check out mbguess's post-rock band The White Cascade, they're pretty damn good. Another awesome local is Gray Young.

haha.

I enjoy post-rock and post-metal. After having way too much of it in my library in college I kinda burned myself out on it some but I still enjoy it.

Never heard of Mono in durham or Mono (i'm assuming its just mono but some bands like to have those stupid names) but whenever i want new post rock i just go on What.cd and search mogwai or explosions in the sky and click on one of the million bands branching off.

Same with last.fm if you're not into stealing music illegally with no regard for the law

This thread is post-retarded.

But, Mono rules. I may go to that show in June. Isn't it at a studio or something? How is that going to work?

To the OP: If you're constantly talking to people who don't like instrumental music because of the "lack of lyrics," you're probably running with the wrong crowd. Not to say that everyone should like instrumental music, but if their sole reason for not liking it/not listening to it is "lack of lyrics"...yikes.

I always seem to get post-rock mixed up with prog-rock or post-hardcore.

Mono's NYC live album with Worldess Chorus Orchestra is fucking sick, though.

what the hell is post-rock?

I don't understand all of these goddamn subgenres, least of all the ones that are post-anything.

The new rosetta album is actually really good. Their stuff in the past was ok but didn't stand out from the legion of other post-rock and post-metal bands I have heard or seen. This one has some growing potential for sure. Its called "A Determinism of Morality"

Yeah, I have no idea either. Not sure how to even order the tickets. The lyrics thing is the main complaint but I also think the problem is that most are crazy about indie stuff like Death Cab. Apparently there is going to be some amazing show in the UK in July that is going to have 65daysofstatic, And So I Watch You From Afar, and some other good post-rock bands. If only I had the money.

oh didn't see pelican, they're definitely Post Metal. Haven't really heard rosetta. Russian Circles is supposedly post metal, but they are fucking boring as fuck to me.

When i think post rock i don't think it gets much heavier than Red Sparrowes or Mogwai or God is an Astronaut type stuff.

i can get into a good chunk of it

but after a while i realize that i could just sit by the fire and listen to my hard drive purr while leaving a faucet on ina distant bathroom and get the same psychological effect

all the meanwhile, these actions get to count as a "performance piece" in my own home, thereby earning me personal kudos

I've been into Mogwai for a while. Also the term post-rock is possibly the stupidest fucking misnomer ever.

meh, the term has been around forever. As far as the age-old debate with genre classifying goes: I don't ever get into heated debates over which sub-genre a band belongs in, but I also think that sub-genres do help quickly classify bands on a high level and use them for such.

haha, i doubt you could include drone under the label of post-rock, but i'd like to know if there is anyone around here who listens to Sunn O))) and has seen them live. I for one don't really dig their sound very much but I've heard they are incredibly epic live.

Mogwai's been around for what, 10 years now? I think this style of music is already waning. I was watching this moody documentary from like 2001 the other day with a post-rock soundtrack and kept thinking how dated it felt.

where does Mew fit in the post/prog spectrum? i suppose more towards prog rock since they include lyrics to many of their songs?

mogwai is a pretty big post-rock name but as far as being the end-all be-all of actual music quality I think there are plenty of other bands in the genre that still play appealing music.
