trying to replace heads i have the fsm but there seems to be quite a few things that require a little bit of experience i.e. it doesn't tell the only way to access the exhaust manifold bolts is to remove the battery tray. i would love to have a second set of experienced hands on it i don't have much $ but i can pay for your gas and maybe pay you in beer, random electronics, 4.7 parts or help you with your car/home audio system?if anyone is interested please pm me. for reference here's a pic showing how far i am already and i would love to have it back on the road in the next couple weeks. the vehicle is a '99 jeep grand Cherokeethanks in advance guys

anybody know of a shade tree that won't charge me and arm and a leg to come out and help me finish this up?

As a last resort, you can find plenty of shade-tree mechanics on craigslist.

I can help you, but it would probably be Wednesday or later before I could get to it.[Edited on May 16, 2010 at 12:43 PM. Reason : I've never worked on that particular engine though. I'm not really a chrysler fan.]

It could be worse. You could have the Ford 4.0L SOHC with rear-mounted timing chains. Requires a $300 set of tools to set the timing. I had the opportunity to rebuild one recently and politely declined.

Leaky injector hydrolocked it, lost compression on one cylinder. Interesting engine though, made in Germany.[Edited on May 17, 2010 at 5:17 PM. Reason : .]

4.0L SOHCCurrently the only version of the Cologne engine still in production, the SOHC version was introduced in 1997 in the Ford Explorer, alongside the original pushrod version. It features a variable length intake manifold and produces 210 hp (157 kW) and 245 lb·ft (332 N·m)f. It uses a jackshaft in place of a camshaft to drive a timing chain to each cylinder head. Three timing chains are used, one from the crank to the jackshaft, one in the front of the engine to drive the cam for the left bank, and one on the back of the engine to drive the cam for the right bank. Ford Power Products sells this engine as the SOHC-640.[2]A version of the engine is used in the Land Rover LR3 in Australia and Canada, producing 216 hp (161 kW) and 269 lb·ft (365 N·m) of torque at 3000 rpm. The Land Rover version of the engine became unavailable in the United States for the 2008 model year.[3]Applications: * 2001–present Ford Ranger * 2001–2009 Mazda B-Series * 1997–2010 Ford Explorer/Mercury Mountaineer * 2005–2010 Ford Mustang * 2005–2009 Land Rover LR3
