Spring is not far around the corner. What do you guys have going on?

This is my current project. 1985 Correct Craft Ski Nautique. Hull, stringers, engine, and running gear are all in great shape. Gutted the interior today.





That's a Ford 351W sitting in the middle of the boat. She sounds great and has tons of power for a 19.5' boat. These "2001" hulls are the original wake monsters. They'll make a huge wake when weighted down.

probably selling my GP1300R. i'll be in qatar/afghanistan through most of the spring and all of the summer, so no more boats for me until I get back.

i want some sort of badass speedboat, though...not a lake/river rocket, but something that will handle some chop. doesn't necessarily have to be a full-blown offshore boat, but that may be what i end up with.

I need to reupholster the seats the Moomba Outback and I need to replace all of the wiring in the Mako (20ft shallow V CC). The covers still have snow on them so I can't get motivated yet. I need to replace the valve on the boat lift too. It snapped off in the closed position when one of my buddies turned it the wrong way. Thankfully it was up for the winter. I'm thinking this is gonna be the summer of the new dock. I need to rebuild a lot of it was thinking about building a bar on one section. I won't get to that though until this spring for sure.

I have a boat. It floats and runs, sometimes catches fish. I almost certainly will have others as time goes by. But I will never have a project boat

This is my other boat. I did pretty much everything to it that I'm doing to the 85, so I have a pretty good idea of what to budget for cash and time. The 85 has one little section of bad wood in the floor that I've got to replace though. Hopefully it won't be too much of a bitch.

Hooked my GPS up to my VHF (DSC) in the snow a couple weekends ago, getting an EPIRB hopefully in the next week and installing it, installed an input cable for an IPOD to my CD player, and possibly looking to get t-top outrigger bases instead of the gunnel mount i have now. All this in addition to blowing my wad on a bent butt rod and an 80w as soon as i find a good deal!

Heres my Yahama YZ2000... its 9 years old and has one rebuilt motor now, twin 135hp. Its fun as hell to drive, and can pull anything, just doesn't throw off the best wake.

Cut out the one rotten section of floor today, made a replacement piece of wood along with some steel bracing that will sit on top of the stringers for the new wood to sit on. Prepped the area around it for fiberglass, but ran out of daylight.

Hoping to patch the floor, glass it, and carpet the whole boat tomorrow. Then it's refinishing the teak swim platform, getting the seat upholstery re-stitched, putting the interior back in, and it'll be ready for the lake.

^ Surprisingly, I've never had a chance to ride in one of those "jet ski inspired" jet boats. When I was a kid I knew some guys who had an 80's 454 powered jet boat that was insanely fast, but those Sea Doo and Yamaha boats are a night and day difference on handling by comparison as far as I can tell. I feel like that would be my dd if I could live on a waterway though.

What's available in between the go-fast lake boats (Allison, STV, Hydrostream) and the go-fast offshore boats (Scarab, Donzi, Fountain, Cigarette..."cigarette boats" in general)?

I want something that I could take out to the outer banks as long as it isn't super rough, run on the intracoastal, etc...but I don't necessarily need to be able to run balls-out in 3-4' seas.


Only things I can think of offhand are some Velocity boats (and maybe Checkmate might make something?)

i don't see why one of those lake boats wouldn't work

folks run all over the ICW and sounds and even out the inlets on calm days in 18' skiffs that aren't nearly as smooth and stable as one of those v-hulls

i know a guy in goldsboro who does great work for a good price if you're headed east anytime soon. he moved his stuff behind his house. he recovered the cushions in that hydrasport up there.

I know a guy in Rocky Mount who has done good work for me in the past, but the last two pieces I got from him were not up to par. I'm not going to give him another chance.

yeah, the 22' might do it, if I could find one all ate up with motor (I want an 80 mph boat, or very close to it).

I want to be able to take it places like out to the OBX, out around the hook at Cape Lookout, anywhere in the intracoastal, Pensacola and Mobile bays, etc. I do not need to be able to take it 30 miles out in the open ocean and maintain 40-50 knots the whole way.

A cuddy with at least minimal berthing is something that I won't say I refuse to buy a boat without, but it would definitely be a BIG plus.

Basically, I want something stupid silly fast, that isn't ridiculously expensive, that is practical enough to overnight on at least occasionally and be driven in "real-world" conditions (i.e., not just glassy lakes and rivers), that can be used to waterski, etc.

I don't need to smuggle cocaine across the Caribbean or compete in any offshore races, but a Hydrostream (God bless them) ain't gonna cut it.

so seriously, what kind of boats can I get for $10-15k, give or take, that have a cuddy, will run ~80 mph, and handle rough enough water to go out to Cape Hattaras or across the Mobile Bay? I've seen a few, but I think there's probably other stuff out there that I'm just not finding because I'm not looking for it.

you don't want to take anything that fits all of those catagories offshore very far i promise

closest boat i would even try is a 23' stingray but you really need a longer boat (but then that would cost more if it was in decent shape and if its not in decent shape you shouldn't even try it) and its only gonna run 75 on a single 454.

I don't see any single 454 powered boat doing 75MPH unless it's built more like the one I posted than the big power boats you're looking at.

Something like that would probably do the trick, but I bet it's closer to a 50 MPH boat. No way I'd drive to FL for a 20+ year old $8500 boat though. Too much that could be wrong with it for me to be ok with the idea of driving that far and returning empty handed.

kills valuable storage space, won't hold as much as a floor tank, requires you to get in the boat to gas up. all around suckage

but a boat with a CC tank is better than no boat

72.3 gps... the one i've been on read 78mph on the gauge but 72 sounds reasonable.
keep in mind stingray still holds the patent on the z-hull which is the fastest hull per hp on the market.
and honestly on smith mountain lake in VA it beat the crap out of a donzi 22 with a blown alki 502 just cause the chop was so bad he couldn't keep the thing straight while in the throttle.

I guess that explains why Stingray boats always have the best MPG in their class too.

That is the exception to the rule, but a good find nonetheless. A quick CL scan shows some of the mid-to-late 90's models in the $15k range that theduke mentioned.

great one of the motors in my boat is blown again... told my dad not to use some mobile mechanic to fix it... Yamaha dealership whats close to 4k to rebuilt the damn thing. Looks like we are going to be getting rid of the boat as is

its a Yamaha LS2000...
