random insomnia-inspired local music thoughts of the hour:veelee will probably put out an LP this year, and i am willing to put money on the fact that it will be highly enjoyablealso, i've heard rough mixes of the new future islands LP and it rulesditto for the new lonnie walker EP
1/2/2010 6:33:05 AM
i have this in my cache and just decided to post it in here
1/2/2010 5:51:38 PM
y not...should be the end of Ringo Starr. However, Walk with you should be wedding song of the year. It's the only good song on the album (Paul saving him on this one).
1/2/2010 8:58:45 PM
should be a new guster cd this year. thats probably enough for me for the year but i'll attempt to discover some new things to keep it fresh.
1/2/2010 11:47:29 PM
Got around to listening to Contra...it's pretty bad.One good song ("Giving Up the Gun") and another I'm split on ("Diplomat's Son"), and that's it as far as decent tracks. Not that I expected much, but still.
1/4/2010 5:29:53 AM
I don't care what anybody says, I'm digging that Cousins song

A few of the bands I am looking forward to new releases from this year:Dillinger Escape PlanMinus the BearJimmy Eat WorlddeftonesArsis (honestly expecting this to be a little weak tho)This Will Destroy YouMGMTJÓNSIArcade Fire
1/5/2010 1:51:24 PM
wow, deftones? are we gonna see new stuff from crazytown or staind, too?btw, front page of their website: http://www.thenewpornographers.com/

1/5/2010 2:25:02 PM
those two bands don't even deserved to be mentioned in the same sentence. Deftones were/are a very innovative/experimental band comprised of some seriously talented members (Abe Cunningham is still one of my favorite modern drummers) that just happened to get slapped with the "nu-metal" tag given to other bands like Staind, Disturbed etc.Someone like Crazytown put out something like 1 or 2 absolutely terrible albums with 1 (still terrible) song that saw some commercial success. The deftones have been around for over 22 years with a full catalog of great albums. I know not everyone is going to like their sound and that's no skin off my back, but the deftones were around before, during, and after all the crappy "nu-metal" bands that record labels tried to lump in with them./rantBack on topic though. I'm very interested to see what the new MGMT album sounds like. I really enjoyed the last album (even if it was a bit patchy with really good songs and ok songs) but kinda wonder if they are just going to fizzle out on this next one or what.[Edited on January 5, 2010 at 2:55 PM. I'm not a big deftones fan, but they're definitely not in the same category as that other shit.As much as I like Dave Fridmann's style, I hope MGMT go back to the more electro style they used on their EP as opposed to the way things were arranged on Oracular Spectacular. ]

I can't decide what I think about the Vampire Weekend. On first listen I thought it was cool they had had seemed to mature a bit, especially lyrically, but what happened to the hooks? It's sort of uneventful, but I'll give it more spins.I feel the same way about the new Midlake and it's killing me. I loved their last one so much and just knew they would blow my mind after waiting so long for another record.I do think the Midlake is much stronger than the Vampire Weekend thus far, but my expectations were higher.Of course, the last Midlake took me several listens to finally get into.
1/6/2010 12:29:16 AM
will someone pm me vampire weekend and midlake pleeeeeeeeeease?

If you enjoy Peter Gabriel, you'll like the new VW.If you liked the previous VW stuff, you won't like the new VW.The new Massive Attack has piqued my interest. I've been getting back into them again, really haven't listened to them much since '03.
1/6/2010 2:09:19 PM
Peter Gabriel wrote good songs. These are not good songs.
1/6/2010 8:56:34 PM

1/7/2010 11:00:16 PM
Whenever i think of Vampire Weekend, I'm like 50% annoyed, and 50% charmed.and, I guess Danger Mouse's "niche" now is just to make beats for front men with Indy cred?[Edited on January 7, 2010 at 11:03 PM. Reason : fasdfas]

1/8/2010 2:33:41 PM
I've listened to a ton of Vampire Weekend songs, some of them multiple times, and it isn't growing on me.
1/8/2010 3:26:49 PM
eh, upon first listen, it's pretty weak, especially compared to the debut.i concede, vinylbandit (although i dig run too).[Edited on January 9, 2010 at 2:22 AM. Reason : and diplomat's son is catchy at points]
1/9/2010 2:13:30 AM
there are some catchy songs on it, no doubt, but it's bullshit overall
1/9/2010 3:54:39 AM
