I'm looking to get a 1993 Ford Lightning with only 56k miles on it. Amazing condition with no mechanical or cosmetic issues at all. I haven't read of any issues with this type of truck.Any reason I shouldn't get it?Edit: Yes I know I screwed up the title.[Edited on March 8, 2010 at 6:29 PM. Reason : fucked up the title....FORD LIGHTNING]

The only reason I know of is that damned E4OD tranny for that particular year can be somewhat troublesome.I had a friend who had a '93...and the transmission shit the bed in Tennessee. Had to have it towed all the way back to Clayton.I had a '93 work van with the E4OD...and that bastard used to drop right out of gear every now and then going down the highway...and then catch with a THUD that would snap your neck.

3/10/2010 3:34:55 PM
don't these things have shitty towing capacity?
3/10/2010 3:37:32 PM
they have shitty everything, it's a damn 90's f150. useful for collector/limited edition status only.
3/10/2010 5:43:35 PM
As if a 90's F150 is such a terrible thing. I guess that's why it has consistently been the best selling pickup truck in America. And Ford put a lot into making this truck outhandle pretty much any truck built before it. While it might be a little dated now it was way ahead of it's time in 1993. It's not just an F-150 with a plastic trim package and 17s.

Seems like it would be easier to make a lighter, shorter wheelbase AWD vehicle handle than a RWD full-size pickup, Just sayin', I could be wrong.
3/19/2010 11:55:38 PM
^so jeeps can out handle miatas?the GMC Syclone begs to differ.think full size here bro. the 454 wasnt shit for this motherfucker. in every aspect, and the v10 ram could only pull boats
3/20/2010 4:00:19 AM
3/20/2010 12:12:39 PM
^^Yes, because a Miata is sooo much like a full-size truck. We're talking about two truck-based vehicles here, neither one is a damn sports car. I think my question is still valid.
3/20/2010 1:42:08 PM
I will solve this dispute I have my Car and Driver collection test drives of both vehicles.Stand by...

Okay, this is what I found:GMC Syclone (C/D Sept 1991)MSRP: $25,970280hp / 350lb-ft0-60 - 5.31/4 mile - 14.1 @ 93mphbraking 70-0 - 183 ftskidpad - 0.80curb weight - 3600lbsFord Lightning (C/D July 1993)MSRP: $19,523240hp / 340lb-ft0-60 - 7.21/4 mile - 15.8 @ 86mphbraking - 184 ftskidpad - 0.90 glane change maneuver 55.3 mphcurb weight - 4480lbsAs we already knew, the Syclone smokes the Lightning in a straight line. Looks like the Lightning has more grip however given it weighs almost 900 lbs more I doubt it's as maneuverable as the Syclone. Of significance is the Syclone's considerably more expensive base price... Quite interesting that the Syclone smoked the Ferrari 348 it was compared against in everything except skidpad grip, 0-120 mph, and top speed. It even beat the Ferrari in braking
