I'm looking for some ideas of quasi-traditional [heterosexual] wedding cake toppers. If you've seen one that stuck in your mind from some wedding or website gone by, I encourage you to post a picture of it. I'm trying to muse up some creativity beyond the couple-in-tux-and-dress-standing-there-on-the-top-of-the-cake thing.

We made Lego people that looked like us: me in a wedding dress and him in forest firefighting gear. They were awesomeuntil mom threw a shitfit over it I personally don't like this, but a lot of people are doing initials. Goes along with that monogramming your car thing. people monogram cars? lolwat?

people monogram cars? lolwat?Find something that is meaningful to the two of you. We're using shisa for ours because it reminds us of Okinawa and we've been living in Japan for too damn long The ones we bought look kind of like this:I also think the monogram as a cake topper looks stupid, especially when it has lots of "bling" like rhinestones and crap. I'm sure someone can make it look not stupid, but I have yet to see it

I don't see anything wrong with making a thread specifically for this.I think the monogrammed things are over done.My friend was married on a cruise ship last year and she used a heart seashell thing for her topper...It was cute but it broke on the way to the cruise ship and I had to fix it with my chewing gum...lol...I think these are cute. I bet I could make some of these out of clay.

here's our homemade topper

FREAKING CUTE!

I'd actually added that thread to my topics a while back. I checked the custom website, but I dunno if I'm going to treasure a clay keepsake more than my $200 bucks [Edited on January 18, 2010 at 7:21 PM. Reason : ^x5]

Whoa $200 for a cake topper I can think of a lot better things to spend 200 bucks on.

I saw those...yikes.Those "woman dragging the man" or the "sexy bride" are so tacky IMO.As Jim Gaffegan would say, "I hope you're going home to a trailer."

A nice monogrammed cake topper, IMO

haha the sock money topper is cute!but it would have to go with the rest of the wedding or it might be random

Sorry I couldn't find a close up of the front, but I really loved ours. It was one of those Willow Tree things from Hallmark.

Some people order fresh flowers to use as their cake topper. We didn't use a cake topper. We had a three tiered cake stand and I had the top tier decorated like the other two tiers. But I have to admit that I just slapped my wedding together.

Love Pinch lol

Our friends had Fry and Leela from Futurama as their cake topper, and Bender hanging off the side. It was one of the coolest cakes I've ever seen. (Hi Garrison, if you read this!)Since we had a beach wedding, our topper was two Adirondack chairs. I was really against having tiny people on our cake, and I thought a monogram would be pretentious, so I really liked how it turned out.

^We did two Adirondack chairs also! Here was our cake: [Edited on January 18, 2010 at 9:18 PM. Reason : ]

I've come to the conclusion that people cake toppers are more or less out. There's a couple of fun ones out there, but its tough to be irreverently humorous in a way that all the guests will find amusing (read: old folks), and my taste for irreverent humor tends to lead in to the offensive type of content. We're probably going to go for the monogrammed letters look, though I do dig the idea of having two little dogs at the top since ours won't be there in person present.[Edited on January 19, 2010 at 11:39 AM. Our cake had the monogram made into it so i made a fleur de lis cake topper. the only premade ones i could find were 100+ and ugly, so i bought a shiny belt buckle from ebay and hacked it.

We just did the flower option. Our caked looked like complete ass (almost like it had fallen over in the van) so we threw tons of flowers around it and on the top layer to distract for how hideous it was. We also used a tree stump as the cake stand. If the cake wouldn't have been so bad then the display would have been nice.[Edited on January 19, 2010 at 2:03 PM. Reason : Ugly ass cake]

Yea our cake was a disaster. The bottom layer was supposed to be a yellow cake with chocolate gnash (it was white no chocolate), the middle layer was supposed to be a carrot cake (it was white), and the top layer was supposed to the same as the bottom (it was carrot). The cake was supposed to feed 175. We had 150 guests at the wedding and HAD to cut the top anniversary layer to have enough cake to go around. There is no way all 150 guests had cake (my husband didn't even get a slice). The chocolate piping which was supposed to be a scroll/leaf pattern looked like a 5 year old did it. AND on top of its looks the damn stuff was melting off when it arrived and created brown streaks all over the cake. The bastard man wouldn't return phone calls, emails, letters, and was never there when we went to complain. No refund and no anniversary layer which was promised.Do your research on cake people. It by no means ruined the day but it was embarassing to see people laughing at the cake.
1/19/2010 2:51:08 PM
^I would have trashed it and told everyone that the "cake guy" got in a wreck....then would have gone out and bought a bunch of cakes at the local grocery store so people could have some cake and you could smash it in your husband's face. That shit is pretty abysmal.
1/19/2010 2:54:24 PM
He delivered it to the reception site as we were getting in the cars to go to the wedding. No time to fix. My mom grabbed the wedding director immediately after the ceremony and said go now, cake bad. She grabbed a floral arrangement and made the surroundings look decent. Smashing it would have been a good idea though if there had been time. We all laugh about it now but that day. Damn.

On a similar note, I too am hunting an awesome cake topper. My fiance' is in vet school at K-State, but I am NCSU alum so I was thinking of having Mrs. Wuf and Willie Wildcat (their mascot) instead of a bride and groom, but I'm having a heck of a time finding anything that is Mrs. Wuf. Any ideas? I am moderately crafty, so I'm considering making them out of clay, but I'm sure something pre-made like an ornament or figurine would look better. Thanks for any ideas!
1/19/2010 4:10:26 PM
They sell cake toppers at the NCSU bookstore. You'd probably have to buy the set, but it's definitely got Mrs. Wuf in it.
1/19/2010 4:13:30 PM
^^I have the mister and mrs wuf cake toppers...I got them on sale at the bookstore years ago.
1/19/2010 4:17:37 PM
we actually ended up not using any toppers. there were supposed to be a couple of flowers but that didn't happen for some reason. i didn't really care.
1/19/2010 4:43:36 PM
^^^ Lies They discontinued them a few years ago ^^^^ There's a chick on Etsy that custom makes mix and match university mascot cake toppers. I forget her name but I'm sure it's easy to find in an Etsy search.

We went with the stand Willow Tree cake topper - but I loved it. I looked on ETSY, but couldn't justify the cost of the custom made. And our cake was beyond awesome - both in looks/taste. http://photos-e.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc3/hs011.snc3/11863_742603659269_11805294_41711532_2047350_n.jpg[Edited on January 19, 2010 at 7:47 PM.
