I live in Hendersonville and have been to all the orchards (they're pretty much one after the other down 64-E) but my favorite is Grandad's Apples. http://www.grandadsapples.com/

Their website kinda sucks but it's the most busy orchard with the most to do in Hendersonville. They've got rides for kids, a petting zoo, and a corn maze as well as apple picking and a little gift shop. On weekends,a bluegrass band comes and plays on the front porch and they sell barbeque. It's a cool little place. If you end up driving the 4 hours to Hendo, stop by and check it out.

Try looking in the VA mountains. Takes less time to drive to from Raleigh and I'm sure they grow apples up there too
