Couldn't find the thread if there was one...but I am not surprised by this hands on review...http://www.engadget.com/2010/04/19/hp-slate-leaks-its-way-into-the-wild-meh/

I had hoped this thing would be more, but wasn't really expecting it.I don't want a netbook with no keyboard (which this looks to be) and I certainly don't want a big ass ipod, so I'll wait another few years on tablet technology.
4/19/2010 4:09:40 PM
yea, we already have touchscreen netbook tablets w/ keyboards for <$500this just reinforces that the Notion Ink is really the only tablet out there that will stand a chance against the iPad... that is IF this kind of device catches on.
4/19/2010 4:11:44 PM
^from iPad sales, I'd say the iPad has done well to catch on.That doesn't speak towards other tablets with completely different user interactions.

Actual "review" for our Spanish speaking audience is here: http://conecti.ca/2010/04/15/mini-review%E2%84%A2-hp-slate-pc-ipad-no-tiembla-ni-de-frio/comment-page-1/The verdict seems to be that it's a netbook without a keyboard and, as such, has all the drawbacks that that implies.
4/19/2010 4:39:40 PM
^^It's been out 2 weeks.... Yes, I concur it has exceeded all expectations for immediate sales, but there has also been a lot of reviews of people who bought one and don't use it regularly or have returned it, so time will tell, I think it's a bit early. I am agreeing with you though, so far for 2 weeks it's done well, but you made a good point, it's Apple, and existing platforms with such a reputable brand can be distinguishing factors from other slates. Thus kind of why I think the only slate that stands a chance is the Notion Ink Adam because it is using the successful Android marketplace and has a feature set well beyond that of the iPad, some emerging technologies, but we'll just see if people will buy a device that's from a no-name.Another big question I have is why they opted for Windows 7 HP and not Windows 7 Started Ed. like some other netbooks did. It seems like if they don't have the hardware to support HP they should be running Starter Ed... but I'm not too in touch with what features are cut in SE[Edited on April 19, 2010 at 5:12 PM. I think it just represents the few that didn't know what the heck it was, had it ordered online and just expected gold because it was made by Apple and didn't do their research on what the heck a slate was supposed to do and what it's not supposed to do.[Edited on April 19, 2010 at 5:27 PM. I knew that was the one quote you were going to pull from the articles.
4/19/2010 5:28:13 PM
why is that? I've only read most of the first article.
4/19/2010 5:28:59 PM
i'm stoked about the adami might actually get a tablet in the relatively near feature if it's as awesome as it's supposed to be
4/20/2010 9:16:56 AM
microsoft courier needs to get a move on
4/20/2010 9:24:11 AM
All these idiots dumb enough to buy an ipad without understanding what it is deserve to get screwed on returns.
4/20/2010 9:31:58 AM
^ I can sorta agree with that. No one should take for granted that the next big product from X company is something they need to have, not without putting some thought into the purchase first.
4/20/2010 9:38:32 AM
i wonder how many of the same people buy a 3g version and return it again when they realize its the same thing, only more expensive.

4/20/2010 10:11:24 AM
^huh? No Iphone OS device can multitasking without a jailbreak until summer for iPhone/iPod Touch and fall for iPad. The iPad can't now because the jailbreak hasn't been released yet. Not sure what your gripe is about.

Yes I read that in the original post.
4/20/2010 3:51:16 PM
my point is i have an 18 month old iPhone that can do a particular thing that i like, and a brand new iPad that can't, and it is frustratingwhat i mean by "can but won't" is that clearly it's not a hardware limitationanyway, i like it overall, i'm not returning the damn thing and it's probably going to be the industry leader for a long time if these dell and hp slates are the competitors[Edited on April 20, 2010 at 4:00 PM. ah, but the iPhone is personal while the iPad is a "work iPad" ( ) so no jailbreaking for meoh well, first world problems[Edited on April 20, 2010 at 4:11 PM. Reason : stupid crazycode]
4/20/2010 4:10:54 PM
Why do you have a work iPad? Just curious if its for functional use or if you are a developer for the platform.I use mine for work all the time and love it but they didn't buy it for me
4/20/2010 4:12:46 PM
basically to pilot it for more widespread use
4/20/2010 4:17:32 PM
oh nice. Do you get a lot of positive comments or do you work in a tech/nerd field? I get mostly positive remarks at work except from the other developers on my team. They like the concept but don't like it because its apple
4/20/2010 4:19:45 PM
i try to hide it as much as possible because i don't want to be "the guy with the ipad"i took it to cup-a-joe on hillsborough the day i got it and a guy walked past and said "is that an iPad?" i said yes, and told him i'd just gotten it and that it seemed pretty cool, and then he just stood about 5 feet from my shoulder, staring at it, for maybe 45 secondsso now i hide it in a magazine when i go out

4/30/2010 9:46:31 AM
So glad they realized that Windows 7 as a tablet OS is a huge waste of money and total shit. Now HP has another shot at making an iPad competitor with a proper mobile touch OS (webOS)^I wouldn't quite say 'waving the white flag' just yet. I see this as they're finally waking up and realizing that the OS should be designed from the ground up for touch. Windows 7 just isn't it.[Edited on April 30, 2010 at 9:51 AM. Reason : .]
4/30/2010 9:50:01 AM
i don't see HP making anything compelling with WebOS in a timeframe that won't give Apple a huge headstart
4/30/2010 9:55:48 AM
Probably not but there is always room for competition. The iPhone had a huge head start on Android and Android is doing pretty well. Not the market share of the iPhone but its growing.
4/30/2010 9:59:11 AM
as a platform, the android will probably do well in the tablet market. but the brand won't have the sex appeal of the ipad, and the android market will be segmented across dozens of devices. ipad will remain the dominant force
4/30/2010 10:02:22 AM
I agree, I do not doubt the iPad dominance.
4/30/2010 10:07:06 AM
tablet for home use is still worthless. Apple only sells them on their brand name. Eventually the ipad will go the way of the macbook air where the only people excited about it are apple fanbois. Everyone else who gets suckered into buying one will realize their mistake and either return it or try to force it into their lives, only to find their existing devices are better. At which point it will sit on a shelf somewhere collecting dust.
4/30/2010 10:24:06 AM
lol...someone hasn't used an iPad ITT
4/30/2010 10:32:03 AM
yea yea thats what they said about the macbook air too.
4/30/2010 10:32:53 AM
The Macbook Air is just a smaller, lighter, more expensive overpriced laptop. It does nothing different in terms of presentation or user experience that my MBP or MB doesn't do...except that it fits in a manila envelope /care, and has inferior hardware. Its basically a $1800 netbook. If it wasn't for netbooks price point, they too, would join the ranks of a Macbook Air.[Edited on April 30, 2010 at 10:37 AM. Reason : .]
4/30/2010 10:36:31 AM
if the ipad drops to ~200 for the most expensive model then maybe they'll be worth a look, but its just doesn't fill enough of a role to be useful at $500+
4/30/2010 10:40:43 AM
Again, use the device and see for yourself. Sure its not perfect but the experience is not the same as a laptop/netbook You are applying the same logic that you admittedly applied to the Macbook Air.A jump from a MBP/laptop -> Macbook Air/Netbook != Laptop/netbook -> iPad/TabletI won't argue that it could be cheaper. Paying less is always a good thing. But at $500 its still a decent price and worth it.[Edited on April 30, 2010 at 10:45 AM. Reason : .]

laptops function as mobile computers. Netbooks are supposed to be more mobile laptops but they suck because they're underpowered and anywhere you'd actually use a netbook you can use a standard laptop anyway. Smartphones function as phones with access to simple and frequent tasks that you would normally need a computer for. Things like checking calendars, email, web surfing, etc... Tablets are supposed to be somewhere between the two form factors, but then end up suffering the same fate as netbooks (and the macbookair). Laptops are more functional and can be found in the same settings as a tablet. Smartphones are far more mobile and just as functional. The only place where a tablet stands apart from these two is as an e-reader. The laptop is too bulky for casual reading, and the smartphone's screen is too small. So if you're looking for an ereader the ipad might be a good choice for you. For people who already have laptops and iphones who dont care about ebooks its not worth the money.
