After watching the Georgia Tech game this weekend I started thinking about Cremmins Court. Other than being a character what did he really do to deserve having the court named after him? It seems to me that any one of Valvano, Sloan, or Case would be way more deserving of having a court named after them. I know Kay Yow got the reynolds court for her impressive resume and (sad to say but true) her cancer fight.
In any case we have 3 coaches from our past that have accomplished more than Cremmins, did more for the University, and have been vastly more important to the ACC as a whole.

Can we please name our court after one of our coaching legends?

I don't think Jimmy V, Sloan, or Case would want their name on our court given the abortion of a team we have. I would almost be an embarassment to their name.

As for Cremins, yeah I have always wondered the same things in terms of his accomplishments. I guess he did have Lethal Weapon 3 with Dennis Scott, Brian Oliver, and Kenny Anderson and they made a final four. He "recruited" Stephon Marbury too so that counts for something

^^Im starting to believe this is true. And I heard there is a push to build a Kay Yow memorial on campus somewhere...I have to wonder, why not make it a memorial for both? There are the obvious and unfortunate similarities there, and I dont think having a shared memorial will take away from the other. Unfortunately the PTB would never allow something named after Jimmy V, but until we acknowledge that he did, in fact, coach here at one point, we are doomed to suck.

Valvano maybe, Sloan NO he left us for Florida, Case would be my choice. Case was doing great things and wouldn't you know it died from cancer. He had Reynolds built, started the tradition of cutting down the nets, and won 10 conference titles between the Southern and ACC.

One problem is, Hurricanes management have I think more rights than the university does on what goes on in RBC center. This goes with advertising/naming rights. Otherwise I think it would have been named a long time ago for someone who gave the university/athletics a crapton of money.

Case has a bldg after him. I dont keep up with university sports history as much as you guys so I dont know Sloan. Im down with JimmyV though.

Im glad reynolds court got named for Yow. And yes I agree that they should dual name the memorial for both of them, but that said, Yow was here a lot longer than V was. Ok yes due to circumstances, but point still stands. thats a big reason why its just for her now from what ive heard.

Considering how much ESPN shows and supports the V Foundation and always gives love to Jimmy V, I think we should name our court after him. For an outsider, it is not always obvious that Jimmy V earned his legacy at NC State and by having his name on our court, it may help some people make the connection better. Yeah most real sports fans know Jimmy V, 1983, NC State, but for the casual fan out there, it cannot hurt.

I know Jimmy V was a good coach and we won it in 83 under him but we can't name the court after him. All the sanctions from the Jimmy V era are what killed state basketball. We have not gotten back to that level since.

I think that naming something around campus for Sloan/V should be done and I think that we should build some athletic hall of fame somewhere noticeable so that current students recognize the importance NCSU basketball played in the foundation of basketball as we know it today. I also think that naming the court the Jimmy V Foundation Court would be the best idea. It allows us to honor V, while also allowing us to pay tribute to the great organziation he left after his death. I think that some kind of statues of all 3 should go outside the RBC, and that matching statues should be placed with the Kay Yow one that they're planning to go between Talley/Reynolds. In my opinion something else also needs to be named after Case who is one of the greatest college basketball coaches in history.

I think another very easy and feasible idea that is a bit unrelated is to put more NCSU stuff inside the RBC. There are no block S's on the floor of the concourse, no big pictures, or anything like that. All we have is a trophy case with trophies in it that couldn't be any more uncelebrated sitting against a wall by the steps.

At any rate:

Accordingly, the committee did not apply the full scope of the prescribed penalties for major
violations, but rather imposed the following additional penalties.
A. The university shall be publicly reprimanded and censured, and placed on probation for a
period of two years from the date these penalties are imposed, which shall be the date the 15-day
appeal period expires or the date the institution notifies the executive director that it will not
appeal, whichever is earlier, or the date established by NCAA Council subcommittee action as a
result of an appeal by the university to the Council, it being understood that should any portion
of any of the penalties in this case be set aside for any reason other than by appropriate action of
the Association, the penalties shall be reconsidered by the Committee on Infractions. Further,
North Carolina State University shall be subject to the provisions of NCAA Bylaw 19.4.2.3
concerning repeat violators for a five-year period beginning on the effective date of the penalties
in this case.
B. During this period of probation, the institution shall: (1) develop and implement a system for
administrative control and monitoring to ensure compliance with NCAA legislation, which shall
include, but not be limited to, economic audits of student-athletes in men's [Page 9] basketball to
ensure that improper benefits are not being obtained through use of complimentary admissions or
issuance of equipment; (2) design and implement a comprehensive educational program (e.g.,
seminars and testing) to instruct coaches and athletics department personnel on NCAA
legislation, and (3) develop a system for monitoring the institution's compliance with NCAA
rules, which includes appropriate checks and balances and oversight by appropriate faculty and/
or administrative representatives from outside the department of intercollegiate athletics -- a
preliminary written report to be submitted to the enforcement staff by August 15, 1990, that sets
forth a general review of its system for administrative control and institutional compliance with
NCAA legislation, a schedule for establishing this compliance and educational program, and a
final written report to the enforcement staff at the end of the probationary period. Such reports
shall give particular emphasis to the administration of complimentary admissions to studentathletes
and control of uniforms and equipment issued to student-athletes.
C. The institution's men's basketball team shall end its 1989-90 season with the playing of its last
regularly scheduled, in-season contest and shall not be eligible to participate in any postseason
competition, including a foreign tour, following that season.
D. The institution's men's basketball team shall not be eligible to appear on any "live" telecast (as
defined by Bylaw 19.4.2.5.2) during the 1989-90 season. [NOTE: This penalty is immediately
and completely suspended based upon the mitigating factors set forth above.]
E. As noted, the committee adopts the university's actions of self-imposed restrictions on the
number of athletics grants-in-aid it may award during the 1990-91 and 1991-92 academic years.
In this regard, the institution shall award no more than 12 athletically related grants-in-aid that
are countable under Bylaw 15.02.3 in the sport of men's basketball; further, this limitation would
not permit the university to terminate athletics aid for any current recipient who otherwise
remains eligible for intercollegiate competition during the period of this penalty.
F. The institution shall eliminate all off-campus recruiting activities in the sport of men's
basketball for a one-year period. [NOTE: Because the university has self-imposed an equivalent
penalty on its men's basketball program, the committee adopts the institutional penalty in lieu of
action specified in Bylaw 19.4.2.2-(c), it being understood that the institutional prohibition shall
remain in effect for the period September 1, 1989, to August 31, 1990, and shall have the same
force and effect as if the provisions of Bylaw 19.4.2.2-(c) had been applied.] [Page 10]
G. The institution shall be prohibited from providing any expense-paid visit to the institution for
prospective student-athletes in the sport of men's basketball for a one-year period. [NOTE:
Because the university has self-imposed an equivalent penalty on its men's basketball program,
the committee adopts the institutional penalty in lieu of action specified in Bylaw 19.4.2.2-(b), it
being understood that the institutional prohibition shall remain in effect for the period from
September 1, 1989, to August 31, 1990, and shall have the same force and effect as if the
provisions of Bylaw 19.4.2.2-(b) had been applied.]
H. Bylaw 19.4.2.2-(d) of the minimum penalty provisions requires action with respect to the
athletically related employment responsibilities of institutional employees "determined by the
committee knowingly to have engaged in or condoned a major violation . . . ." In this regard, the
university has taken action to restructure its athletics department in order to achieve a higher
level of understanding of, and compliance with, NCAA legislation. The university has separated
the positions of director of athletics and men's head basketball coach, established a new position
for a compliance officer and reassigned the duties of other individuals. Additionally, to ensure
that the athletics program has sufficient time to educate its coaches on NCAA rules and
regulations, the university has limited the size of its men's basketball staff for the 1989-90 and
1990-91 academic years to no more than a head coach, two assistants and one additional coach
(who will be either a volunteer coach or a part-time coach as permitted by NCAA legislation).



ETA: Most of the big stuff was self-imposed, but we wouldn't have avoided it if we hadn't done it ourselves, and it might have been worse.
