Some friends of mine are having issues with their driveshafts. They all say they have 2004 dodge ram trucks w/ cummins turbo diesel (they look newer to me, but idk anything about these trucks). I believe they are 3/4 ton or 1 ton. One is a 5spd auto, one is a 6 spd manual and I'm not sure the third one. Anyways, at ~130,000 miles the front driveshaft on all 3 broke. They've ordered a driveshaft from the local NAPA store TWICE and neither shaft is correct. Is this a common problem with these trucks? Will they need to have a custom driveshaft made?

it would probably be cheaper to take them to a local shop and have a new shaft made. and what broke? just the u joints? the local shop could point you in the right direction and maybe upgrade the parts that keep braking. and it sounds like your friends need to stop hooking up the trucks and pulling.

I think it is pretty common but I dont know. Try a Cummins forum, maybe http://www.cumminsforum.com or maybe a diesel Ram forum, what could that be called... http://www.dieselram.com maybe?

Ok, I asked for clarification on the issue tonight: it is the CV joint that keeps failing, not the shaft itself. One of them was told it'd be just as well to replace the whole thing than just the joint, because they're so expensive. The driveshaft they got from NAPA was 6" longer or shorter than the stock driveshaft.

I already read some forums, but I checked those ^ too and I read someone say Dodge doesn't make them anymore. I got the impression it is a fairly common problem. Guess my buddies need to go to a custom shop to get it fixed.

^^ Work trucks, only pulling trailers and each other out of the mud
