I'm so happy about Marc-Andre Fleury making Team Canada. It wasn't really a surprise after the way he's been playing all year, but he worked his ass off for it. I'm really surprised that there isn't one Calgary Flame on the blueline, especially after all the money that they threw at defensemen in the offseason.Either way, Team Canada is going to be dirty. They actually built a team with depth and didn't just go for an NHL all-star team.
12/30/2009 12:51:23 PM
wow alot of these teams look really really good Russia and Finland look like they could be crazy awesome with their goalies, same with Canada. Hopefully this I will be as epic as usual.

Mikael Samuelsson on not making Team Sweden:
12/30/2009 4:25:42 PM
Where did you read that?
12/30/2009 4:29:07 PM
He's definitely going to regret it when one of their glass players like Forsberg gets hurt in the next month and they don't select him as the replacement because of his comments.I will enjoy watching Slovakia as usual. It's a blast from the past with the likes of Ziggy Palffy and Jozef Stumpel. Holla at Josef Vasicek in the Czech Republic lineup.

All this Olympic talk got me watching old clips...the Canada/Czech semifinal shootout from '98 is especially interesting because you start to hear the rooting interest of the CBC commentators as the shootout goes on; they start calling all of the Canadians by their first names.
12/30/2009 4:45:47 PM
I'm surprised that Russia left off Kovalev. I know he's over the hill, and not having a great season... but you can't honestly tell me that fucking Kozlov is better. Kozlov couldn't do shit in Washington on a line with Backstrom and Ovechkin for crying out loud.
12/30/2009 6:08:32 PM
Normally I am all for some team Canada (yay Marty!) but with Zach likely to get the nod for the US I have to go with the home boys. I still think team Canada's jerseys are better looking though. How Phaneuf isn't on team Canada is beyond me.[Edited on December 30, 2009 at 7:31 PM. Reason : .]
12/30/2009 7:30:29 PM
^Phaneuf I believe is way overhyped. J-Bo had a much better argument than Dion. I personally like Doughty getting the nod over either. If NHL players are used in Russia in 4 years (so up in the air right now) then this is smart. Plus, staying up late and seeing Kings games, Doughty has been so impressive considering he just turned 20.The US team should be interesting, I'm still pissed Jussi Jokinen didn't make the Finnish team. It would only be fitting if they were to lose in a shootout by one in the medal rounds. I mean how can you not select someone who not only has great chemistry with one of your top defensemen in Pitkanen, but also the all time leading shootout goal scorer in the NHL?
12/30/2009 7:44:00 PM
Phaneuf is kinda like Green. They have enough offense from the back end that there is no need for guys who are irresponsible in their own end.Supposedly they were still debating between Doughty and Bouwmeester this morning.

Ryan Whitney will replace Martin, but Gleason will probably replace Komisarek once he is officially ruled out.
2/1/2010 9:51:54 PM
I hope Gleason takes Paul Martin's spot, not Whitney. I just have never really liked Ryan Whitney for some reason, I don't know why. He's a good defenseman, I just think that in a short tournament Gleason offers more in terms of a physical defenseman over Whitney. I could be wrong, but just my opinion. What's the status for Team Finland? Is Selanne still hurt and would Jussi Jokinen be the first choice for his replacement?
2/1/2010 10:12:30 PM

2/5/2010 1:18:55 AM
fuck the NHL for putting games right through to Sunday and giving only 1 day off between the end league games and the start of the tourney. The NHL i.e. Gary Asshat Bettman needs a serious attitude adjustment when it comes to the Olympics.
2/12/2010 3:58:13 PM
The US will live and die by goaltending. Hopefully Miller is shaky as hell in his first game and they sit him down.If he decides he wants to play like he did two months ago, though, I'm fine with that.
2/12/2010 4:03:34 PM
It would be nice if he turned his pissed offness from last night against the Canes into the motivation needed to focus on being an elite goalie. I hate the banana slugs the same as everyone else, but in this instance we need Miller to be in top form. Damn knows Marty isn't so the US may have a legit chance as long as it doesn't turn into the Ovechkin show.
2/12/2010 5:46:57 PM
Miller's mask
2/12/2010 7:15:04 PM
^^ Marty won't be playing the important games.
2/12/2010 7:22:42 PM
I hope not Brian, but that's a tough call...Best goalie for the past decade (Brodeur) vs the best goalie now (Luongo)...not even sure who'd I'd take...
2/13/2010 2:34:08 AM
Not sure if Fleury will play a prelim game, but I think Luongo will be impressive enough vs. Brodeur in his prelim that he'll get the start in the first knockout game and they'll have no choice but to ride him.Granted, Luongo has an iffy history in big games so far, but Brodeur has been even iffier over the past few seasons.
2/13/2010 2:39:45 AM
Luongo getting lit up by the Wild. Between him and Marty it's a hell of a way to head into the Olympics. . . . . .

I'd go with Luongo when it comes to crunch time. World Cup in '04 he stood on his head vs. the Czechs in the semi when Brodeur couldn't go due to injury. Plus it's his home rink.[Edited on February 14, 2010 at 10:26 PM. Reason : '04 not 94 cotdam]

2/15/2010 12:00:13 PM
nbc sucks, period. their handling of olympic hockey is just another thing to add to their list of horrible decisions and coverage of events over the past decade.
2/15/2010 12:15:27 PM
^^Well NBC's argument from that link makes total sense, and I love hockey. They can show several things in that 3 hour block that more people will watch, or show one thing in the 3 hour block that less people will watch. [Edited on February 15, 2010 at 12:27 PM. Reason : f]
2/15/2010 12:26:11 PM
Yeah, I mean let's face it, networks go for the short time ratings gain. It doesn't matter if it's NBC, ABC, Fox, CBS, ESPN, Versus, USA, Disney Channel, or whatever. It's the reason why ice dancing will be on NBC and USA/Canada will be bumped to MSNBC, and it's the reason why the only NHL teams you can watch on national television are Detroit/Pittsburgh/Philadelphia/New York/Washington. Long term implications are irrelevant; whether that's right or not, who knows, but that's the way it works in the television industry.
2/15/2010 12:29:33 PM
Luongo starts tomorrow, Brodeur starts against Switzerland. No word on US goalies, so have to assume Miller tomorrow and Thomas against Norway.

sucks that Miller and Quick have to remove/cover the words on their helmets
