My old company used SP Server mostly for document library purposes and at my new company, we have nothing like it and I miss it. Basically I need a solution where several offices can submit large scanned files and/or check out and modify documents that they need to submit to me every week. Would be really nice to get back to seeing document versions, seeing when my people accesses/uploaded their files, etc.

We currently are accessing all of our email/desktops via a remote desktop terminal server so we have hosting space. Would need 15-20 people to have access to Sharepoint at this time, 8 or so do not have access to our terminal server and would need to access Sharepoint via web.

If we are looking at just using document library for now, what are the costs associated with implementing and maintaining MS SPS?

Searched google and found some info

Just contact a Microsoft rep. You'll have all your questions answered in 5 minutes.

There are multiple vendors who have software products that will perform this function. However, yes,. I agree with your suggestion though, get a Sales Rep. on the line. They'll be able to access additional resources to get your questions answered.

One big suggestion: Make sure you commit the necessary internal resources (person-hours, % of a job, etc.) if you do commit to a software package.

They can answer your questions of cost, as well as addressing the actual needs of your organization and connecting you to partners that can implement and support you.

^They aren't sales reps. Our field representatives do a LOT more than just push product, in fact I'd say it's actually a pretty small part of their job and expertise.

Especially if you want to customize something, or the solution needs to be 508-compliant/accessible... help you if you ever need SharePoint to be 508-compliant with the bile it spews out and calls HTML

^^ Firefox is manageable, 508 compliancy is suicide-worthy

although I've heard from numerous sources that SP 2010 is supposed to be a lot better

That is what I am finding. For what we need WSS today it would fit perfectly.

I also found a great comparison chart for those in a similar situation: http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/sharepointtechnology/FX101758691033.aspx
