Honestly, the best advice anyone ever gave me was : get the mom lots of onesies for baby. I guess it's a typical gift when you think about it but most people try to get the cutesy stuff. I got my bff a ton of onesies and she said it was a lifesaver -- they were the only onesies she got at the shower! :\

Naw, in general I think clothes are the best gift as long as you don't gift a bunch of newborn sizes. Babies burn through clothes like there's no tomorrow.

I'm hoping when we have kids someone will give us some of the cute NCSU stuff they make for babies.

Gift Cards, burp cloths, bibs, rags are awesome. Especially gift cards.

because i live in DC and spent some time working on the Hill, I only give one baby shower gift to my friends.



i have lke 5 copies in my closet and i just send one off whenever a friend has a baby.

Pretty much every couple I've known who has a baby says clothes are one of the most appreciated gifts. I would classify toys as not a good idea for a baby shower.

I usually give clothes that are 3-6mo or 6-9mo. If they have a larger baby, they'll fit immediately. If not, the baby will grow into it. win win.

Maybe we're jaded because all the clothes we got were really nice tiny dresses. I would have appreciated more functional clothing. I did appreciate burp cloths and bibs because they got actual use. And gift cards/money because diapers are a constant cost.

if you're going to buy clothes, buy the 6-9 mo, 9+, etc. they typically get tons of the cute little newborn, 1-3 mo stuff. also, make sure you consider the season and how old the child will be when you buy the clothes. onesies are best according to the pregnant people i've known recently. get long sleeve ones if you're buying for winter use.

EASY - box of diapers from sams/bjs and a box of wipes ( I recommend Luvs).
Onesie's, bibs, white crib sheets, sippy cups, steam sterilizer, books, baby einstein videos, sling, gloves(so baby doesn't scratch face), hats (if born in colder season), nightlight, GIFTCARDS to target, babies r us, stuff for MOM such as a gift card for a pedicure/masssage or maybe some Aveda foot cream, babysitting vouchers, Baby books (I recommend "The Baby Book" by Dr. Sears)

Don't waste money on stuffed animals, diaper warmer, fancy outfits that are too nice to be worn regularily or don't match anything.

Personally I wouldn't buy diapers unless I knew exactly what kind of diapers the parents were planning on using. I'd hate to buy disposables and then find out the parents are planning on using cloth diapers

For anyone planning on buying clothes I highly recommend the Carter's outlet in Morrisville. Last time I bought baby shower gifts there I was able to buy two onesies, a sleep sack, and an everyday outfit for less than $25. A total steal and the parents loved them.

I got about 12 blankets. Blankets will be provided; go for something else. I also got a TON of bibs, and more newborn clothes than I'll be able to use.

I'm one of those who goes for practical gifts--first aid kits, baby grooming, bath stuff. Toys are appreciated for a first kid, at least, and books are always awesome.

Get people items from their registry. The parents know what they need or would like to have.

Most people buy clothes and cute items that you don't register for. We got a ton of clothes and he ended up being unable to wear a lot of them- or only wore them one time. We also got several items that we did not register for that were similar to things that we already had because they were passed down to us (like a bouncer and a high chair).
