So I was trying to update my Bios because Dell had a new upgrade and it failed midway through somehow so now Vista and the system Bios aren't detecting my DVD drive.

It's a TS-L632H slim drive that came stock with my Dell Inspiron 1720.

I've tried the fix that everyone always suggests about going in to regedit and getting rid of the upperlimit and lowerlimit lines for the DVD/CD drive. Didn't work.

I reset the system bios to the default settings and it didn't work. I can't imagine it's a wire or plug issue because it was working fine until the failed Bios update. Even working this morning before I tried it.

System restore point didn't work.

Any ideas?

** Also, when I reset the computer I get a "system modular bay cannot be identified" which is obviously referring to the DVD/CD drive...

yeah, it sounds like you done fucked it up. still under warranty?

also, have you tried forcing a reflash of the bios?

Just forced a reflash... no luck.

Guess I'm gonna have to deal with Tech Support again tomorrow. Still under warranty at least...

Warranty it. Go through the online chat support to save yourself a few headaches of calling in.

^yeh, chat is the way to go. try to do it on another computer though... there are often required reboots, etc which make the chatting a pain. the only draw back is if they want to remote into the computer... but in my experience, this doesn't happen often.

They are replacing the optical drive... though I really don't think that will make a difference.

It was working fine until the firmware update froze it. I can't imagine it's a hardware issue... but what do I know.

I should have tried to reset the bios manually but I don't want to dig around the system when it's still under warranty and somehow void it.
