Quote :
"The track at Whistler, which is shared by the sports of luge, skeleton and bobsleigh, already has a reputation as one of the fastest - and most dangerous - in the world.

In the build-up to the Games several teams had raised concerns about the safety of athletes, who regularly exceed 90mph as they compete.

Before Kumaritashvili's crash, British skeleton slider Amy Williams told BBC Sport: "I just hope Whistler is safe and that there aren't too many crashes and serious injuries."

Australia's Hannah Campbell-Pegg added: "I think they are pushing it a little too much.

"To what extent are we just little lemmings that they just throw down a track and we're crash-test dummies? I mean, this is our lives."

Their comments followed earlier accidents, including one involving gold medal favourite Armin Zoeggeler of Italy and several during women's luge training runs on Wednesday.

Among those to crash was Romania's Violeta Stramaturaru, who was knocked unconscious for a few minutes and taken to hospital.

British skeleton's performance director, Andi Schmid, said a lack of track time for athletes in the run-up to the Games had increased the risk of accidents.

"I would say especially for speed sports you need to have more access to tracks and whoever organises the Olympics needs to offer that," said Schmid during preparations for the Games."

This is horrible, but I find the complaints for total safety a little odd from people who have agreed to ride on a sled at 90 MPH, head-first, with very little protection.

^? while this is a tragedy I applaud Canada for building the baddest track around. This ain't the local sledding hill, this is meant for the best in the world. If you don't feel you're the best and would like to relinquish your chance to prove it please pack up and go home.

fuck me. just watched the video. absolutely horrific. brutal. undoubtedly he died instantly.

seems kind of dumb to have medal posts lining the track like that without some sort of netting.

Any netting tight enough to catch someone there would cause almost as much damage.

they could enclose the top of the track with a smooth gerbil tube like covering thing that would at least keep his momentum directed down the course. That said, hindsight is 20/20...

As I suspected, the "Blame Canada" crowd has already started crowing about how Canada limited training time on the track in the lead-up to the games.

it's called being sick, dude.

if i'd seen it live that's one thing, but googling your fingers off to watch a video of someone's death is sick.

^not really...it depends on the circumstances. after watching this video there was nothing gory about it.

On that note, its no different than people googling their fingers off to watch Saddam's hanging.

It's human nature to be curious, yes, and that understandably occurs when people are stuck in traffic next to an accident or when a fight breaks out in high school.

Actively seeking out footage of someone's death is a completely different matter.

and yeah, I agree with you d7freestyler. No one needs to actively search out this video in order to see this shit.
