I think some ill-informed folks confuse UFC fights with Toughman contests (and even the early days of UFC). Today, there's obviously a big difference, but the two were more similar 15 years ago.

I can think of a few instances where booing is/was warranted, but the vast majority of the time, they just boo when someone isn't getting lit up. There weren't any booable moments that I saw in tonight's fights.
10/25/2009 1:34:03 AM
Yeah, especially not the part where Shogun clearly won every round yet still was robbed of the decision.

ok, i guess there are exceptionsever watch the early ufc stuff where dan severn would just lay on people for the entire match and not even try to punchthe shamrock/ severn fight was simply embarassing to watchbut come onpride used to blow my mind with how quiet the audience was. you could hear the fighters freaking breathe
10/27/2009 3:41:58 AM
That's just how Japanese crowds are. The same goes for New Japan, All Japan, and Noah.

bttt. Anderson Silva got booed for the better part of the entire 4th and 5th rounds tonight. With good reason. He may be an awesome fighter, but the disrespect he showed towards the fans and the sport that makes him was just insane. His showboating was borderline unacceptable, but at least could be classified as mildly entertaining, if you enjoy watching someone make a fool of himself. The last two rounds were just a joke.Dana White agrees:
4/11/2010 3:52:26 AM
The funny thing is Silva just fucked himself over and likely killed his shot at the GSP fight. Not to mention the fact that he's gone on record saying he won't fight Machida. Not sure how Dana will handle this because it's clear you don't want to make the guy a bigger star than he already is. He'll just continue doing this shit.
4/11/2010 8:22:50 AM
The only real solution is to have him fight at 205 until a real contender from 185 emerges... not just the latest can that happened to beat nate marquadt or some shit. Yeah, its pretty damn lame the way he has fought the last 3-4 fights at MW, but the guys he has fought have been terrible in comparison.
4/11/2010 10:46:40 AM
I'll watch UFC when they have scenes like this
4/11/2010 1:27:59 PM
He is to fast for 205. He just destroys everyone.
4/11/2010 1:46:45 PM
i don't know why dana is embarrassed. it's his job to find the best fighters in the world. honestly silva looked frustrated that he was fighting someone who was obviously not in his class. i understand that the showboating is a little disrespectful but it's obvious that maia didn't even think he deserved to be in the octagon with silva . i feel like silva took it easy on maia he looked pitiful going into the 5th round and silva still attacked more than maia.and in the post fight i saw silva DID apologize maybe the translator changed his words lol on a side note...the fact people booed him(that much) and that bj penn as well as other champs(evans vs machita comes to mind too) have lost chasing contenders makes me angry . "I have the belt i'm the champ come and take it from me, i've worked hard to get here as shown by my big ass belt now you prove to everyone that your are better than me without a doubt." the contenders should be the ones chasing not sayin the defending champs should run around and show boat, but there has to be something said about contenders being able to just stand in the ring and not get koed and somehow win bc they weren't "dominated" not to hijack but what do you guys think?[Edited on April 12, 2010 at 11:14 PM. Awww man GSP is a super badass. I'm not saying he would have beat Silva but GSP is easily among the Top 5 MMA fighters.
4/13/2010 2:05:46 PM
he is a bad ass thats for surebut the most borin badass of the bunch, that shit wouldnt work on silva

4/13/2010 4:49:30 PM
we've moved on to Ed Hardy

Why shouldn't people be allowed to boo? First of all, they paid money for the seats. That alone entitles them to have fun any way they want (within reason and whatever UFC rules for fans are). And what about the real fans of specific fighters. Seems fair to boo if a fighter you like is getting his ass handed to him. If you can't boo at UFC then you can't boo at NASCAR, Golf, Tennis, or any other individual sport.

it's not a real fight unless you glue broken shards of glass onto your fists.
4/13/2010 10:33:40 PM
i think the most awesome thing in the world would be to see silva taunting someone and then receive a career ending injury. if that doesn't happen then karma dictates that he will be shot/stabbed by a fat person.
4/14/2010 12:10:39 AM
Figure this is as good a thread as any. Anyone see Machida v shogun 2 tonight? That was such a chump move by daley. Those behind the ear knockouts always surprise me because they never look all that solid
5/9/2010 1:01:43 AM
I understand why Daley did it... But that doesn't make it right, and it should not be tolerated under any circumstances. I'm glad he's getting cut. As much aggression as is already present in the octagon, fighters need to know that there are going to be harsh consequences if they pull some bullshit like this.
5/9/2010 2:29:46 AM
guess the kimbo experiment is over
5/9/2010 4:33:30 PM
^^^^^and one of the fighters has to have a 4-foot long braided pony tail coming out the top of his head
5/9/2010 4:40:36 PM
why can't they boo? UFC gets progressively worse with each year. They eliminated long fighting periods in favor of numerous short rounds to minimize ground game fighters. They call the matches at the slightest sign of a person being vulnerable, and they fuck up decisions on rounds that go the distance like clockwork. The rankings seem staged, and the fights get hyped up like crazy for no apparent reason. To top it all off, UFC events draw in more money from ticket sales, PPV, and merchandise sales, yet their payout to the athletes isn't even a tenth of what it is in boxing.
5/9/2010 7:28:28 PM
Dana White has learned a lot from Vincent K. McMahon.
