i'm thinking of trying out either Moblin or Eeebuntu since i'm not loving XP on my Eee 901

i found some weird ass way to get windows 7 on there too that seems like it might be more trouble than it's worth

anyone have any other suggestions that I should look into?

[Edited on October 14, 2009 at 8:47 AM. Reason : i heard moblin has finicky wireless drivers however]

Windows 7 has a release configured for netbooks, you know that?

I have XP Home on my 901. What don't you like about it?

15gb install. You're not going to be able to put Win7 on it unless you upgrade the drive.

My 901 has a 50mm 4GB SSD and a 70mm 16GB SSD.

I'm planning on ripping out the 50mm drive and swapping the 70mm drive (PATA) with a 64GB SATA II SSD (a LOT faster). Then I'm installing Windows 7 on that drive.

Something like this: http://www.mydigitaldiscount.com/ProductDetail.jsp?LISTID=80000B6E-1249058623

question is, will windows 7 run half-way decently on a celery 900 mhz proc? the specs i've seen for 7 suggest no.

I doubt it. I think it requires at least a 1ghz.

I'd wait for the new Ion powered ones to come out.

that's been my general feeling. i'm interested to see what the next generation of machines will bring before really doing anything. i'm ready to move up, and i've seen that i can do the vast majority of what i want on a netbook.

Well the more superpowered they get the more they're going to just be "laptops minus CDROMs." I mean.. for $500 you can buy a base model 15 inch laptop that does more than a netbook. The Ion-powered netbooks are going to be $500.

True, but I'm as much interested in the form factor as anything else. I don't really want to buy a $500 laptop, even if the nebook costs the same price.

Same, which is why I enjoy my 9 inch. I'm upset that they're trying to soupe them up so much, because all it's going to do is make them heavier, have longer battery life, and most importantly be more expensive.

If you want a "does it all" device, get an ultraportable laptop. Sure, you'll be spending $1500, but it will be awesome.

i kinda toyed around with the idea of one of those sub-$1k tablet notebooks that HP is selling. having used multi-touch now on a variety of devices (iphone/ipod, touchscreen whiteboards), i've seen where that would be an advantage. but i keep coming back to the "what do i really want this for" question, and realize that the netbook-sized device is still what i'm looking for.

The Thinkpad X200s is the same size as a 12" netbook, except it comes with a Core 2 Duo processor, 2GB RAM (upgradeable to 4GB), and a 250GB hard drive.

It's about $600 more expensive, but still.
