So I was plugging my xbox power cord into the wall and accidentally bumped my xbox with my knee and it put a nice circular scratch all the way around the disk. Just one perfect circle on the outer edges of the underside. I was wondering if anyone has had any luck with getting a disk resurfaced anywhere like blockbuster or an electronics store. If not, what would happen if I rented the game and installed it on my xbox hard drive and then put my copy in. That might work since the disk doesnt spin when it is installed to the hard drive. It plays just by recognizing the game

There are a couple of things you can do. This happened with my BioShock disc, and that game is fucked. But, like any problem, there is a solution.1. You can buy the game again at Target. Keep your receipt, and have your bad disc with you. Replace the fresh disc in the case with the bad disc. Then drive to another Target, go to returns, and they give you a full refund. This works like a fucking charm.2. Install the game to your hard drive.3. Rent the game and swap the discs. Return the game immediately and deny everything.

I've had quite a few discs fixed at a video rental store (locally owned from back home). I had at least one with horrible gouge on it and they weren't even sure if the resurface machine would fix it or not, it did. I think they charged around $5. I don't have any experience with whereabouts to get it done, but you may just call around to places that have/sell used dvds/games like blockbuster, eb games, and maybe even try the nearby libraries (I would think they have some means of removing scratches from dvds if not a resurfacing machine).[Edited on November 25, 2009 at 8:53 AM. Why not just man up, admit you broke your disk, go to the store, and replace the video game that you fucked up.
11/25/2009 8:56:12 AM
Look buddy, if the 360 wasn't such a shoddily made console, the disc wouldn't have gotten fucked up. I've done similar shit with other discs in other systems, but they've never fucked up before. I'll be damned if I'm going to drop 60 bones again when the game wouldn't have gotten fucked up in the first place because of shitty hardware design. Luckily, however, there are ways around it.

ok, so I'm going to respond with updated advice for anyone who has experienced a similar problem....So I really have 3 non-douchebag options which do not include trying to scam a store out of a brand new copy,1) I can rent a copy and download it to my hard drive and then take the rental game back. My disk would hopefully play because when you have a game downloaded to the hard drive, the disk does not need to spin. The xbox just needs to recognize that you have that game in your system.2) I could try and find a store that does disk resurfacing around North Raleigh, or I can send it in to one of those websites online that do disk resurfacing for like 5 bucks and then they send the disk back to you.3) I emailed activision and asked them about disk replacement since I already paid $60. The $60 does not pay for the cost of them making the disk, obviously, but the cost of the "rights" to the game. They said I can mail it back to them with a $20 check or money order and they will send me a replacement game in about 3-6 weeks which kind of blows.I could buy a new one, but I don't feel like spending $130 (after tax) on this game. Thanks for the posts and anyone with any info on a store in Raleigh that does resurfacing would be much appreciated.

honestly, I think copying it to your hard drive is the most decent thing to do
11/25/2009 4:05:47 PM
11/25/2009 4:10:41 PM
^haha that makes me sound like a total noob.well my disk will start up and play for like 30 seconds, but then i get a disk read error as it is trying to join a Multiplayer game online. I think this is because the outer edges of the disk surface got scratched. I think it does spin upon startup for a couple seconds just long enough for the xbox to recognize the game. I think in my case dowloading it to the hard drive will probably work. I'm about to go rent it and give it a whirl.
11/25/2009 4:21:56 PM
*update*IT WORKS!!!downloading my friend's copy to the hard drive, giving him his copy back, putting my copy in and letting it play from hard drive = MONEY
11/25/2009 7:49:35 PM
I've fixed a 360 game disc with toothpaste. Use some that is slightly abrasive and if you rub it in a circular pattern over the scratch around the circumference of the disc, it should be just enough to get the disc to read again. From some random website:
11/26/2009 12:16:12 AM
^LOL wtf?!?
11/26/2009 2:20:12 AM
i've used brasso numerous times in my life to fix scratched CD's and DVD's. thin coat...buff it out...profit
11/26/2009 9:54:35 AM
11/26/2009 12:50:36 PM
^ Amen.I don't understand how anybody can argue that the 360 isn't a shoddily made console. I've been through the red ring, and I know more people who have had the red ring than haven't. That sort of shit doesn't happen by accident.I was just kidding about the Blockbuster thing. I really wouldn't recommend renting and then swapping out the disc. Installing to your hard drive is probably the ideal solution, but seriously, buying from Target and then selling to another Target fucking works. I'll be damned if I'm going to drop 120 for a game and eat that cost when the incident is the product of a poorly made system.Go ahead, hate all you want. I don't give a shit.
11/26/2009 4:50:46 PM
^as much as I would want to say its your fault for bumping the xbox360, I don't know of any other system that completely rapes a disc when you accidentally move it, so yea, shoddy as fuck.

while they may not scratch disks, early ps2's were also tremendous pieces of shit.
11/27/2009 3:59:14 PM
if you want to fix the disk, put some toothpaste over the scratch and brush radially. rinse it off and it should work
11/30/2009 3:29:57 PM
hey use toothpaste
11/30/2009 4:35:39 PM
I've heard toothpaste does the trick

What if you've got a problem with your toothpaste? I'm sure that thread's long gone by now, but it should be enshrined in the TWW hall of fame.
11/30/2009 5:50:07 PM
^^ Yeah, I'd do that except I only have about 2 gigs of free space left on my HDD. Anybody got something larger than 20 gigs for sale?
11/30/2009 6:38:58 PM
toothpaste does indeed work, kids.
11/30/2009 6:45:06 PM
I heard that ejaculate works as well. Just cum on the disc and buff it off. Do it quick though. You can't have too thick of a layer dry on. You'll never buff it all out in time.
11/30/2009 6:49:34 PM
long before they sold all these resurfacing machines and you kids got lazy, we always used peanut butter (similar to toothpaste) and i still use this method today
11/30/2009 7:42:32 PM
I too have used toothpaste on a scratched disk.
11/30/2009 7:51:13 PM
There are videos on youtube showing the toothpaste method. Most people who comment say it doesn't work because they probably have deep scratches in their disks. I think the toothpaste method only works for minor scratches. I'm not sure I would ever try it on a disk I actually cared about. Axelay, I would say just delete what you have on the hard drive to give you enough space for the game. I had to delete Gears of War 2 in order to install COD MW2. I haven't had any problems ever since I did this. Good luck.
11/30/2009 11:32:07 PM
I actually took mine to Play N Trade in Cary today and had them repolish the disc. Worked like a charm, and plays as good as new once again. I'll be interested to see if it stays that way. My 360 lays flats on its side, is very well vented, and doesn't get jostled while spinning.
12/1/2009 9:33:00 PM
^how much was it to get it repolished? my disc is scratch from the shitty 360. everything works so far (knock on wood) but i cant play the last fucking mission. it freezes as the last mission is loading. i might to that or just borrow one from my friends. but as long as the MP works i'll be ok for now
12/2/2009 1:13:59 AM
$4.00 per disc.
12/2/2009 11:10:07 AM
please guys I have a match tonight

This happened to my copy of MW2 as well. I just took it back to Wal-Mart, with the receipt, and they gave me a new one.
