or was there not one near you?) We bought all of Peak's memberships...so for no charge you could have just transferred until your PEAK membership was due[Edited on May 14, 2010 at 6:48 PM. Reason : ]

I second the YMCA. It has plenty of free weights and machines to workout with.

^^ i signed up with the peak fitness in Fuquay and that guy decided not to close so what i meant is that I moved back to Raleigh and would have to make the 45 min drive each time i wanted to work out or when it became o2 fitness I was finally able to switch to a closer club under the same contracti went to lifetime and they wouldnt accept my contract from the Fuquay Peak, any other one and it would have transferred and I'd be working out at the one in Cary

I love my Rapid Fitness membership....I got in early and pay 24.99 a month and I can go to any location. There is one downtown, one in N. Raleigh (has a pool), and one on Glenwood. They have tons of classes included (spinning, yoga, etc.) as well as women's only areas. My husband signed up for an MMA class if you are into that.
