im looking around for a software that will take an MP3 and strip off the singing and leave the music.
i tried a few, but none seem to work.

does anyone know a way to do this?

it's not as easy as you are trying to make it. I would search for torrents of acapella music that djs use (for mashups and whatnot)--no point recreating the wheel.

This is why karaoke cd/dvd/laserdiscs exist. It ain't possible to do well. Winamp back in the day had the best vocal stripper plugin I've ever seen, but even it was pretty hit or miss.
