This is my problem

I get all jazzed up for games in the few months leading up to realease...I read the developer blogs, cruise the forums, scan the rumor mills, etc. And I convince myself that this particular game is going to be the cat's meow. And release day comes around, and I run out and buy it immediately, and play it for an hour or two.

But then I don't play it the next day, or the day after. I might play it that weekend, and maybe for a few minutes the weekend after that. But all my excitement that I had built up is gone. I have no real desire to actually play the game. So I go back online and spot another hot game thats coming out a few months down the road, and start the process all over again.

I guess my problem is that I enjoy the hunt more than the kill...all the build up and anticipation is fun as hell to me, but once I sit down and start playing the game, it makes me wonder what all the fuss was about. And this isn't just for overly hyped games that turn out to be shit...this is for big time AAA games like GTA4, Fallout and Uncharted 2.

Sports games are the one exception; I always play the hell out of those. And games with good multiplayer like COD retain my attention as well. Its mainly games with a lengthy campaign that I start and never finish, and I'm not quite sure why.

Anyone else here with similar issues, feel free to opine

I think part of it is games being underwhelming when they come out. I was pretty excited about Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2, but after several days of playing and beating the game, it was just sort of, "Well, I guess that was alright."

i'm the opposite with sports games these days.

i remember playing the hell out of FIFA 04 and NFL2k5 to where my thumbs hurt.

and now, i bought madden 09 last year and played for like a week straight. started my franchise and went 4-0, played a handful of online games. then i didnt play for a day, then a week, and now a year with no relevant interest in picking it back up or this year's title.

I think for me, sports games are less interesting living on my own. I can still go to a friends house and play FIFA for 3 hours, but i know if i have it at home i'll play for a week or two and then just lose all interest.

I used to get overhyped for games, particularly my favorite series. It seemed like at one point I did more posting on message boards about games than actually playing them. And I usually caught quite a few spoilers that way too. I'd read previews from Gamespy, Gamespot, and IGN, even though they all (likely) played the same demo.

Now I hardly ever browse game sites, except for joystiq.com. I check for release dates and casually investigate the scores games receive without putting too much stock into reviewers' opinions.

When I pick up a game now, I'm much more 'green'. Much better this way and it doesn't waste nearly as much time.

It's probably because you keep looking for a game to steal your heart away from Magic: The Gathering, but you just can't break the cycle.

I'm really excited for Dragon Age: Origins, probably because I haven't seen a good fantasy RPG in a while. I'm ready to be excited for Diablo III whenever Blizzard kicks that project into a higher gear.

I think Tekken 6 and Mass Effect 2 are going to be good

but I don't JO to the thought of them every night like SF does

I never get particularly hyped over upcoming releases, with the exceptions of Modern Warfare 2 (which I am fully expecting to be the greatest FPS anyone has ever produced) and most things that Bioware makes.
