i kinda get the whole leaving a football game thing, but everyday at work? it's not like the whistle blows at 5pm and there's a mad rush out of here...

I do it so that my passenger side is next to the passenger side of the car beside me. This allows me to leave room for my driver side and the room for the driver side of the other car beside me. I figure most people are 1/car, thus don't really use the passenger side, so I can park closer to that side, leaving room for 2 people to get into/out of their vehicles. This wouldn't be a problem if people didn't make every parking spot the size of a damn golf cart

I often back into spots but I almost always do it if I am in a large, busy parking lot like or a parking deck. I do it because its easy, doesn't take but an extra 15 seconds and when you leave you can see more of whats going on whats going on behind you (i guess if you pull in then its in front of you but hopefully you know what i meant).

at some chemical plants i've worked in it's been required to back in

for if you gotta get the fuck out in a hurry

however, i back in at my house at home, but not at my normal job

i have a cockamamie (sp!) idea that since my parking lot is on a hill, and im pretty sure my intake valve is in the front of my car, if i park with the nose lower than the rear it uses less gas to start up

enough less that it's noticable in time between fillups and mileage per tank

it's all bullshit i know, but i do it anyways

more fuel efficient, you are doing more manuvering with your engine relatively warm rather than when it is cold. you idle longer.

of course the savings is probably a gallon over the course of a year...

i'm sorry, but when i spend 29k on a brand new car i'd like to at least take extra caution when parking so as to NOT ding the doors. it has nothing to do with where i'm from.

if i lived in yankeeville (aka THE CITY) i wouldn't have bought a brand new car, so i wouldn't care if it got dinged.

I don't do it, but on big vehicles it can be easier to get it in one attempt rather than having to pull in, back up, and pull in again. Being in reverse is like having rear wheel steering.

And sometimes you just don't see the park until you're almost past it. In that case you're probably not lined up to turn into it and it's easier just to turn the opposite direction, throw it in reverse, and back in.

that's pretty much it. Most of the time i pull through 2 spots normal (i'm not saying double park), that way i'm facing out when it's time to go. If i'm in deck with my truck i try to either find an angled space or i back in.

usually though, i dont mind walking a bit further to a)park in a "one banger", b)or leave myself some space in busy lots

I always back into my parking space at my apartment. I do this for two reasons:

1 - The parking area is very crowded and assholes sometimes park where there is no space making it difficult to get out of my space. Backing in just makes getting out easier.

2 - My parking space is next to a big garbage dumpster. One night when getting home late, I saw there was a raccoon hanging around the open dumpster door. Rather than pull in and get raccoon rabies raped as I stepped out next to the dumpster, I backed in so i could get out farther away. To this day I continue to do this.

I also never tell Reason #2 to anyone riding shotgun with me

Exactly. For some reason, it is easier to back a truck into a parking spot than to pull in head on.

Also, there is a fairly controlled environment when I'm backing up. The car one spot over isn't going to suddenly jump into my space. Being able to pull straight out of a spot gives me the visibility to not hit other cars, shopping carts, small children, etc.

Yep. My F150 longbed pretty much has no hope of pulling in forward in most of the lots I use. I can't remember the last time I pulled straight in.

I back in to parking spaces so that I can leave easier. Its easier to leave a dimly lit parking deck where people are flying down the lanes with no lights when you can see. Its also easier to leave a parking lot directly beside a busy road when you can just pull out.
