i feel like i should be able to figure this out but i don't know what to do, so here we go...i have a dsl modem connected to a regular wifi router. i also have a belkin wireless gaming adapter that i share w/ the ps3 and dish network box. by share, i mean i go and unplug one and plug in the other. this sucks. i want to just hook them both to something and not have to touch it. the problem, i think, is that the dish needs a dummy connection b/c you can't configure anything on its end.i didn't know the difference b/w a switch, bridge, etc. looks like a switch shares the connection and the 2 devices can interfere w/ each other. a bridge will separate them out. is this correct?what do i need to buy? if i buy a bridge or switch, do i still need the gaming adapter? i feel dumb

The PS3 has wireless built in. Just connect your PS3 via WiFi without the adapter and use the wireless NIC you do have for the dish box.

get a router you can flash dd-wrt to, then http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Bridging

no, i forgot to mention that. my ps3 is the original 20gb first gen one. it doesn't not have wifi.

In my opinion, the simplest and cheapest solution is to buy a second wireless NIC.

^that won't work with the dish box. will it w/ the ps3?i still need a device that i can physically plug both the ps3 and the dish box into. the router has to be in the other room w/ the phone line & modem.[Edited on March 30, 2010 at 11:01 AM. Reason : ]

^ You gaming adapter is just a wireless NIC (not exactly, but that's semantics). It works for both devices. It seems your only current problem is not having 2 of them, thus creating the need to move it between devices. Get a second one and both devices can have their own. No more switching required.

ohhh. okay! when i typed wireless nic in google, i got pictures of those little usb dongle ones. thank you!

1)get a second router instead of a gaming adapter. 2)use it as an access point rather than a router. 3)???4)profit.

unless i can just plug the dish box into it and not configure a thing, then it won't work. is that possible? my network is secure and requires a passwordi guess i can use both, but i initially thought you meant i could plug both into it. i'd really like to have just one device, but i guess this might not be possible.[Edited on March 31, 2010 at 8:19 AM. some of the worst advice ever in this thread since people are using the wrong names for stuff. your belkin game adapter is actually just a wireless bridge. some of these devices support switches behind them, some only support hubs. you can either buy another wireless bridge (game adapter) or for roughly the same amount or less, you can buy a wireless router that can be used as a bridge and then plug both devices into it. any router that can be flashed with dd-wrt or tomato will do the job nicely.

okay, i bid on another gaming adapter on ebay. it's $2.75 right now w/ 1 day left what would be the cheapest router option?

check slickdeals, there are dd-wrt router deals all the time.
