Planning on buying one in a couple of weeks

yeah, i find video capture on every DSLR i've seen so far to be unacceptable for one reason or anotheri mean, if you were going to purchase it anyway (or purchase something in the same price range) and one option has video while the other does not, then by all means, go for the unit with videobut using a DSLR as your primary video camera (given current quality and glitches) just seems pointless

lenses are where it's at with SLRs anyway.and if you leave it on auto all the time, you ought not pick one up.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W0jaBzleS5MThis was all handheld which proved to be quite difficult with telephoto shooting. Very nice picture, sound uses AGC (Auto gain control) which makes any real audio pretty unusable and you can see some rolling shutter issues. On a tripod, the picture quality is fantastic!

+ 1 for quagmires post

DSLR for any kind of planned creative shooting, video camera of recording your everyday moments on the go. I guess same as with still photography, DSLR vs point-and shoot. There are defenitely shortcomings to T2i video, but at this point nothing is show-stopping. Hand-held shooting w/telephot is a definite no-no^^. Maybe with a wide angle or normal lens it will be semi-acceptable. Rolling shutter is much less of an issue on tripod. Audio issue is annoying as well, but even with the AGC, it is very acceptable after plugging in an external mic.I got t2i on the way as well and will be directing my own wedding shoot pretty soon here (in conjunction with a friend's 5d). I will try to remember to p0ast the results.

Where are yall buying this camera from? Everywhere I check is out of stock.
4/8/2010 10:10:30 PM
I think Adorama had them in stock as of Wednesday or so. I've been thinking of upgrading and keep comparing it to the 50D. It was either there, bhphoto, or amazon. There's a couple floating around ebay too right now.
4/8/2010 11:54:34 PM
It depends on how much you want the video from the T2i.The 50D has different pros and cons and is tailored to a slightly different audience than the T2i. I went from an XTi to a 50D and couldn't be happier with the additional options and versatility. I don't know enough about the T2i to see how it compares. Also, Adorama has them in stock as of this morning. It's a kit...but doesn't come with a lens. nevermind, gone now.Amazon has it, body only with other crap for 980. And if you're not buying the camera because it's body only without the kit lens, you're missing the point. You can get the camera and the 50mm f/1.8 (for about 100 bucks) and you have a fairly decent package. You'll want wider lens or longer lens eventually, but this would work for now. And work well. ^ yeah, right now I'm more at a point where I WANT the 50d. It just feels 10x better in my hands. The T2i has everything that I would reasonably need (one of my biggest interests right now is better higher ISO performance). So far I've only read one review on the t2i fully and it compared it's image quality to the 7D which I find a bit far fetched. If so though, it's more than enough. Too bad it still feels so cheap.
4/9/2010 4:48:15 PM
the more reviews i read the more I lean toward the 50d vs. the t2i. I just can't make up my mind.
4/9/2010 10:29:44 PM
The body you get really is irrelevant. People still take great photos with Rebel XTs. You just get more versatility as you move from one to the other.I've seen nothing but good reviews on the T2i. It all depends on if you want the video or not...seems to be the biggest difference (plus the same sensor as the 7D). The Rebels are easier to learn on, IMO. Unfortunately, things get super expensive because of the glass.[Edited on April 9, 2010 at 10:56 PM. Reason : ]
4/9/2010 10:54:30 PM
I have a friend I can borrow the glass from, lol...I plan on stopping by a camera store and play around with the 50d and a the t1i(i dont think anyone has the t2i on display yet around here). I just want to see how the difference in size feels. I have big hands and fat fingers so I do not want the t2i to be difficult to use or hold.
4/10/2010 9:20:27 AM
^^ I don't know that I'd choose the word "irrelevant". I agree that it's of much lower importance than the glass you choose but there's definite advantages with nicer bodies starting with things as simple as ergonomics (for Canon at least) & build quality. People still use CS2, Win XP, PowerPC Macs, etc. as well but that doesn't mean that there's not (potentially major) advantages to upgrading for people that actually use everything that their body is capable of already.^ Best Buy has them on display and in stock locally. I completely forgot about that a few posts up when someone asked where to find them. There's no real camera shops around here so I went up there to check out the 50D last weekend and they had the t2i too. I can't quite place it but the t2i feels slightly different than the t1i to me. I'm not sure if it's just a result of the new button design or if they made a slight change in the body somewhere though (or maybe just me).
4/10/2010 10:34:46 AM
Thanks for the info, heading to bestbuy now to play with both. I am also assuming there is no point in buying one of these at best buy. I would save a lot of money by buying online correct?
4/10/2010 11:09:50 AM
yes
4/10/2010 11:10:59 AM
Actually, if you decide on the t2i, you won't save much money online. It's popular enough that it's hard to find and prices seem to be pretty set at $899.99 & higher (for the kit, BB doesn't carry body only in-store). BB has it for $899.99 so other than tax, there won't be a difference and that may be offset by shipping. The 50D is quite a bit higher at BB than I've seen online with sales that you can find (watch the forums on slickdeals.net or fatwallet).

I think I've decided on a Nikon D5000 instead. 1080p vs 720p video isn't really a big selling point for me since video is really an afterthought for what I plan to use this for and in comparing stills the D5000 takes as good, if not better, photos for $200 less.
4/12/2010 12:51:31 PM
Keep in mind that the D5000 doesn't have a focus motor so you're limited to using the new lenses only if you want to keep Autofocus. You'll have to move up to the D90 if you want the ability to use older lenses. I think you might be stretching just a bit though about the IQ. I don't recall the D5000 coming out on top against the T1i and the T2i is supposedly putting out even better images.
4/12/2010 1:35:55 PM
The Canon vs. Nikon argument. It's a wonderful thing.
4/12/2010 2:23:12 PM
^lol. Personally, I like most results out of Nikon (if he'd said D90, I prob. would have agreed) but I don't think the t2i and the d5000 just aren't really comparable cameras.
4/12/2010 2:36:46 PM
Yep. Really, that argument for me comes down to which one I navigate easiest. I don't know what I'd compare the D5000 with from Canon. Maybe the T1i?I don't know that much about different camera bodies. I just know I don't have enough money to buy what I want ... which is the annoying part of photography. Dammit.
4/12/2010 2:53:41 PM
To me, the D5000 seems to be kind of split between an XSi & T1i. I agree about the cost part. I finally quit modding my cars. I quit messing around with car & home audio. I'd like a cheap hobby for once. Unfortunately, I picked photography back up and it's probably even worse than the other two.
4/12/2010 3:43:12 PM
Don't forget about Peace Camera and Southeastern Camera (they both used to be the same store) for local camera shops, they carry the T2i too...The D5000 suffers from far greater rolling shutter than the T2i, not to mention the high ISO and manual controls the T2i offers. I have grown up with Nikon and this is my first Canon SLR. It hurt to change, but its better than what Nikon has to offer in the same price class. The D90 is a tank, but I need the video functionality too, so I had to go with the T2i....
4/12/2010 11:26:10 PM
I got my T2i at Tigerdirect (err... CompUSA). They had plenty of them in stock. Actually got mine a few days early .
