Has anyone every requested to add a course for the college of management? If you are not in the college of management and want to take classes in there you have to petition to take the class. I want to take a BUS class but I was wondering if it is difficult to get in. I want to take BUS 320 and there are 181 seats available. They ask you to print out your degree audit when submitting your request. Is it just seat availability they check for or are they looking at your grades and decide from that?

do whatever it is they want you to do, contact the instructor and let them know you'd like to take the course, then show up to class until they say you're officially in or officially tell you to stop coming.

Or, depending on the class size, just show up and sit in the back. I've sat in on a few large classes with no problems. That doesn't work if you want credit for the class. But if you just want to take the class, it's pretty easy to do in large sections.

i think the OP wants to know how to get into a class for which you don't meet the restrictions. the OP is bio sciences and wants to take a business class that has available seats.

from what he wrote, the restriction is that it's for business majors. I've taken courses in various programs that were restricted to students in those majors (which I was not). Usually, if there are seats available after the semester begins, especially that many, most departments will let people in who don't meet the "major/college" restriction.

Those "college/major" restrictions are typically intended to assure there are enough seats for students in that program who actually need the course. If there are 50 open seats.... they probably won't care. Nothing worst than needed 1 or 2 specific courses to graduate and not being able to get in because it's full, and with students are don't really need the course.

So like I said, show up on the first day of class. This does a couple of things; A) show's that you're serious and B) prevents you from starting the course behind because you didn't get approval until the 5th class session.

Again, if you don't care about getting credit for the course, just go. If it's a big class with a lot of open seats, you can essentially just go to the lectures, keep up with the readings, do the work (don't turn it in), etc. If it's not a big class, you're probably gonna have to let the instructor know you're interested in taking the class but don't meet the restriction.


I've taken plenty of classes for which i didn't meet the restrictions or pre-reqs. If you talk to the instructor, and express and demonstrate serious interest, they will usually help you out if there are seats. Shoot, I've taken math courses I didn't have the pre-req. for.

I know what the OP was asking, but with that many open seats it's not very likely you'll be turned down if you simply talk to the prof about it. Skip all that needless bullshit paperwork if you can

I realize this thread is about joining restricted courses...which I've done. Hear me out, maybe I can offer some insight.
Go to class and talk to the teacher. Be sure to have a good explanation as to why you want to attend the course and definitely show an interest in it. I've done this 3 times before and the teacher placed me in the class after people had dropped out within the first few weeks of the start of the course.
Don't email the teacher, go there in person and introduce yourself.
You should be fine, keep us posted.

COM changed the rules this semester. Shouldn't be too hard to get into. If it's the one with Sloan it's well worth taking. Easy A+ if you get it but it's also useful info. There were quite a few engineers in my class iirc.

As had been mentioned, show up the first day, HOWEVER, this is not necessarily the best time to approach the instructor. Find out when their first set of office hours are being held and go visit then. Have any paperwork (or knowledge of paperwork that needs to be filled out) available to explain to the instructor.

So long as the course isn't too full, and the instructor sees a genuine interest from you, usually not a problem getting in.
