Which band do you prefer and why? For those unfamiliar Wilco and Son Volt are two bands that were formed after the alt-country pioneering group Uncle Tupelo dissolved. Jeff Tweedy went on to form Wilco while Jay Farrar went on to form Son Volt.Me, i've always been more drawn to Son Volt mainly due to Jay Farrar's vocals. However, Wilco has some tracks that i really really like. And i still love jamming out to old UT albums. I declared today a Wilco day at work and i'm going through their discography (only, i'm starting at Summerteeth as I do not have A.M. or Being There). So which do you enjoy more? I figure this could be a good discussion as there are a good number of fans on here.

They're both great bandsSun Volt is more or less just an extension of Uncle Tupelo, something Wilco slowly grew out of over its first three albumsToo bad this thread is just gonna be a place to hate on the band that Wilco has become

yeah i hope it doesn't turn into that but alas, this is the wolf web.

Not really big into either band, but I like several Son Volt songs, whereas I don't really like any Wilco songs I've heard.

^^ I'm in that minority alsoSBS grew on me a lot over time, it's a good album with one or two dudsW(TA) has three or four really great songs and some sleepersNeither have as much bad music as people on the internet would like to make you believe

the only good complete album wilco has ever made is AMi love tracebut overall, i enjoy them both for different reasons if that makes sense.

Wilco sounds like a completely different band depending on what album you're listening to.so they got that going for them.
10/9/2009 10:04:39 AM
its very true. I've been listening to them all morning. Granted I don't have AM or Being There so i don't know how their early sounds compare.
10/9/2009 10:43:25 AM
<--- prefers Wilco.

Being There is easily the best record in either band's catalog, so I'll say Wilco.
10/9/2009 5:13:23 PM
i like the song "i am trying to break your heart".that's all i have to contribute to this thread.
10/9/2009 7:12:54 PM
Wilco easily for me... I probably couldn't pick a favorite out of the albums from Being There to Ghost. AM, SBS and W(TA) aren't bad either, 6-7 good songs each.

I like them both, but prefer Son Volt by a wide margin. I don't particularly care for a lot of Wilco's really out-there stuff.

Son Volt for me, pretty handily.I like Wilco, but it's almost gotten to the point where their library is so extensive that you can throw away half their songs, keep the other.[Edited on October 10, 2009 at 10:28 AM. Reason : asdfasda]

tough choice. I prefer Tweedy's music, but Farrar's lyrics... if they were only together it would be perfect... oh wait...A Ghost Is Born is one of my favorite albums ever so that would push Wilco ahead. Love Being There and SBS has a few tracks that are amazing.Seen Wilco live 4-5 times, generally a good show, one time with just Tweedy, yet to hit up a Son Volt concert.[Edited on October 11, 2009 at 1:01 AM. No love for Yankee Hotel Foxtrot? It's one of the best 10 albums of this decade.

That's debatable.Being There is much better.
10/11/2009 6:48:47 PM
YHF is their best album imo. Summerteeth is probably my second favoriteSon Volt is boring to me
10/11/2009 6:49:49 PM
YHF was alright, but some parts were just annoying, trying to be too damn weird.

(two separate thoughts)(that's why I removed my last post)

I didn't make up the decade criterion. I don't give a fuck about decades. Being There is the best Wilco and/ro Son Volt record, period.
10/12/2009 3:30:55 AM
old 97's (pre-fighting songs) and whiskeytown owns them both
10/12/2009 3:43:10 AM
^i thought about making a complete Alt-Country thread for all of these discussions but i wanted to keep it pinned down to Wilco/Son-Volt at the moment. But I enjoy the old 97's and love Whiskeytown.
10/12/2009 8:22:11 AM
Both good, but I wouldnt say any better. Although I do get a boner for the harmonies on Dont Want To Know Why
10/12/2009 11:42:36 AM
just got finished listening to Being There all the way through for the first time. Granted, im at work on desktop speakers but man this is a good album. Sounds completely different than what they've evolved to in recent years.
10/12/2009 11:51:16 AM
How the heck can you make this thread without ever having heard Being ThereYou jerk
10/12/2009 11:56:30 AM
^i prefaced that in my original post!
10/12/2009 12:01:58 PM
You did indeed, but you didn't give a good reason.Just sayin'.
