Wondering if anyone on TWW is a freemason. My grandfather is big into it and has won many awards. He has told me some things about it, but not much. I am interested in joining to get involved in some local charities and things and also to become part of a pretty extensive network, which is always beneficial down the road. Any thoughts or opinions from members or non-members?

3/30/2010 1:05:15 AM
I'm a mason.
3/30/2010 1:46:37 AM
I'm not a freemason, but I'd also like to join. I've heard it described from a member as cub scouts for adults.
3/30/2010 2:35:09 AM
They are said to be politically motivated carpetbaggers in Mexico and often wear cylindrical hats with tassles all over them. Mark Twain was a freemason, and he was held in the highest regards when he spoke of tobacco.
3/30/2010 2:41:05 AM
For a short time, I was in demolay, which is kind of like the cub scouts of the freemasons. There is a female equivalent and generally we'd just have parties with the two halves together. It was kinda interesting and kinda creepy because I would have to go to the "temple."Weird experience, but kinda fun.I still remember the secret handshake.
3/30/2010 2:44:07 AM
I too have thought about masonry.
3/30/2010 3:17:40 AM

3/30/2010 4:49:26 AM
I too, was in a frat.
3/30/2010 7:06:24 AM
My brother up in Raleigh joined one. Think some of the guys in his Fire/EMS group were in it. I have thought about it, but in BFE the only guys in it are my grandfathers age. I would probably be the youngest guy there by 30 years.
3/30/2010 8:31:41 AM
I think it'd be cool to be a freemason.
3/30/2010 8:45:55 AM

3/30/2010 10:31:58 AM

laughs aside, my dad is a freemason as well as some of the other ones like shriner and knights templar and stuff. He told me that to become a freemason you have to be invited by a freemason, so u can ask your grandfather or if you know someone, they can get you in. All truths aside it's not very hard and i think annual dues (at least hwere my dad lives) was like $7/yrThey do a lot of fund raising and charity work and everyone in there is christian and good people. Mostly just a frat for guys to hang out and stuff.and whenever someone prays, at the end of the prayer when we all say 'amen' my dad says 'so mote it be'. It's a mason thing. I have no clue.

u just have to be deist
3/30/2010 12:45:07 PM
still on the fence...
3/30/2010 12:47:21 PM
I think in order to be a Mason at the very least you have to state a religion (doesn't matter as long as you believe in a higher being) and have proof of a place of worship, and be recommended by another mason. If that's true 99% of TWWers don't qualify. I have a few Mason's/Shirners in my family, like 33rd degree (or whatever the higher is). [Edited on March 30, 2010 at 12:52 PM. Reason : /]

ALMOST^You just have to believe in a higher, monotheistic being, and be well recommended by another mason, who will bring you around and introduce you to others so they can get to know you as well. Place of worship isnt necessarily a req. There are those who practice Judaism and Islam in my Lodge in Raleigh as well as Christians. Discussion of religion and politics is forbidden in a Lodge meeting. ^^^Deist is included too, think George Washington. One of the best decisions I've ever made while in college. There are plenty of student masons on campus and the age distribution is pretty even. You'll obviously have more younger folks in metropolitan areas, especially those with higher learning institutions in them like Raleigh.
3/30/2010 1:08:38 PM
does believing in the supremacy of one's own consciousness count? uber-meinsch and all that...
3/30/2010 1:11:53 PM
No, we do this so that you may place your hand upon a sacred volume of law (bible, koran, torah, etc) and be held accountable by that god over yourself when you take an oath.
3/30/2010 1:27:55 PM
well... that's what I mean, I would be accountable to myself.I don't see the practical difference between esteeming myself vs. esteeming an imagination that I create.
3/30/2010 1:31:20 PM
^this question is also applicable to some eastern religions, as well.
