i put up with their auto messages announcing updates or asking me to vote for them in some stupid open web awards from mashable but this last one was over the top - asking us to support ad.ly and tweet for profit is straight up spam.what alternatives do you suggest? i need something that does facebook chat, gchat, and AIM at the very least.i don't want to start a flame war, but i just haven't kept up with how they've been updating after i found digsby a year or so ago.

seems like a worthwhile topic to me. i agree that Digsby is a bit over the top with forcing down updates and so forth. There's always Pidgin and Trillian. Pidgin wins for me because it's totally free, still has spellcheck, and does fewer annoying things.I dearly wish that there was a Windows port of Adium, with all of it's delicious customization features. I've yet to find a match for it on Windows.

anyone have pidgin or miranda for windows packaged with all the right plugins i'd want (and possibly any themes you like)?

the only plugins/addons i have with pidgin that i really use are the facebook chat plugin and the TWW smiley pack...i use the "clearlooks compact" theme because i prefer the interface to be simple and minimalisticif thunderbird had a comparable IM plugin/program, i'd make it my all-in-one communications utility
