As some of you are already aware, on Tuesday February 16, 2010, 3 cars were parked in the brickyard on NCSU campus. These cars consisted of a blue 350Z, an orange SRT-4, and a silver-blue Scion tC. Next to these cars was a sign that read, "NSCU DRAG STRIP CLUB."

First impression.

I chatted real quick with 2 of the 3 "gentlemen." Meh came to mind...

Now I will say I was somewhat impressed with a turbocharged tC. The owner showed me his dyno graph. According to that piece of paper, that tC was putting 297hp to the front wheels. Kinda pissed me off a little because it's a goddamn Scion, but at least it's making that much power using the same engine from the manufacturer, which is something I can't say about my Porsche. But that's okay. The term RICERS definitely stuck out here, both in appearance and in attitude.

With that said, here's some more/additional info:

"Hello, and thank you for showing interest in the Wolfpack Drag Strip Club!
If you would like to officially join, please sign up on OrgSync for the
school's and our records: http://www.orgsync.com ,after logging in click “Join an
Org” near the top left and search for “WDSC”.

Here is some quick info about our club:

Officers:
President-Russell Buchanan (ncstateredline- forum name)
Vice President- Matt Shoaf (luv2BBlown-forum name)
Treasurer- Ryan Moore (NCSUsrt4-forum name)
Secretary- Ryan Benfield (NCSUSI- forum name)

Our goal: To meet and connect with fellow car enthusiasts at NC State while
promoting a safer and legal alternative to street racing: drag racing at
local tracks.

What we do: Other than the club racing at nearby drag strips (Rockingham and
Fayetteville); we also autocross, go to car shows, work on cars, have dyno
days, go to karting events, cook out etc. You are not required to race your
car to be part of our club, there are many other events and outings you can
join us for. We would like to hear what you're interested in as well in
order to further expand our club interests.

Contact:
-You can e-mail us here (wolfpackdsc@gmail.com), and will receive e-mails
prior to upcoming events
-facebook:
http://www.facebook.com/home.php#/group.php?gid=263016875202&ref=ts

-forum: http://www.wolfpackscc.com we share this forum with our sister club, the
Wolfpack Student Car Club (generally they focus on events other than drag
racing). It is free to join, and is encouraged because most club discussion
happens here in place of weekly or monthly meetings.

About drag racing: We only participate in legal competitive driving and for
the drag events this takes place at either Rockingham Dragway or
Fayetteville Dragway “test n tunes”. We generally caravan as a group to the
track and it is $10 to watch/ another $10 to run at both locations.
Generally we have five or more hours to watch and run our cars as much as we
want, more than enough to make it worth the cost.

Safety concerns: If you are new to the sport we are glad to introduce
beginners and will help walk you through/ ride and advise. Drag racing is
the safest way to enjoy your car to the fullest. You are in control for the
entirety of the race, with no needed extra safety equipment besides the seat
belt. Having autocrossed as well, I can tell you from personal experience
this type of racing is much less strenuous on your car. Please be sure it is
in good mechanical order before racing as well as clearing out any loose
objects in the cabin.

First racing of the semester: THIS Saturday, the 20th, at Rockingham
Dragway. We will meet at the food lion parking lot on Western Blvd at 10 am
and leave at 10:30. Racing starts as soon as the track is prepped (soon
after we arrive) and ends at sunset. Again it is $10 dollars to watch and
another $10 to run. Use this address for the drag strip: L G Dewitt Rd,
Marston, Richmond, North Carolina 28363. The thread for this event on our
forum: http://wolfpackscc.com/viewtopic.php?f=39&t=243.

Please e-mail me if you are planning on attending with us.

Other planned events for the semester:

April 8th-11th Autofair in Charlotte NC (one day, more if interested)

April 24th Rockingham Test N Tune

Again, we are open to suggestions and many other events organized between
our club and/or the WSCC can be found on the forum. This list will grow.

Thank you again for your interest and we look forward to having you as a
member of our club!

-Russell Buchanan

The scion TC is my neighbor.
This is an offset of the wolfpack sports car club that failed last year.
There is actually a decent group of guys there. I went to the strip with about 15 of them last year and had a good time.

Once I get the TC looking better it will be much less ricer.

wow, I'm dissapointed seeing how fellow students assume/bash without making an effort to know the club.

No grudges and not trying to stir anything up, I just came across this forum and wanted to set a few things straight.

Ricers-lols, we are far from it. Everyone in the club has built their car the best they can. There are absolutely no fart can exhausts, underglow lights, hell even aftermarket wings. I'd like to know where you picked up on that as our attitude... come to think of it there are only 2 hondas in the club, both tastefully modded.

H8R- We only race at Rockingham and Fayetteville Dragway, complying with all NHRA rules which don't require helmets until you run 12's... which we have one and use if necessary.

TKE-TEG- I'm assuming you mean "poser" and the reason we don't require members to race is because a. not everyone has a car on campus (freshmen) and b. we don't want to pressure people into racing. With that said all of our current active members have raced their car and some members joining us from the WSCC are coming out for their first time come April.

benXJ- I'll admit it wasn't a good representative sample, but that's who were able to to take time out of their day and bring their cars. We have a few mustangs, trans ams, a srt-8 jeep, 240's, a newly built rx-7 just to name a few others. Keep in mind most of our members have their cars as daily drivers primarily, limiting what we can race. We'll have N/A bigger displacement cars displayed during next brickyard day.

Air- you confused the clubs. The WSCC (wolfpack sports car club) instated dues but that failed miserably (their club is struggling bad). We are dues free.

Quinn- the tC used to spray before he went turbo.

Everyone else- waste of my time to respond to.

We had shared a forum with the WSCC but split off, and have our own we made just before break (http://www.wolfpackdsc.com). I encourage you to join if your interested in racing.

We'll be back in the brickyard April 21st with some different cars this go round, feel free to come by and talk. We're headed back out to Rockingham April 24th.

This looks like a pretty diverse/large forum and I'm glad I found it. There are a lot of car people here who I never knew were around.

but honestly, I wouldn't expect students to have anything super powerful. whose got time/place/money to work on a project car when they're in school? I would imagine the club being full of bolt-on cars, but hey, you gotta start somewhere.

as a student, I took my heap to Fayetteville and ran a 15.8@89mph woohoo

Nothing wrong with bolt ons... depending on the car they are relatively cheap and have decent gains.

I only have an intake, smaller pulley, injectors, tune, and a midlength header/dp combo and gained ~75 whp/ 75 wtq

Do you get any deals on runs @the strip being a "member"?

no, drag strips never give discounted rates to groups of any size from what I've seen/experienced.

Join the forum and introduce yourself; our members benefit from the availability of a race helmet if they need it, resources other members are willing to share (air pump, tire gauges, jacks, etc.), and being part of an organized group going instead of trying to race cars all day wayyy above your caliber.

Currently the only event we've had with group rates was our dyno day in January, with another one coming up in fall if not sooner given enough interest.

I'm not really into drag "racing", but I do have an SA 2005 helmet, and I seem to hold my own @the drag strip, and I enjoy launching different cars. I don't need any supplies or tools or the like -I hope- anyway.

However, it would be a lot of fun to bring out some cars from around here. I know Stephen/myself and Tyler have been talking about it, and it'd be great to see Quinn's mythical Honda turbo go out for a run also. <3

freaky friday is a ridiculous circus. used to be fun, but now it's just silly and a waste of time. if you've never been, i would recommend going at least once just to see the spectacle, but that's it. if you want to actually get some runs in, either go very early when the gates open or pick another night/event.

oh, and i'm more than down for yanking the bumpers off of everyone's shit.

optmus- Multiple reasons. There isn't that much interest for 1/8th mile strips in the club. I think everyone prefers the longer/ faster 1/4 mile runs and there really aren't any decently prepped tracks closer to Raleigh than Fayetteville or Rockingham. My first time out to drag strip was at Piedmont and I enjoyed it, it wasn't as fun shifting into 3rd then end of race compared to reaching the top of third/4th at the 1/4's.

Ahmet- why the quotations around racing? If you're a track fan boy I understand because I enjoy autocrosses/track days as much as the next person but drag racing has many advantages over the others and it makes for a better rounded driver in addition to the other types of racing.

dub- avoid freaky fridays if you can... unless you enjoy trying to drive around people dancing in the staging lanes

which equals i have no driving skills, can't launch, and have a slow car. i prefer the 1/4 as well personally, but there is definitely more skill involved posting up a good time in the 1/8th. you have to really be on top of your game at the tree and through the 60ft. your car better be on point to bring the power on the rest of the way as well. in the 1/4 you can recover somewhat from a botched launch, sleeping at the tree, or whatever but the margin for error is much less in the 1/8. i can't say i would be very entertained in anything going slower than deep 7's in the 1/8, though.

Quote :
"there really aren't any decently prepped tracks closer to Raleigh than Fayetteville or Rockingham."

uhhh, piedmont is hands down consistently one of the best prepped tracks around on any night. my best 60ft. by a few tenths was there. roxboro is decent too. benson leaves something to be desired for test/tune nights, but they do prep pretty well for events. the best part is you can be at any of these tracks within 30-45 minutes depending on where you are in raleigh.

Quote :
"I don't know what the hell they are thinking with Freaky Fridays... Other they can attract/charge people that aren't there for racing."

that's exactly what they're thinking... dollar signs. i'm sure freaky friday is one of if not the best nights they put on during the season in terms of what they take in at the gate. not to mention any kickbacks they get for all the grudge racing going on (which is pretty much the only runs that happen after dark). can't blame them really i guess. most dragstrips struggle financially, so they've got to do what they can. i'm just 99% sure if it continues the way it is there's going to be some kind of big incident. a huge brawl, shooting, somebody hit by a car, or something. the bad thing is the trouble isn't even related to the racing per say. it's all the other shit going on and idiots there for the party, not the racing.

Oh please, not much interest? There isnt much interest in a "drag racing club" either! Plus, let's be honest here, none of the cars in your club are really fast enough to be complaining about properly prepped tracks. If your club is a bunch of people with street cars who want to spend some time hitting the strip and getting more experience, then the weekly test and tune at the closest track is what you would be attending.

launch and driving skills affect 1/4 times just as much as 1/8th, plus you get the 1/8th info at a 1/4 as well. R/T doesn't change your ET at test and tunes hoss

Like I said, I enjoyed piedmont when I went. For the same amount of driving we can go to well prepped 1/4 miles... There isn't more benefit from going to the 1/8th if I can go to a quarter for the same time/money and get both 1/8th and 1/4 times in addition to them offering more test n tune days.

We had over 20 people come with us to our last test n tune.

A shitty prepped track can ruin any car's run

Since when can students/anybody afford the time to go every weekend? I enjoy it but I have a life other than drag racing... Between Fayetteville and Rockingham they offer plenty of tnt's to allow us to go once/twice a month.

Actually I'm running stock size 215/45/17's... next set will be 235/40/17's

Getting a decent 60' for your car running "tall skinny street tires" it shows you're a better driver.

Someday I'll run dr's just for the fact no matter how good of driver you are there's a wall for street tire traction , until then I'll do the best I can with my streets.

ORLY? bullshit. if you can't understand how it's easier to make up time and mph in the 1/4 vs. the 1/8, then you need to go ahead and drop out of school because it's not going to work out. you definitely need to quit bothering to drag race.

Quote :

lol are you SERIOUS?? NO WAI!!11 yeah, rt is fucking useless. i'm just here to see how fast i can go, who cares about actual racing! yee haw!

"Since when can students/anybody afford the time to go every weekend?"

since when people have jobs? i was always on a tight budget for sure, but never had much problem funding a regular drag racing AND 4 wheeling habit going to school full time and always keeping one or two part time jobs for money. i dabbled in other events as well like track days (talk about $$), auto-x, etc. i know several others that did the same. hell, it's worse now than when i was in school because i never have any damn time anymore. i also must have missed the part where drag racing is that expensive? it's dirt cheap compared to the other forms of motorsports i've been involved in. well, maybe not demolition derby, but most everything else. it can get expensive to build a car that's worth talking about, but the associated costs of going to the track are nothing comparatively.

i think what's really going on here is a basic lack of experience. how many of you in this club own truly quick cars? is there anything even breaking out of the 12's? anyone ever just driven something that puts up some legit numbers? any of you ever spent any amount of time competitively racing (formal or informal)? if the answers to those questions are NO, then you need to STFU and quit handing out bad advice/information here. you will get called on it, this is not a warm and fuzzy forum like you might be used to. most of the regular posters are well versed on a wide variety of topics and know b.s. when they read it.

lets just call a spade a spade. this is a new club where all of you are still in the very early stages of experiencing/learning things. you're in no real position to be coming in this thread lecturing anyone. i understand you feel the need to put on some sort of front that you're a seasoned veteran to attract new members and make them feel comfortable, but that's not going to fly here. instead of coming in here like king dick drag racer posting your finger wagging novels, just chill out and you might find this place useful/helpful occasionally. at the least, it's entertaining.

I agree with bigblue for the most part, btw dude, I wouldn't mind seeing how fast something you have is. I've driven an 11 sec car, but certainly haven't owned one. It made my at the time high 12 sec. car seem like it was running off boost the entire time... Unfortunate how fast people seem to adapt.

Anyway, so I put quotes around the racing part because drag racing doesn't seem like racing to me. I don't take any sort of racing that seriously anyway, just not my thing. I do however enjoy launching cars and shifting, and seeing what other people have as well. I'm trying to egg on a friend with a 911 GT3 to come out, obviously not a drag car either. I enjoyed auto-xing back in the day, but standing around for hours gets old also. If I could pay $50 and get 15 minutes of driving (as opposed to pay $20, sit around for 3 hours and get maybe 5 minutes), it'd be more appealing. To me track events are the way to go, for a multitude of reasons, but I haven't done anything competitive there in close to 2 years now. I just enjoy driving and teaching others + I'm compensated, so that's nice. I also REALLY enjoy "4 wheeling", but competing there seems like competing in drifting, and I don't really have interest in owning a 4x4 again, maybe some day.

I wouldn't mind going with a group from here, mostly to see how street cars like my 911, Stephen's S60R, etc. would do/feel, again not your typical crowd for drag racing. I'm not going to lie though, the 600hp+ Corvette I drove was pretty fun.

Ok, long rant over. Let's go to a drag strip!
