Someone in the Soap Box will defend this.
3/11/2010 4:36:54 PM
I love lesbians.
3/11/2010 4:45:10 PM
^^Not me.
3/11/2010 4:48:00 PM
They did the right thing.1. they didn't discriminate2. they are putting education first instead of fostering a media circus.nip the issue in the bud. Screw everybody.
3/11/2010 4:49:02 PM
I see their reasoning. It would be a slight conundrum if a lesbian won title of "Prom King".

Is this chick legal age yet?
3/11/2010 5:20:13 PM
What percentage of the senior girls will go on to college and make out with another drunk girl after some coaxing at a party?
3/11/2010 5:23:56 PM
there was also a private school in colorado i believe that kicked a kid out of school because they were the child of a lesbian couple
3/11/2010 5:25:47 PM
^http://abcnews.go.com/WN/colorado-catholic-school-kicks-student-lesbian-mothers/story?id=10043528&page=2I assumed that it was in a more conservative part of Colorado. Surprisingly it was in Boulder, which is pinko commie capitol of the state.

Help me understand this. She told the school she was going with a girl and wearing a tux. The school says no. She calls the ACLU and they go to court. The school cancels the prom for everyone. that about right? While it sucks for her, I feel worse for the rest of the students. Just show up alone and have your GF do the same.
3/11/2010 5:54:11 PM
^ sounds a lot like"just drink from the other water fountain. warm water won't hurt you"
3/11/2010 5:59:05 PM
I would go to the prom with three different 'sister wife' dates just to see what they would do.
3/11/2010 6:12:06 PM
but this just sounds like them making such a huge fucking deal out of being gay or lesbian. just stfu and go to the prom and just dont say anything. yay. waaaaahhmublance for everybody
3/11/2010 6:13:30 PM
I think the reason they cancelled the prom is basically because they didn't want to get sued, and they didn't want to fight in court. They may have still thought their stance was right, but didn't have the funds or inclination to test it in court.I don't agree with the school system perspective, but this may also be an issue that is better dealt with over the course of several months of discussion and mediation, instead of forcing both sides to work it out and be happy in the deadline leading up to prom. This solution, while not ideal, may end up being better in the long run for all sides, because it gives them more time to find common ground.(And I think we all know that this would have been the BEST PROM EVER! If my prom had lesbians, I probably would have remembered it much more fondly.)[Edited on March 11, 2010 at 6:28 PM. Reason : edit]

The girls were trying to make a statement and the school did exactly what they wanted them to do.Also, their mastery of using ironic clothing to make a statement at such a young age is sure to win them points when they're unemplyed hipsters in a few years.
3/11/2010 6:34:10 PM
^^that worked brilliantly...http://www.cnn.com/2010/LIVING/03/11/mississippi.prom.suit/index.html?eref=igoogle_cnn

Here is the memo the school circulated:
3/11/2010 6:50:59 PM
Wow. What a dumb school.I mean, the 16/17 year old girls can bring their 22 year old boyfriend (who we all know is going to slam their pussy after or during the prom), and a girl or boy cannot bring a member of the same sex with them? That is fucking stupid. What does the school care if a girl brings her girlfriend or a guy brings his boyfriend? If it bothers you that much, don't look at them. If you're going to let them bother your night, then it's YOU who has the issue, not them. What is the school afraid of? A homophobic father/mother not allowing their "darling" little whore go to the prom with their 22 year old boyfriend? It seems to me that the school needs to get their priorities straight.
3/11/2010 7:07:14 PM
mississippi is full of homophobic bible thumping bigots? no way

Maybe they could've had a "separate but equal" prom in another room... you know, out back somewhere.
3/11/2010 8:54:14 PM
3/11/2010 9:17:49 PM
The ALCU should also sue the students and force them to attend the prom anyway. If the kids don't show, then sue their parents too
3/12/2010 11:19:44 AM
Proms are a waste of money. I support this and don't think it goes far enough.
3/12/2010 11:21:43 AM
3/12/2010 11:41:14 AM
^ yup that's the key part.i had a friend in grade school whose parents got divorced and she was politely pushed out of the schoolkinda fucked up

For the Mississippi high school I read that the school board is encouraging members of the community to organize a private prom so that they can exclude the gay couple with no legal worries. In response there is now an effort to raise money for a gay inclusive prom. Unfortunately this seems to be a growing trend of gay people having to have separate proms.Growing up in rural NC, long before I was out of the closest, when there were few openly gay people at my high school, I was friends with all kinds of closed-minded people to put it lightly. One day I was even invited in on the plans of a group of guys who were getting together to plan an attack/stabbing on one gay guy if he did end up bringing a date to prom.http://www.nytimes.com/2009/05/24/magazine/24prom-t.html?_r=1
3/12/2010 12:11:23 PM
^^^ I caught that. I was still surprised.
3/12/2010 12:33:45 PM
I agree with cynosural that they did the right thing. Obviously, the especially right thing to do is not to have a policy at all.But if an ultraconservative administration has put the policy in place, schools should cancel the prom every year.Just say, "Sorry, folks, we can't have a prom because our prom policy is discriminatory, and we don't want to risk a lawsuit and media circus. The only way we can ever have a prom again is if we change the policy."If people want to organize a private prom, that's their business. They best not be thinking they gonna sell tickets and promote that shit on campus.

That's pretty bad. You have to wonder what kind of conversations went on between the kid and his parents that resulted in them kicking him out. They'd have to be shitty parents to not support him through this.[Edited on March 26, 2010 at 2:44 AM. Reason : ]

I bet every other girl at that school is going to want to kick her ass.
3/26/2010 2:54:49 AM
^^no they dont, if you had kids that wanted to take a horse to the prom would you support them?
3/26/2010 2:57:35 AM
3/26/2010 3:00:59 AM
Well, one more reason for me to not like Mississippi or private fucking schools.
3/26/2010 3:08:24 AM
Any parent that kicks their child out of their own house for being gay deserves scorn and public shaming. No system of values can be used to provide cover to parents that would go out of their way to harm their child during their upbringing.
3/26/2010 12:47:07 PM
^^^I wonder what school that was. My sister went to a private school here in Raleigh and was kicked out for chewing gum, and another was kicked out because she buzzed the underside of her hair (it was too poofy for her). I'd hate to see the reaction to a gay kid.
3/26/2010 12:51:59 PM
seriously, supplanter, that's already been fucking talked about. you are the king of dragging the same fucking quote and story in to 15 fucking threads

kicking your child out of the house basically says that you don't accept their choices, and aren't going to. in some cases i can see that as being the right option, but with something like this, it just tells the world that you are a bigot.it sucks, but i'm sure the kid is better off outside of a home environment that is negative towards his sexual perspective.

it was set up by the parents.its actually kind of funny in a way... you know, if nobody's feelings were involved.

I hope these kids look back on what they and their parents did with shame in a few years when they are a little more grown up.[Edited on April 6, 2010 at 1:54 PM. Reason : l]

Now I know this thread is all about the 'rabble, rabble, society is bad', but might you maybe consider that the other students did not exclude her from the private prom because of her lifestyle choices?Perhaps it was because her little tirade got their original prom canceled. Or that she took the last group of people trying to organize a prom to court.Just saying. Getting your school prom cancelled is effectively a social kamikaze.
4/6/2010 2:32:01 PM
this thread is full of sad. hard to believe some elements of our society are still so fucking backwards
