SL thread is dead, and I need to post a question ...So ... I bought SL yesterday, as its required to update my xcode iphone/ipad sdk. However, I am stuck in India for the next 2 weeks ... and was hoping to get it upgraded asap.Anyone know if I actually need the physical disk in hand in order to upgrade my OS? Can I use someone elses disk? Is there a cd key needed? How does all that work (never upgraded a mac before)?

OS X doesn't have a key.You can technically use anyone's disc. It's also technically against Apple's terms. To upgrade, you pop in the disc and run the installer on the disc. As a rule of thumb just like any other OS, it's always best to back up all your stuff and clean installs tend to be smoother.

wow ... so why did I purchase my own copy again?

because it's $29 and you're not a cheapskate?

OK, so in trying to get this loaded on my MAC after purchasing the dvd (but the dvd is shipping to NC, not india)...I downloaded the hotiso files via bittorrent (see this is a proper use of bittorent for all those who may think to say something stupid)...But, I cannot restore it to my thumbdrive, as all I have now is a folder with 60 some files, and a hotiso.nfo and whatever else...How do I turn that folder of files into a dmg, which I could then restore to the formatted thumbdrive?

MacWhat file extension Are these 60 files? .r00 - .rXX?You need to burn the iso to a disc [Edited on May 5, 2010 at 9:10 PM. Reason : .]

yeah ... .rxxI was under the impression that you dont actually need to burn it to a dvd (requires a DL dvd), but that you could somehow convert it to dmg and then restore the dmg to the usb drive ...You sure there is no was to get this thing installed without burning to dvd?Rob

well first the .rXX is the compression format. You need to unpack that before doing anything. I use winrar but thats for windows.

UnRarX will handle those files on OSX.You can just double click on an .iso file and it will mount and open the "disc". Even if it's on a external or networked drive. It might take an actual burned copy or some other magic in order to be able to boot from it though if it's OS install disc.]

eh, you might be able to copy all the files to the root dir of a flash drive and get it to work somehow. But that's where the aforementioned "magic" would come into play.

Oh, oh, it's MAgiC ...

yes, yes it is Used unrarx (thanks), and it created one dmg file.Restoring that now to the flash drive, and hopefully will be able to install from there without a DL dvd burned.
