Who else just learned that it REQUIRES a case INsensitive file system?

wait, wat?Interesting...http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?p=14908890I love that people in that thread are suggesting reinstalling Mac OS X. I couldn't find a reference to a case-insensitive filesystem being a requirement to install. Did I miss it?I now see that they're including a little NOTE at the end of the system requirements for Mac games, talking about the case-sensitivity issue. Small print, gray text on a black background. Nope, this won't be easy to miss.[Edited on May 13, 2010 at 7:23 AM. Reason : .]

Heh.

The default is case insensitive...why would you do otherwise?
5/13/2010 11:02:34 AM
idk, but you'd have to be a real huge idiot and you'd deserve the headache
5/13/2010 11:03:32 AM
agreed. I don't even know what the advantages are? We do know the disadvantage
5/13/2010 11:05:26 AM
When working with other case sensitive files sytems it is easier to just keep that functionality. Either way, it isn't like my MacBook v1.1 would do too well running Portal anyway!
5/13/2010 1:31:00 PM
a lot of apps break on case sensitive file systems.I recall an issue with Adobe and Office for mac at one point.
5/13/2010 2:02:12 PM
5/13/2010 4:40:37 PM
and this is why we should just keep gaming on windows.
5/13/2010 10:44:17 PM
i got it and d/led Portal for free. I'd have to say it runs like shit on my early '08 MBP. thats a 2.4ghz Core 2 Duo, 4 gigs of ram, and a 8400gtm or something video card.
5/14/2010 12:28:23 AM
plenty of programmers will argue your face off in support of case sensitivity. i'm not saying they're right or wrong... but anyway.the UI seems a little rushed/slow... but it's still cool to see Steam moving to different OS's.. just wish my MBP wasn't on its deathbed. she's had a good run, but 4 years and a lot of abuse takes a toll. not to mention the POS ATI x1600 joke-of-a-graphics-card it has
5/14/2010 12:29:25 AM
That's the same slow ui for all platforms. :p

If anyone runs Torchlight on a MacBook let me know how it performs.
5/14/2010 2:05:17 AM
^^ you're talkin about a not-wonderful gfx card + a game that was just ported to a new OS; i wouldn't expect a whole lot
5/14/2010 10:00:32 AM
steam UI runs just fine on windows, fyi.
5/14/2010 10:04:53 AM
Haven't tried torchlight but portal runs very smoothly on my MBP. By default it set all the graphics to the highest (recommended)

I've been gaming on the Mac for quite some time and haven't had any issues. I mean, it is a laptop so I'm not going to be running at max graphics on a game like crysis (haven't played it) and SC2 requires medium settings. A game like portal or torchlight should be a piece of cake. Steam hasn't brought anything new to the table, there were already games on the Mac. What they did do was bring an easier way to manage and purchase your games which I am all for.
5/14/2010 12:25:07 PM
^^ Torchlight will run on my netbook ASUS 1005HA only 'Netbook' mode, and then it still has performance issues and I exceed every minimum spec by quite a bit.
5/14/2010 12:44:22 PM
It runs on my Mini 10v hackintosh. It doesn't run quite perfectly, but it's well enough to play.
5/14/2010 12:56:56 PM
I have a 2 year old imac running boot camp with windows 7 and it seems steam runs smoother on the windows side. When I am playing portal for instance I see it running smoother on 7 than osx. I will see when the rest of the valve stuff comes out and test it out.

Command + m for windowed mode or in options video choose windowed.
5/15/2010 1:34:54 AM
5/15/2010 8:54:25 AM
haha, forgot about portal needing a two mouse button to play. lawl.
5/15/2010 11:11:34 AM
Apple has been shipping a mouse with right click for like 5 years now...
5/15/2010 11:15:26 AM
^^^ gah that is GENIUS
5/16/2010 1:31:33 AM
^^ and it's still disabled by default.

I'd like to say that Mac finally has something worthwhile on their computers now, but I'll have to see it in action first.
5/16/2010 2:20:14 AM
They've had a lot of worthwhile things for a while now. This is merely one more.Macs will likely never be the computer of choice for most gamers, and that's fine. So long as Mac OS X gets to see a reasonable share of popular games, I think Mac owners will remain happy. And everyone else can just Boot Camp it into Winders.
