Verizon announces "game changing" partnershiphttp://www.pcworld.com/article/173184/google_and_verizon_team_up_for_android_phones.htmlSupposed to be a slew of devices launched before the holidays, and substantial support and investment after that.

I was wondering where the thread on this was, although there really should be a mention of Verizon/Motorola in the thread title.

The droid is one ugly and dull phone. Hopefully eclair makes up for it and it needs a touch pro 2-esque keyboard. Hopefully they change it since they mentioned that they're still open on the keyboard design. I'm waiting to see the new VZ HTC android that's coming. Don't think that one will end up with android 2.0 though[Edited on October 19, 2009 at 1:36 PM. Reason : ]

I like the commercials

Supposedly more commercials coming tonight during the ALCS. The storm 2 commercials shouldn't be too far off either.

i read a review about the droid that was really impressed with the hardware of the device, but i've yet to see a motorola that isn't underpowered and slow

^^ that made no sense^ supposedly the proc being used in the new crop of android devices is actually fairly powerful. i'm excited about these new devices. can't wait to dump this shitberry[Edited on October 19, 2009 at 2:25 PM. Reason : rawr]

It'll be interesting to see how android takes off. It's supposed to be 2nd in market share behind Symbian before the end of 2012.

^where did you get that quote? As of 2 days ago, the Palm Pre IS coming to Verizon...http://www.boygeniusreport.com/2009/10/17/verizon-tweet-palm-pre-early-next-year/Verizon has THE best coverage hands down. I hate the VCrapware, but honestly it's not a deal breaker. I'd rather be able to USE my phone, than to bicker about how I get my apps.and about the battery life, the nvidia tegra has shown you can run more with less power and maintain great battery life, so your points are moot about being able to do more you wouldn't "need" interchangeable batteries.... and better night shots, keyboard, and open development have nothing to do with battery life[Edited on October 19, 2009 at 3:39 PM. i've got spare batteries for my touch pro 2 as well - i'll gladly keep a spare battery on me to keep my screen at full brightness all day long

There's been rumors going back and forth about verizon and the pre for the past couple months. Who knows what's coming.

ha, well a CEO said a while back that that they'd be getting a pre and there were still bickering back and forth so it's a rumor until it's sitting on the shelves. And am I the only one not a fan of the pre?

Oh great, another thread for gloveco to take personal offense and get all butthurt towards anyone that suggests that another company besides Apple can make a decent product. This should be fun to watch. Personally, I don't know why anyone wouldn't want someone to come out with a phone that actually betters the iPhone. Competition should be good for everyone, right? Unfortunately, if you're going to go after the iPhone so hard, and talk about all the things your phone can do that the iPhone can't, then you have to, at the very least match it feature for feature everywhere else. I'd be amazed if anyone really could do that. Almost everything that this ad campaign mentions, with the exception of the keyboard (which I still think is +1 to the iPhone) and the battery could be fixed with software if it actually turns out that the Android phones make a big enough stir. Hell, most of those iDon'ts actually can be done on a jailbroken iPhone right now. Unfortunately, I see this as another Zune HD type situation. They have a couple of bullet points on why they're "better" than the iDevice, and fall short in many other places leaving you not with an actually iDevice killer, but simply an alternative for people who don't want an iDevice JUST because it's an Apple.

Considering how craptacular the first Storm is, I can see Verizon selling a lot of these droid phones, and to stop some of the hemorrhaging of users to ATT for the iPhone. Assuming the phone lives up to its hype. The Palm Pre is likely a better device, and it's still floundering. But, if Apple ever decided to make an iPhone for Verizon, it'll kill the Droid pretty quick, I think.
10/19/2009 5:21:56 PM
Guys, seriously, don't crap this up with more Apple vs. everyone else shit.

^ sure we can. it's just kinda not-fun when threads become a holy war. the whole "my device is better than your device" isn't enjoyable for anyone.
10/19/2009 6:04:01 PM
I doubt anyone here has worked on the iPhone or android phone to make the claim that its 'their' device. The whole point of a discussion is to compare one devices strengths vs. another.
10/19/2009 6:05:08 PM
^ fair enough. but when you say things like...

10/19/2009 7:40:56 PM
Well if you have an iPhone your internet speed anywhere other than the Raleigh-Durham area is going to be terrible. If you have an android device on Verizon Wireless it will have high speed data pretty much anywhere.

I call BS on that map cause there should be a few white spots west of wilmington
10/19/2009 7:49:14 PM
- I thought the commercial was for a video game or movie. Gotta like how they were too scared to show the product in the commercial.- The coverage commercial was way better.- Certainly has nothing special about the form factorWonder how it is to actually use the device to do stuff. That's the most important thing

The Droid might be the last straw for me.... I've sat by and waited patiently for over 2+ years, with a 3.5-year old phone, hoping against hope that the iPhone was coming to Verizon. With the latest shots aimed directed at iPhone, I can't imagine Apple is cozying up to them right now with an imminent release. I'm not going to switch to AT&T, so as long as I'm staying with Verizon, and as long as they don't have the iPhone, I might as well have a nice phone....
10/19/2009 11:36:06 PM
^^I imagine a lot of the reasoning behind that is the hardware the iPhone is sporting, the screen, etc...can't have everything i guess.
10/19/2009 11:58:25 PM
^It's got a mediocre screen, a mediocre processor and run of the mill components. The background apps problem is because of a processor not designed for it, running on a software platform that is a hackjob for mobile (relatively speaking. It's a great OS, just not very well optimized for running on a low power, battery operated device).
10/20/2009 2:00:41 AM
^you do realize we are talking cell phones here right?
10/20/2009 2:47:13 AM
What kind of reply is that? Of course I do. I also follow hardware, an the iPhone isn't packing anything special (neither are most android phones).
10/20/2009 11:39:03 AM
interesting, well thought out ad as wellwill be interested in demoing one in stores at somepointnot in the market for a all-in-one phone yet though
10/20/2009 12:02:26 PM
^^What hardware specs are you expecting? If cutting edge phones like the iPhone and these aren't impressive hardware then what is exactly?
10/20/2009 1:17:59 PM

Right now I'm planning on getting a BB Bold when I switch to Verizon, but I'll be sure to check this out (and the Storm 2) before I decide.

10/20/2009 2:22:38 PM
the iPhone is cutting edge as an ecosystem, the hardware is hardly cutting edge. It's got a pretty weak antenna, a piss poor camera ccd (3gs is improved, but nothing close to the quality in Sony and samsung phones), a very cheap accelerometer, a slow and old CPU architecture, a mediocre screen both in resolution and refresh, what else do you want to know?I don't want to derail the thread, if you want to know more about it feel free to pm me or start a new thread, because this is a huge tangent from your assertion that background processes aren't feasible simply because on platform can't do it.
10/20/2009 2:23:23 PM
^^ I own a Tour right now. If you do anything like web browsing or checking e-mail, I think you owe it to yourself to wait and see what Droid is like before you dive in with a BB. I came from an iPhone to this BB, and I absolutely hate the experience. <3 Verizon, but hate the device.
