it's a ryobi, pretty small (a bit bigger than one of those mantis tillers) and 2-strokefriend gave it to me because he couldn't get it to work and the guy he took it to said it has bad compression...for something so small and relatively cheap, should i just toss it? i'd rather get it up and running, if possible

I think you should sell it to me for a song and a dance. Is it really one of the string trimmer heads with the snap-on/off tiller head? If so, I got a power head that will work with it.The Ryobi power heads are cheap shit unless you have a pro grade one (I do). After having torn one down, I find it amazing that the damn thing doesn't fly apart. The connecting rod is multi-layer stamped steel.
