So I have an old hp scanner that they refuse to support on Vista or 7. I recently went from XP -> 7 and found this out. So I figured I'd play with vmware and do an XP install basically just so I could use this scanner. I've done nothing more than install vmware and created a new VM. I basically don't know anything else at this point. I tried explorer and the internetz through my VM isn't working, how do I fix that?

probably a dumb thing to suggest, but you might need to look at your VM's configuration settings to see if it has a virtual network adapter "installed."

What version are you running? You've installed XP to the VM already?

If you're using Windows 7 Professional or Ultimate, you can download XP Mode from Microsoft.http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtual-pc/If not, you can download Virtual PC and install your old XP on it.http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtual-pc/support/virtual-pc-2007.aspxFYI in case VMWare doesn't work out.

durr, I remember reading a few weeks ago about XP mode. I switched the networking from NAT to bridged and Im downloading the drivers now. Didn't feel like fuxing with the NAT to figure out where the routing was dieing. In the mean time, I set up a shared folder to move files that way and I can't figure out where on the VM the shared folder gets created/linked.

did you install VMWare Tools? I thought it should install automatically after creating a new virtual machine. VMWare Tools takes care of a lot of drivers and communications between the host and the VM

Rofl, so vmware doesn't play nice with USB devices (at least for non ubers like myself), so Im downloading XP mode.

VirtualBox as another option. imo an easier-to-use option, at that.
